5 Advantages of Travelling Alone That Changed My Quarantine

Whether you’re now stuck in a country where there was a total lockdown or if you’re self-isolating, these rough times have been hard on everyone, travelers included. I’ve learned a lot from solo travelling in the past four years, but the following five advantages of travelling alone are the ones that are helping me get through this quarantine.

5 Advantages of Travelling Alone That Can Change Your Lockdown

#1 It helped me get out of my comfort zone

One of the main advantages of travelling, in general, and especially solo travelling is that it helps you get out of your comfort zone and do things that you’re not used to doing. Believe it or not, but this situation is exactly the same; it’s just that you don’t know it yet. Same but different.

You may be used to staying at home sometimes for days but only if you want to and not because you have to; think of that as your comfort zone. That’s what you’re familiar with, right? But now that you’re forced to stay home and have no other choice, it bugs you. You know why? Because you’re simply not used to it.

If you look at this challenge as if it’s a comfort zone you’re getting out of and try to adapt instead, it should get easier. But how can you adapt? For starters, don’t look at it as if you’re imprisoned, but rather look at the bright side. Count your blessings, focus on being productive (or not), you can focus your energy on self-care and rest if you feel like you need that instead (I know burnout sucks), reconnect with yourself, and appreciate the extra time you now have and once took for granted.

You can also look at the situation differently. Assume this is like going back to your comfort zone after you got out of it; just like coming back home and dealing with the itching travel bug after an unforgettable trip. Ask yourself how do you get over your travel bug and do the same. I personally work on traveling again, but since we can’t now, I can at least plan my next dream trip!

#2 It taught me that you don’t need others to have fun

Before I started solo travelling, I was very picky when it comes to my company on trips (still am haha). But constantly being in this situation, forcing myself to get out of my comfort zone has taught me how to enjoy my own self’s company. Thanks to my travels, I now appreciate my “me time“, which is one of the best advantages of travelling along. I don’t always spend my travels alone though; I make friends and meet people along the way, but sometimes, you’re not that lucky, so you have to learn it the hard way.

#3 Solo travelling taught me that panic is the greatest enemy

I almost got mugged, almost lost my luggage, almost missed my flight, almost ran out of cash, but it all passed. These were all situations that would make anyone panic, but travelling on my own has taught me that panicking is not the answer and it won’t solve anything. In fact, it’ll only make things worse.

If you give yourself a chance to calm down, you’ll be able to think clearly so you can solve whatever problem you might be facing. So, panic buying is not a responsible act. Also, freaking out in a corner all day long, following unreliable sources of information, and the paranoia that brings you will kill you soon, not the Coronavirus. If you can take one thing from the advantages of travelling alone, take this one.

#4 Going solo unleashes your inner social butterfly

I never had any trouble socializing, to be honest. I’ve always been an extrovert; however, solo travelling helps one mingle if this was ever a hard task for them. So, both social butterflies and a newbie extroverts alike are lucky they now have friends all over the world. Thanks to this quarantine, my friends and I are privileged with more time, that we can catch up and stay connected more often.

#5 Solo travelling has made me more socially responsible

When you travel alone, unlike with a group of friends, you get exposed to more mindsets as you socialize and get in contact with more people. During my solo travels, I’m proud to say that I have learned from others, especially when it comes to sustainable travel. This has made me feel more socially responsible to stay at home, for the travel industry to flourish once again, for the earth to heal, and so that everyone can stay safe. As much as it pains me but this made me less selfish. The end result will feel rewarding eventually; I know that for sure. I’m pretty sure this is all worth the wait.

  1. Good on you for traveling solo! As you said, it’s a great way to get out of your comfort zone, a great way
to improve your map-reading skills, and a great way to improve your problem solving skills. Solo travel
also allows you to do whatever you want without worrying about what another person might think. I love
traveling alone. It gives me plenty of time to think and reflect.

  2. Great read! Solo travel really teaches you a lot about yourself, namely that you can make it through any
    tough situation.

  3. I have always been scared to travel alone since I am not a social butterfly and get lost easily haha After
reading your post I realized that if I am in a new city and get lost, I will be forced to be more social and
make new friends along the way! I feel when you are in a situation where you can’t rely on someone else,
meaning not being with someone you know, then you will trust yourself more and therefore grow as a
    person.

    1. Wow! I’m super happy my post made you feel like that! I really hope this would encourage you to try traveling alone when it’s safe to travel again, of course. I have another post on how solo traveling can be life-changing (you could find it in the relevant reads), make sure to read that 🙂

  4. Solo travel is the absolute best! It really helps you grow in so so many ways. I agree that it made me a
stronger person overall, too! It’s scary at first, but the best decision ever.

  5. Oh, I loved this so much! I’m becoming more and more intrigued by deeper, more mindful travel and
looking at how it transforms us. And this post helped me see how my solo travels did the same for me.
Quarantine would have been much different without them!

  6. I’ve been solo traveling a long time and
I think it made the transition to
    quarantine easier because I’d already
gotten used to enjoying my own
    company!
