That doesn’t sound very great given that the means of transportation in Marsa Alam is already limited.

We’ve already established that attractions, as well as hotels, are scattered along a remote coastline rather than a walkable city center. That’s why choosing the right place to stay is crucial, especially if you’re a solo traveler like me. 

Here’s a complete breakdown of the regions in Marsa Alam where there are accommodation options. There are other zones like Wadi El Gemal, for instance, but since it’s a natural protected area, traditional hotels aren’t available; you can go camping there with a permit, though. 

That said, the following breakdown only covers regions where there are hotels, lodges, and resorts.

Where to Stay in Marsa Alam As a Solo Traveler

#1 Port Ghalib

What makes Port Ghalib special is that, unlike the rest of Marsa Alam, you’re not locked in your resort. There’s actually a promenade and a marina zone, where you can easily walk to restaurants, cafés, and shops. This is also where you may be hopping on a boat for some excursions, such as the Marsa Mubarak trip where you get to snorkel with turtles and dugongs.

• Nearby attractions: Port Ghalib Marina and Marsa Mubarak Bay.
• Transportation: In Marsa Alam, it’s best to either rent a car or join a group tour, and the operator will handle your pickup and drop-off.

#2 Abu Dabbab 

This area attracts nature lovers, as well as snorkelers and divers, for its unique ecosystem and vibrant reefs. That’s why it’s home to ecolodges designed with communal spaces and activity-focused facilities like dive centers and yoga decks, making it easier to socialize. Abu Dabbab definitely boasts lots of the best hotels in Marsa Alam.

• Arrange airport transfers if you’re arriving late at night.

• Save your accommodation details on Google Maps and write them down on a piece of paper in case something happens to your phone. 
• Prioritize comfort and convenience over price. 

Tips for Deciding Where to Stay in Marsa Alam

1. Decide what you want to do in advance

Depending on the attractions you want to visit and the activities you want to do, your ideal location might differ. For instance, if you’re a first-timer, you might want to explore different locations that are scattered around. On the other hand, if your priority is seclusion and adventure, you might want to stay elsewhere.

2. Opt for a central stay

To save time on the commute between attractions, opt to stay somewhere central. 

This is one of the reasons why I chose to stay in Abu Dabbab and why I personally recommend staying there, especially for first-timers who’d like to experience a bit of everything.

3. Consider the amenities included

Choose a hotel that offers beach access, an on-site diving center for activities, and multiple restaurants or bars. Basically, make sure the hotel offers a social atmosphere.

4. Look at meal options offered by hotels.

Look at options like bed & breakfast, half-board, and full-board, and choose wisely. Personally, I think opting for half-board accommodation is the ideal option. In my experience, you will most likely miss lunch at your hotel on most days; plus, full-day excursions often include lunch. So, by opting for half-board, you won’t be paying for the meal twice. 

Final Thoughts

Marsa Alam can be a pricey destination and a not-so-popular one amongst solo travelers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a great place to stay.
