11 Things to Do in Lebanon if It’s Your First Time

They say that there’s always this set of things that if you don’t do in a certain destination, you haven’t really been to it. Lebanon is surely one of the Middle East’s top touristic destinations with a lot to offer. So, if you’re a first-timer, I made things easier for you by compiling this list of things to do in Lebanon.

Top Things to Do in Lebanon

#1 Try Lebanese cuisine

The best way to get to know a culture is through its cuisine, and I assure you, the Lebanese one is bucket-list worthy. Middle Eastern cuisine is incredibly rich in flavors and Lebanese dishes are definitely a must-try. Forget about the touristy Shawarma and falafel places you’ve been to, you’ve got to try it all at the place of origin, right?

For more on what and where to eat, I’ve dedicated a mini-guide for that. So, make sure to read Your Guide to Food in Beirut: Where & What to Eat?

#2 Walk around Hamra

You’ve probably heard about Hamra, one of the most popular, commercial neighborhoods in Beirut. Filled with fun hang-out spots and fashion stores, this place never disappoints. However, you’ll end up going back there more than once because it’s also a gastronomical hub, featuring a wide array of restaurants and coffee shops. From Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts to Malak Al Tawouk and Sandwich w Nos, only to name a few.

Also, rest assured that the street art there will blow your mind. Wonderful murals cover the buildings of Hamra, and guess what… They have incredible stories behind them that you might be interested to read about here.

#3 Enjoy the sunset at Zaitunay Bay

Located by the Beirut Marina, the commercial promenade offers you both picturesque scenery and a variety of eateries. So, whether you’re famished or just looking for a hot spot to spend a lovely evening, Zaitunay Bay is your go-to.

#4 Snap a photo in front of the Pigeon Rocks in Raouche

Every city has this iconic monument or spot that travelers flock to for a traditional photo. And one of the main things to do in Lebanon is to stop by Beirut’s famed Pigeon Rocks. So how about you head to Raouche and snap a selfie with the iconic, picturesque rock formations in the middle of the Mediterranean?

#5 Head to the mountains

If Lebanon would be distinguished by anything, it would definitely be the mountains. The Middle Eastern country is best known for its mountainous nature full of marvelous cedar trees. So, go hiking in the cedar forest, go camping in Bcharre, or simply go for a ride in Mont Liban.

Pro Tip: Don’t drive yourself – the locals know best when it comes to driving in the mountains. The roads are pretty tricky, so it’s better to hire a driver if you don’t have a Lebanese friend.

#6 Go see the Lady of Lebanon

The famed Marian shrine is a must-visit when in Lebanon. Taking the téléfrique up the mountain, lighting a candle, and taking in the mesmerizing view from up there is an experience you can’t miss. Don’t miss my guide on the day trip to Harissa.

#7 Visit Baalbeck

The 9,000-year-old ancient Phoenician city lies in El Bekaa Valley, 90 kilometers away from Beirut. Baalbeck is considered a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is no surprise as it’s simply an archaeological masterpiece. History buff or not, you definitely won’t regret your visit.

#8 Pose in front of the ‘I heart Beirut’ sign

Another traditional photo! Many cities are privileged with such signs and Beirut is one of them. Head to Downtown Beirut and you’ll find the famed sign at the entrance of Beirut Souks.

#9 Buy a book from Antoine (or the entire bookstore)

If you’re a bookworm, I’d like to warn you: it’s not easy to get out of Antoine without breaking the bank. This bookstore is insanely addictive – there’s something there for everyone, and it’s so hard not to buy a book (or all of them). Just be careful as it’s a bit pricey!

Pro Tip: There are 6 branches around Beirut. but most of them close as early as 8 pm or even 6:30 pm. The one that closes at the latest (10 pm) is the branch in Beirut Souks. Meanwhile, the two branches with the most convenient locations are the ones in Beirut Souks and Hamra Street.

#10 Go bar hopping in Mar Mikhael

Mar Mikhael is Beirut’s neighborhood that literally never sleeps. From hanging out at cafés and art galleries during the day to pre-drinking at night, it’s any night owl’s go-to. The street is lined with Beirut’s hottest bars and pubs on both sides. Bodo and Busker both have wonderful vibes; however, my ultimate favorite was Radio Beirut, where there’s normally live music. And if you know me, you know I’m a sucker for live music!

#11 Then party hard

Nightlife in Beirut is crazy – Mar Mikhael is only the warm-up that comes before the actual wild night out! The Garten, AHM, and B018 are some of the super popular clubs that you should add to your list.

FUN FACT: Did you know B018 was a bomb shelter than turned into a party spot? Uniting the Lebanese underground when they were in disagreement on the surface of the ground was the whole idea behind the venue. It simply shows how music can be the cure even in times of war.
