On every traveler’s checklist, visiting Germany is a must, especially Berlin, its iconic capital. I personally took advantage of my Erasmus time in France and pay Berlin a visit. The city’s best known for its art scene, nightlife, and its history that dates back to the Soviet occupation. Having so much to offer, you can’t say no to having the full Berlin experience. How? There’s only one answer to that, the Berlin bucket list!
Ready to check things off your Berlin bucket list?
The Berlin bucket list basically consists of 10 things you should mark as done when you pay Berlin a visit.
Pass by the Berlin Wall
You haven’t visited Berlin if you haven’t walked along the famed Berlin Wall. This was the concrete barrier, built by the communist government of East Germany, that separated West and East Berlin. It stood from 1961 up until the fall of the wall in 1989.
Visit the East Side Gallery
The East Side Gallery is an open-air museum of art on a remaining part of the Berlin Wall. The 1,316 m long remnant of the wall exhibits incredible murals by various artists.
Eat Schnitzel like a true German
Whichever country you go to, you must try their cuisine, and this German specialty is a must-try in its place of origin. Pan-fried meat covered in flour, eggs, and breadcrumbs? Sounds basic, but yummy!
Try out Currywurst
Another specialty of the Germans is this fast food dish. I honestly haven’t tried it myself because I don’t eat pork, but if you do, I heard it’s worth the try. Currywurst is fried pork sausage that’s cut into bite-sized chunks, topped with ketchup seasoned with curry.
Admire the landscapes
The amount of greenery in Berlin is incredible. Simply going for a walk around the city’s spectacular streets and parks is a must. If you’re into photography, then this would be the cherry on top for sure.
Party all night
The nightlife scene in Berlin, in particular, is crazy! The city never sleeps and parties never end. Berlin’s most popular clubs include Tresor and Watergate.
Go to a shopping mall and treat yourself
Believe it or not, but Germany, in general, is a shopping haven, and Berlin is full of malls that’ll make you shop till you drop. Those malls include Mall of Berlin and ALEXA.
Explore Alexanderplatz
The large public square is where many travelers start their Berlin tour for several reasons. For starters, it’s a transport, as well as a commercial hub, having several shopping malls and retail stores. Alexanderplatz is also home to multiple of the capital’s sites including the Fernsehturm (TV tower) and the famous World Clock.
Visit the Holocaust Memorial
This stop is on every Berlin first-timer’s must-visit list. The memorial site was built to commemorate the lives jews lost in the holocaust. You’ve probably stumbled upon many pictures of tourists roaming around a maze-like structure, well, this is it.
Pass by Brandenburg Gate
This is by far, the city’s most prominent landmark. The gate that was once considered a symbol of division back in the days of the Cold War, is now viewed as a symbol of unity.
