About Luxor

Luxor, located in southern Egypt, which is known as Upper Egypt, is one of the most prominent destinations to visit, and you must add it to your itinerary. Like I previously mentioned, Luxor is considered the world’s greatest open-air museum as it boasts one-third of the world’s ancient monuments. But that’s not the only reason why it’s a must-visit.

Modern Luxor, which was once known as Thebes, used to be the capital of Ancient Egypt from the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055–1650 BC) onwards. Most of its significant monuments, though, were built during the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1069 BC), showcasing the destination’s great historical, religious, and political significance.

The Nile River divides Luxor into two sides: the East and West banks. The East Bank was a hub for worship and administration, as it’s home to two of the most important temples in Egypt, Karnak and Luxor temples. On the other hand, the West Bank was dedicated to the dead. In Ancient Egyptian culture, the sun setting in the west symbolizes the journey to the afterlife and rebirth. This is why Ancient Egyptians chose this area to build necropolises, mortuary temples, and tombs. Those include iconic archaeological sites like the Valleys of the Kings and Queens, and the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut.

Given its rich heritage and extraordinary history, Luxor and its necropolises were named  UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979.

Where to Stay in Luxor, Egypt?

If you’re not visiting with a Nile Cruise, there are plenty of places to stay in Luxor if you’re flying in or going by train. Generally, I would recommend staying somewhere in the East Bank, especially if it’s your first time there, to be closer to the city center and the major attractions. The West Bank, on the other hand, boasts a variety of scenic stays, but they’re usually more secluded.

Best Time to Visit Luxor

Since Luxor is located in Upper Egypt, which is in the South, the weather is hot year-round. That’s why it’s best to visit Luxor during the cooler months, from October to April. The best weather is in the winter months, from December to February, but this is also the peak season. Not just because of the great weather conditions, but also because Christmas break is foreigners’ high season, and locals’ high season is during the mid-term vacation, which takes place from mid-January to mid-February. 

If you’d like to travel during the shoulder season, then aim to travel during the fall (October/November) or spring (March/April). Either way, avoid traveling to Luxor in the summer at all costs as it’s extremely hot during that time of year. 

Getting Around in Luxor

#1 Taxi

The easiest way to get around is by hailing a taxi. Luxor is a small city, in comparison to Cairo, so taxis are quite affordable. One thing I did was when I felt comfortable with a driver, I took his number and called him in advance whenever I needed a ride. Having a couple of backup contacts would be smart, too.

#2 Walking

As I said, Luxor is a small city, so walking, at least on the East Bank around the center, is pretty doable. It’s also a great way of exploring the city.

#3 Carriage

This is one of the most popular things to do in Luxor. However, as I’m an avid animal lover, I try to only support such activities if they’re in no way endangering the animals or causing them any harm. As horses are considered service animals, I’d only choose to ride if their handlers are taking good care of them.

#4 Felucca

A trip to Egypt wouldn’t be complete without a felucca ride. And since Luxor’s East and West banks are separated by the Nile River, you will most likely take at least one ride to cross over to the other side. There are bridges, and you can cross over in a taxi, but the felucca ride is absolutely worth it.

Luxor Solo Travel Safety

When I went to Luxor as an adult, I didn’t travel solo as I usually do, to be honest. Not because it’s not safe, but because I was traveling on my birthday with one of my close friends. However, we both felt absolutely safe the entire time as two girls traveling alone, and I would definitely travel there solo if I ever get the chance. 

That said, if you’re solo traveling, there’s nothing to worry about as long as you’re vigilant and follow my tips. Here are some things to do in Luxor to travel safely:

• Be assertive: Luxor is one of the most touristy destinations in the world, so expect a lot of people trying to sell you something. Be it a ride, a tour, a souvenir, or even a photo. Persistent vendors are literally everywhere, and it can be very overwhelming. Just try to be patient, and if you simply don’t want the service or if you don’t want to stop for every single person, don’t be afraid to be firm. You can definitely do this without being rude. Two phrases that’ll come in handy are “Khalas”, which means “enough”, or “Laa Shokran”, which means “no, thank you”.
• Book your accommodation somewhere central if you’re traveling alone: as I mentioned earlier, the West Bank is a bit secluded, as everything is more spread out. So, if you’re a first-time solo traveler, it’s best if you stay in a well-reviewed area/hotel on the East Bank. The areas near the Karnak or Luxor temples, or the Corniche, are great options. However, if you opt for a laidback stay on the West Bank, make sure you book a reputable hotel or guest house that can arrange transfers for you.
• Avoid walking alone late at night: as I said, Luxor is generally safe, but it gets super quiet after 10 PM, especially if you’re staying on the West Bank. So, it’s best if you stick to well-lit areas or book a ride. 
• Only use licensed guides and official transportation: For tours, you can either book through your hotel or a reputable agency. For the latter, I usually look up trusted experiences on Get Your Guide and Viator. 
• Always agree on the price beforehand: Be it a taxi ride or a tour, always agree on the price first.
• Stay hydrated and don’t forget travel insurance: Luxor can get ridiculously hot even in the winter, when the weather is actually milder and safer to visit. So, dehydration and heat strokes are quite common. That said, carrying a reusable water bottle with you, applying sunscreen, and wearing a sun hat and/or sunglasses are some of the most important things to do in Luxor to stay safe. • Contact the tourism police when needed: You don’t need the police only when it comes to emergencies. In Egypt, the tourist police can be quite helpful with scams, price disputes, or harassment. Their hotline is 126.

Things to Do in Luxor: Top Attractions You Can’t Miss

#1 Karnak Temple 

Visiting the Karnak Temple is one of my top things to do in Luxor, as it’s one of my favorite temples and archaeological sites in all of Egypt. It was even dubbed Ipet‑Sut, which means “the most esteemed of places” by the Ancient Egyptians themselves.

Located on the East Bank of Luxor, it boasts many temples and chapels, including the Great Temple of Amun. That’s why the temple’s priesthood held great importance and political power at the time. In addition to the Amun Precinct, there are also the Precinct of his wife, Mut, to the South, and the Precinct of Montu to the North, and to the East, Akhenaten’s Temple to Aten.

Karnak is known for the world-famous Avenue of Sphinxes, linking it to Luxor Temple, and the iconic Great Hypostyle Hall. But what some people may not know is that Karnak’s Great Temple of Amun is built to be oriented towards Luxor Temple as well. Like most Ancient Egyptian temples, it was built on an East-West axis. This was because these ancient models were meant to represent the cosmos, and their layouts meant that they mirrored the sun god Ra’s trajectory through the sky. However, the Temple of Amun also has a North-South axis, orienting it towards Luxor Temple. 

Fun Fact:

One of my personal favorite highlights in Karnak is the giant Kheper Scarab statue by the Sacred Lake. In Ancient Egypt, scarabs (dung beetles) symbolized growth, rebirth, and transformation. People wore scarab amulets for good luck and protection; I personally wear a scarab pendant that I never take off!

Anyhow, the legend surrounding the iconic scarab statue in Karnak says that encircling it would bring good luck. Some claim you should do 3 laps, and others say 7. Some people also say 3 is for luck and 7 is for a baby! Others claim that 3 laps are for good luck, 7 for marriage, and 9 to get pregnant. How the ritual started isn’t clear, but people still do it for fun to this day anyway, and it’s super popular amongst tourists!

#2 Luxor Temple

Unlike most Ancient Egyptian temples that were built on an East-West axis, Luxor Temple was oriented towards Karnak Temple, which is 3 kilometers away. This is because Luxor Temple played an integral role in one of Ancient Egypt’s significant celebrations, the Opet Festival. During this annual grand ceremony, the sacred statues of the god Amun, his wife Mut, and their son Khonsu were carried from their temples in Karnak to Luxor Temple along the Avenue of Sphinxes. This journey was carried out so that the triad could visit Amenemopet, the deity worshipped at Luxor Temple. 

Luxor Temple was built and expanded over several centuries by multiple rulers, with its earliest structure dating back to Queen Hatshepsut’s era. On the other hand, the main body of the temple, as well as the Great Colonnade, was constructed during the reign of Amenhotep III. Ramesses II also made multiple significant additions, including the massive entrance pylon, colossal statues, and two obelisks, one of which now stands at the Place de la Concorde in Paris.

During the Roman Empire’s rule, they transformed parts of the temple into a military fort, covering original walls with plaster and painting over them in Graeco-Roman style. The reliefs, depicting Emperor Diocletian and his 3 co-regents, had largely disappeared but can still be seen.

#3 Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut 

As I previously mentioned, the West Bank of Luxor was dedicated to the dead. That’s why Queen Hatshepsut (c.1473–1458 BC) built a magnificent funerary temple at el Deir el-Bahari, on the West Bank of Luxor. 

The complex wasn’t devoted solely to her; the temple also includes sections for the cults of her father, Thutmose I, the goddess Hathor, and the funerary god Anubis. An altar, open to the sky and the sun, was also dedicated to the cult of Ra, and the Sanctum Sanctorum was given to Amun.

#4 Valley of the Kings

The West Bank’s funerary association is the reason why the Valley of the Kings, a royal burial site, was located on the Western side. Powerful kings of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties of the New Kingdom (c.1550-1069) were buried there. However, unlike what the site’s name suggests, the valley wasn’t just limited to rulers. Some members of the royal family, aside from the kings, were buried there as well, as were a few non-royal, though very high-ranking officials.

There are over 60 tombs at the archaeological site; however, the ticket grants you access to 3 tombs of your choice. There are also extra special tombs that you need to pay extra for. From the tombs that were open at the time of my visit, I chose the tombs of Ramesses III, Ramesses IV, and Merenptah to see. I also paid extra tickets for the tombs of Ramesses V & VI, Tutankhamun, and Seti I. Visiting these tombs is one of the things to do in Luxor that I highly recommend, as I’ve seen some of the most mindblowing artwork I’ve ever laid my eyes on!

#5 Valley of the Queens

Also located on the Western side, this burial site, as the name suggests, is dedicated to the queens, but also to princesses and royal children. Some of the significant tombs there are those of Queen Titi, Prince Amunherkhepshef, and Prince Khaemwaset. However, the most significant of all is the tomb of Queen Nefertari, dubbed the Jewel of the Valley. It’s also often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of Ancient Egypt due to the marvelous, vivid frescoes. That’s why a very limited number of visitors are allowed inside each day, and for an extra ticket.

#6  Colossi of Memnon

The 2 gigantic faceless statues, about 18 meters tall, originally represent King Amenhotep III, one of the 18th dynasty’s greatest kings. Famous for their grandeur, they’re each cut from a single block of stone, weighing 1,000 tons, sitting at the entrance of the king’s very own funerary temple, still being excavated. 

PRO TIP: Given that it’s probably the first thing tourists flock to as their buses arrive on the West Bank, the best time for a quick stop is right after sunrise. This way, you don’t just guarantee crowd-free photos, but also colorful hot air balloons in the background.

Other Things to Do in Luxor: More Attractions to Visit if You Have the Time

If you’re done with all the essential things to do in Luxor, and you have some extra time on your hands, here are some underrated attractions that are worth a visit:

#1 The Ramesseum (Temple of Ramesses II) 

The Ramesseum is the funerary temple of Ramesses II, one of Ancient Egypt’s most powerful and famous kings. The temple, built in the 13th century BC from sandstone, later became a model for other funerary temples. 

Much of the complex is now in ruins; however, it once boasted massive pylons, courtyards filled with columns, and more impressive architectural details. One of the most notable details is how the reliefs on the walls of the temple depicted Ramesses II’s military victories, including the famed Battle of Kadesh, as well as other religious and funerary scenes. The Ramesseum is a strong testament to Ramesses II’s legacy and the grandeur of Ancient Egypt’s architecture.

#2 Medinet Habu (Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III)

The Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III, also known as Medinet Habu, is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. Inspired by the neighboring Ramesseum, the temple doubled as both the place for Ramesses III’s funerary ritual and for worshipping the god Amun. 

Surrounded by huge mud-brick defensive walls, the temple’s layout reflects the politically unstable era during which it was built. Visitors can explore grand pylons, columned halls, chapels, courtyards, and much more inside the complex. The meticulous reliefs depict Ramesses III’s military victories, making the site not just an architectural masterpiece, but also a significant historical record of one of Ancient Egypt’s famed kings’ accomplishments.

#3 Luxor Museum 

If you have extra time and you’re a museum fan, then the Luxor Museum is absolutely worth adding to your list of things to do in Luxor. This small, yet mighty, museum offers a wonderful overview of ancient Thebes, known today as Luxor.

#4 Mummification Museum 

Even though it’s a small museum but visiting it is one of the coolest things to do in Luxor, as it offers impressive insights into the mystery of mummification in Ancient Egypt. There, you can see actual mummies of both humans and animals, as well as the tools used in the process.

Things to Do in Luxor: Unique Experiences

#1 Hot air ballooning at sunrise

I know this sounds like an extra addition to your itinerary and budget, especially because it’s usually optional, but trust me, hot air ballooning is one of the most unforgettable things to do in Luxor. In fact, the whole reason why I went to Luxor the last time was that I wanted to cross this mindblowing experience off my bucket list on my birthday.

#2 Felucca ride on the Nile

Restaurants in Luxor: Where to Eat?

Unfortunately, as an Egyptian, I didn’t find Luxor one of the best destinations to try authentic Egyptian cuisine. However, there was this one restaurant on the East Bank that I kept going back to every single day of my last trip to Luxor. They don’t just serve delicious, authentic Egyptian food, but the atmosphere and vibes there were spot on! So, if you’re looking for a restaurant that serves food that feels like a warm hug from an Egyptian grandma, Sofra is the place to go!

Day Trips From Luxor

Dendera

One of the best things to do in Luxor, if you have extra time on your hands, is to go on day trips to visit nearby temples and archaeological sites. One of the most beautiful places you could visit is the Temple of Dendera. 

Located in Qena, the Temple of Dendera was dedicated to the goddess Hathor, one of Ancient Egypt’s most celebrated deities. She was often associated with music, joy, dance, and motherhood; she was also dubbed the Lady of the Sky. Her temple, with its iconic entrance of six columns with Hathor’s head, is definitely one of the wonderful and best-preserved temples in Egypt, making it worth a visit.

Esna 

This city of Esna was one of the most significant cities in Ancient Egypt, especially during the Roman and Ptolemaic periods. The Temple of Esna was dedicated to the worship of the ram-headed god, Khnum, the god of creation. The inscriptions in this temple and the beautifully lotus-decorated pillars are so vivid, which makes this temple so special.

Edfu

The Temple of Edfu was dedicated to the famed god Horus and was partially built during the reign of Ptolemy III (246–221 BC) in 237 BC. The construction was then resumed 180 years later in the reign of Ptolemy XII (80–51 BC) in 57 BC.

It’s one of the most impressive and preserved temples in the country. Mostly because it remained buried under layers of debris for millennia, enabling its architectural and decorative elements to survive.

Aswan

In my opinion, Aswan deserves a multi-day trip, usually paired with Luxor due to their close proximity. I personally love kicking off this trip in Luxor, where it requires so much energy, and ending it unwinding in beautiful Aswan, where the nature and hospitality win. However, history buffs who are planning a short trip in Egypt may be more inclined to spend more time in Luxor for the archaeological sites. In this case, if you settle for a day trip, it’s completely fine. You might want to spend the day exploring Nubian villages like Gharb Seheil or Heissa, visit the mesmerizing Philae Temple, or go all the way to the famed Abu Simbel.

Hurghada

Egypt is a massive country, and it’s bigger than what most people think. That’s why planning your itinerary in a way that makes sense geographically is important. So, visiting Hurghada after Luxor, or vice versa, is a good idea if you’re planning to go to Hurghada as well. If not, and you only have one day, then a day trip from Luxor to Hurghada might be a wise choice if you want to take a break from the scorching heat and go snorkeling in the Red Sea instead.

About Abu Simbel

The Abu Simbel Temples are located in Nubia, in Aswan governorate, near Egypt’s southern border. King Ramses II of the 19th Dynasty cut into the existing rock formations to build the world-famed temples. The main temple is known for its iconic facade where the 4 colossal seated statues are located; 2 on each side of the entrance. Below their feet, there are small figures representing the king’s family. You can also see fragments of one of the colossal statues on the ground as a result of an ancient earthquake.

On the inside, there are 3 interconnected halls and detailed hieroglyphic inscriptions on the walls, including battle scenes from Ramses’ victory at the Battle of Kadesh. There are more colossal statues of Ramses posing as Osiris, lined up and leading to the innermost sanctuary, where the 4 deities are sitting: Amun Ra, Ra Horakhty, Ptah, and a deified version of Ramses II.

A smaller temple, also rock-cut, sits to the north of it. However, this one is dedicated to Ramses II’s wife, Queen Nefertari, and Hathor, the goddess of the sky, women, fertility, and love. On the facade are 6 colossal statues of the king and queen. 

Abu Simbel’s Relocation

The construction of the High Dam posed a threat to submerge the Abu Simbel Temples. So, in 1968, the temples were carefully dismantled and relocated to a higher ground just like the Philae Temple. And almost a decade later, in the late 70s, Abu Simbel was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How to Book the Abu Simbel Tour

There are tons of tour operators and travel agencies in Aswan that will offer to take you to Abu Simbel, but how to know which ones are the best? In a touristy country like Egypt, the abundance of options can be overwhelming. What I personally recommend, and what I’ve done myself, is reading reviews online. Look at what other explorers, especially solo travelers if you’re venturing alone, are saying online about tour operators. Aside from platforms like TripAdvisor and Yelp, travelers will be reviewing specific experiences on booking platforms like Get Your Guide, Viator, and Klook–these are some of my favorites.

What the Abu Simbel Tour Typically Consists Of

A day trip from Aswan to Abu Simbel will require an entire morning as the drive to the archaeological site will take approximately 3-4 hours–so there are 6 hours wasted just on the road. That said, expect a very early hotel pickup. I guarantee you it’s absolutely worth it, though!

• Early morning pick-up: Aside from the long drive, it’s best to go as early as possible to beat the crowds. Expect to be picked up as early as 3 to 4 AM, which depends on the driver’s route, if it’s not a private tour and you’re sharing it with others. For instance, I was picked up around 4 AM; however, I was the last person to be picked up from a small group of 5 as I was staying in the Nubian village.

P.S. If you’re not staying in Aswan, the city, and you’re staying elsewhere, expect an extra cost for an extra means of transportation like a speedboat or a motor tricycle. For example, the mini-bus couldn’t pick me up from the Nubian village of Gharb Seheil as it would’ve wasted the entire group a lot of time and the road wasn’t really mini-bus-friendly. So, a motor tricycle picked me up and dropped me off at another pick-up point so I could join my group.

• 3-hour ride to Abu Simbel: If you can sleep in a moving vehicle, that’s great, because this is your only chance to recharge for your Abu Simbel tour. Expect to be woken up by a stunning sunrise–take it in and snack on your packed breakfast as you’ll have a long day ahead of you.
• Meeting your guide: Your driver will drop you off at the parking lot right outside the Abu Simbel Temples, and there, you’ll meet your tour guide. On your way inside, you’ll make a stop at the ticket office to purchase your ticket(s) as they’re often not included in the Abu Simbel tour itself.
• Quick history lesson: Upon your arrival in front of the Abu Simbel Temples, your tour guide will tell you all about the temples’ history and what you’ll see inside. This is to save time spent inside each temple so you wouldn’t overcrowd the site.

• Exploring the temples: Afterwards, your guide will give you some free time to explore at your own pace. Generally, the main temple will require 30 minutes and the small temple will take around 15 minutes (photography time included). 
• Back to Aswan: Depending on the agreed time for regrouping you might have some time for souvenir shopping on your way out–you can also buy snacks or use the restroom if you need to. Then, you’ll head back to Aswan and will probably arrive sometime between 1 and 2:30 PM, depending on your tour’s itinerary and route.

The Best Times to Visit Abu Simbel 

Winter months are the best time to go on the Abu Simbel tour, or visit Aswan, in general, as it’s in the most southern, and hottest, part of Egypt. So, December through February are the best months to visit, weather-wise, but bear in mind that this is also the peak season.

If you’re traveling to Egypt in October or February, then make sure you plan your trip with the solar alignment in mind. You see, twice every year, on the 22nd of October and the 22nd of February, the sun penetrates the Temple of Abu Simbel, illuminating the inner sanctuary.

Fun fact: Before relocating the temple, the solar alignment took place on the 21st of October and February, instead of the 22nd. 

Unfortunately, I wasn’t lucky enough to witness the solar alignment even though I went on the 21st of February! Due to some circumstances, I had to make some changes to my travel plans so I left Aswan later on the 21st, a couple of days earlier than I originally planned.

The site is open daily from 6 AM to 5 PM (last entry at 4 PM). However, bear in mind that in Ramadan, entry is from 7 AM to 3 PM.

Tips to Make the Best Out of Your Abu Simbel Tour

• The earlier you start your Abu Simbel tour, the better. If you can start as early as right after sunrise, do so. The site is often overcrowded with tourists and that can ruin your experience, especially if you have to deal with entitled tourists like I did–that’s the worst kind!
• Don’t forget to pack breakfast, since you’ll miss it at the hotel, as well as snacks for the long day. There’s a cafeteria there, but I don’t recommend you rely on that as you’ll be overcharged for everything. If you inform your hotel that you’re going on the Abu Simbel tour, they will most likely pack you a breakfast box in the morning–it’s a common thing in Aswan.
• Make sure you bring a hat and apply (and reapply) sunscreen so you won’t get a heatstroke. Speaking of which, also pack a large water bottle to stay hydrated.
• As you walk out of the site, you’ll be forced to walk through souvenir shops. If you don’t want to be overcharged or stopped by vendors every few seconds, walk in the exit direction without letting your eyes wander, be assertive, and it’s best if you learn a couple of helpful Arabic phrases. “Laa Shokran” is “no, thank you” and “Khalas” is “enough!”

The Abu Simbel tour is more than just ticking off another historic site–it’s walking into a masterpiece of ancient engineering. The world-renowned temples are a tribute to power and a testament to the great lengths we’re willing to go to preserve our history. So, whether you find yourself drawn to the sheer grandeur of the site, the magnetic spiritual aura in its halls, or its fascinating story, Abu Simbel is a truly wonderful experience you will never forget.

Hadouta Masreya, which translates to “Egyptian Tale” in Arabic, is a traditional guesthouse named after the iconic song by legendary Egyptian singer Mohamed Mounir, who also happens to be a family friend of the owners. Being Nubian himself, Mohamed Mounir holds a special place in the hearts of his people, and the property pays homage to his legacy in a truly unique way. 

Instead of just numbers, each room is named after one of his songs, with the lyrics beautifully inscribed on the walls. This creative detail makes every stay a truly immersive experience, especially for Mounir’s lovers. 

It’s also worth mentioning that Hadouta Masreya was the second guesthouse ever to open its doors to the public in Gharb Seheil. One of the founders, Shereen, who’s an Egyptian solo female traveler herself, was the only woman to start her own project in the Nubian village at the time.

Hadouta Masreya’s Location in the Nubian Village 

Hadouta Masreya is located in Gharb Seheil, the most popular Nubian village in Aswan. This Nubian village is famous for its colorful houses and vibrant bazaar. This is where you should get the best souvenirs when in Aswan–there is far more variety and unique options than at the old Aswan Souk, and you can definitely get better deals than at Philae Temple. 

As for transportation, there’s a touristic ferry dock, just a couple of minutes’ walk from Hadouta Masreya, in the heart of the bazaar. However, the main transportation method to and from the Nubian village is the 3-wheeled motor tricycle. Since the road is rugged and isn’t well-paved, there aren’t taxis around. You need to take the tricycle to the bridge connecting the village with the city. 

A great perk about staying at Hadouta Masreya is that they can hire a private driver for you. Mohamed, the driver they hired for me, was super friendly and hospitable. He arrived early before my train arrived in Aswan, and he coordinated my pickup time with me in advance. On my way back home, he helped me with my luggage all the way till he made sure I got on my train back to Cairo safely. He even noticed I was falling asleep on our way to the station, so he stopped and brought me a Red Bull (he knew it was my favorite energy drink from an earlier conversation). It’s also worth mentioning that Mohamed was always on time, so don’t worry and don’t expect the typical Egyptian timing. 

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room–safety. I know this will be a great concern, especially if you’re a solo female traveler, but believe it or not, I’ve never felt as safe in my entire life as I have in the Nubian village. I’m not exaggerating, and this is not one of those cases where it’s all about personal experiences that vary from one person to the other. To prove to you the level of safety, local vendors in the Nubian village don’t bother to lock up their shops after dark! They simply cover their stands and displays to protect their merchandise from dust. This is how safe it is.

Accommodation

Hadouta Masreya offers single, double, and triple rooms, making the guesthouse perfect for solo travelers as well as those traveling in pairs or groups. Each air-conditioned ensuite room comes with clean towels and bed linens, as well as coat hangers and storage space. 

Some of the rooms come with a balcony and a premium Nile view—I stayed in one of those on my last visit. The room, as well as the balcony, were quite spacious, and I truly enjoyed working and reading with that view. The balcony, along with the songs bit I mentioned earlier, were among my favorite things about the accommodation itself. 

It doesn’t stop there–Hadouta Masreya is also implementing sustainable efforts. It’s the first guesthouse in the Nubian village to embrace upcycling by creatively repurposing wooden pallets into beds. This not only makes the property eco-friendly but also reflects its commitment to simplicity. Hadouta Masreya prioritizes hospitality, quality service, and a culturally immersive experience. For instance, they intentionally chose not to include TVs in any of the rooms to encourage guests to fully embrace the surrounding atmosphere.

Available Facilities

• Free and fast WiFi is available on-site, so you can save up on international mobile data plans. I was able to get some work done, and I even watched a Nordic noir while packing.
• Hadouta Masreya has 2 common areas; a spacious waiting area at the reception and a quiet rooftop with a killer Nile view.
• The guesthouse has its own in-house kitchen that offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner to guests. You can expect tasty Egyptian cuisine in sizeable portions. My favorite dish of theirs is, hands down, the Kebab Halla (Egyptian braised beef), and I also loved the mashed potatoes served at breakfast.

• Entertainment is also on the table—Hadouta Masreya hosts a Nubian party every few days, a must-do when in the Nubian village.
• In addition to that, they can also organize activities outside of the Nubian village of Gharb Seheil, such as felucca rides, sightseeing, and visits to other Nubian villages like Heissa Island. 
• Hadouta Masreya often offers their space to host retreats, such as wellness and yoga retreats, and workshops, providing facilitators with everything they need.

The Atmosphere

The Atmosphere in the Nubian Village

The Nubian village of Gharb Seheil is mostly famous for its traditional Nubian houses, painted in bright colors and murals, making it the most colorful place in Egypt. Nubians are known for their unmatched hospitality and generosity, so don’t be surprised if locals welcome you into their homes for a cup of tea, a meal, or even to meet their pet crocodiles! 

It’s worth mentioning that Gharb Seheil may no longer be as quiet as the other Nubian villages or how it once was. Its growing popularity in recent years has led to an influx of restaurants and guesthouses, so expect frequent traditional Nubian performances and celebrations after sunset.  

During the day, the Nubian village buzzes with the market’s hustle and bustle and the arrival of tourists at the ferry dock. It’s not as overwhelming as it sounds, though. In fact, the air is filled with the aroma of freshly brewed herbal tea and fragrant spices, adding to Gharb Seheil’s unique charm.

The Atmosphere at Hadouta Masreya

Just like the rest of the village, the staff at Hadouta Masreya falls no short of hospitality and generosity. Everyone who works there is super friendly and helpful and will make you feel right at home. 

In spite of the guesthouse’s cozy and relaxing atmosphere, it’s noteworthy that it’s a family-friendly place. The presence of families and big groups might influence the atmosphere at the restaurant or the reception, but don’t fret, I found the rooftop to be the perfect getaway whenever I wanted some peace and quiet in the evening. 

Value for Money

For bed and breakfast accommodation, expect to pay something between USD 70 and 175 per room per night if you’re a foreigner or EGP 1,540 and 3,755 if you’re an Egyptian. Prices vary depending on the travel dates, the occupancy, the size of the room, and whether or not it comes with a view. 

If you’re a solo traveler, expect to pay from USD 70 to 110 or from EGP 1,540 to 2,650 per night, which is great value for money when you consider food, WiFi, and the authentic Nubian experience. It’s also super budget-friendly when you compare it with hotel prices in the city, outside of the Nubian village.

Overall Experience

A lot of things can make guests return to a property–food, atmosphere, comfort, you name it! But to me personally, what keeps me going back to any business is always the service. In my opinion, that’s what makes or breaks any business, whether it’s a hotel or not. And that’s exactly what brought me back to Hadouta Masreya after all these years. But it wasn’t just any service—it was something truly special.

It all goes back to the story of how my solo travel journey began. As I mentioned earlier, when I took my first-ever solo trip to the Nubian village, I stayed at Hadouta Masreya. However, it wasn’t all rainbows and butterflies. In fact, for the most part, it was quite the opposite. You see, I fell incredibly ill throughout the entire trip. I had viral gastroenteritis, so you can probably imagine how miserable that was. I couldn’t keep food down, and because of that, I was constantly dizzy, so sightseeing in the scorching Aswan sun was always a struggle. My illness almost ruined the trip for me.

Luckily for me, the staff members at the guesthouse took care of me. They made sure I had meals that were easy on my stomach and even prepared a home remedy that worked like magic! That trip taught me my first solo travel lesson: always carry meds–I learned that the hard way! But what truly stuck with me was the kindness and warmth I experienced at Hadouta Masreya. That’s why this place holds such a special place in my heart.

Fast-forward to early 2025, the hospitality hadn’t changed one bit. As soon as I arrived in Aswan, I was met with the same warmth and kindness that made my first stay so memorable. The staff members went above and beyond to make sure I was comfortable and had everything I needed. They even organized an off-the-beaten-path tour for me when they found out I wasn’t interested in the typical tourist spots. This was by far the most fun and relaxing day of my whole trip.

Luxor and Aswan Transportation Options: Sleeper Train, Talgo Train, Flights, and More

Whether you’re traveling to Luxor or Aswan from Cairo or flying in from your home country, you’ll have to take one of the following transportation options. If you’ve never tried either before, making up your mind can be difficult. Lucky for you, I’ll break down my full experience with each transport method to help you reach the most suitable decision. 

But first, what are your options? The most commonly known transportation methods to or from Luxor or Aswan are the sleeper train, which many travelers have doubts about, and regular domestic flights. In addition to those, you can also hit the road, whether via bus or car; however, I don’t recommend either of those options–more on that later.

Trains: Sleeper Train VS Talgo Train

Sleeper Train

Let’s start with Egypt’s sleeper train, one of the most common and popular options. The trains themselves are pretty old, so don’t expect anything fancy; however, they’re fine and relatively clean. Each cabin has 2 convertible beds, the lower bunk is made up of regular seats that are later converted to a bed. You can’t convert the beds yourself, though–you need the conductor to do this for you. The cabin also has a convertible table, coat hangers, a mirror, and a sink. 

PRO TIP: Make sure to pack your own blanket as no covers are provided, and it gets chilly at night, especially if you’re traveling in the winter. 

As for the bathroom situation, it’s a shared bathroom. I honestly haven’t tried it myself, as luckily, I didn’t have to use the bathroom, but my picky friend did (I wasn’t traveling solo when I rode this train), and she said it was fine. But again, I wouldn’t have high expectations if I were you. 

Every ticket also includes a hot meal of your choice. Personally, I’m not a fan of food on trains in Egypt, in general, so you might want to bring snacks with you if you’re a picky eater, as it’s a long ride. The Cairo-Luxor train takes around 10 hours, and the Cairo-Aswan train takes around 12 hours, with the stops and all.

Overall, I didn’t mind the experience; to me, it seemed “adventurous,” if that makes any sense. The only thing that really bothered me was how often we were bothered by the conductor’s aggressive knocking and lack of patience. To be honest, most times he knocked, he had a valid reason, but he wasn’t patient when we didn’t open the door instantly, which was pretty frustrating. The cabin was too small, so getting through our luggage to the door took a few seconds, which apparently seemed inconvenient to him. I mean, I could’ve been changing my clothes as well. Also, he didn’t like it when he wanted to set up the beds when we weren’t ready to sleep–we told him we had work, but it still wasn’t ideal for him. 

You might be wondering, “but Nadine, this train sucks, why would I book it?” In most cases, aside from the sleeper train’s “adventurous” nature, travelers book it mainly for budget reasons, as trains are cheaper than flights. However, the price difference isn’t that big of a deal for foreigners as their train tickets are way more expensive than Egyptians’. 

For Egyptians, the sleeper train ticket costs EGP 1,050 per person for a 2-person cabin and EGP 2,050 for a single cabin. On the other hand, foreigners’ tickets for the sleeper train range between USD 90 and 130 depending on the cabin type: double or single occupancy. 

How to Book Egypt’s Sleeper Train?

The sleeper trains in Egypt are not operated by the Egyptian National Railways company but by a third party called Abela Trains. They have their own website and offices at the train stations. To book the sleeper train, you can either do it in person at the train station or via Abela Trains’ official website.

Talgo Train

If you think that the sleeper train is the only option to Luxor or Aswan, you’re wrong. There are a lot of different trains; there’s the Talgo train, the VIP Special Express (that’s just a name; there’s nothing premium about it), the Spanish train, and the Russian train. For a long and tiring ride like this one, the Talgo train is the best option from the regular seating trains as it’s the newest one, introduced in 2023.

The Talgo train is a modern air-conditioned one with 2 options: 1st class and 2nd class. The seats feel a lot like those of an airplane, so I just considered my ride like a long-haul flight. The main difference is that the seats in 1st class are bigger.

Each seat gets access to an electric socket and a USB port to charge devices, as well as a small bin. There’s also a food and beverage serving cart that passes by every now and then–you can get something and expect the steward to return later for payment. 

As for the bathroom situation on the Talgo train, they’re regularly cleaned between uses, so using the toilet wasn’t an issue at all. To be completely honest, though, I did have one incident where I couldn’t use the bathroom because of the previous occupant–let’s not get into the gross details. The cleaning guy did get in to fix the mess he made before I could use the bathroom, but I honestly just couldn’t. Other than that, you should be fine. 

How to Book the Talgo Train?

The Talgo train is operated by the Egyptian National Railways, so you can either book it online via the website or app or in person at the train station. Here are a few things you need to know about booking the Talgo train, though:

• Train tickets are released 2 weeks before travel dates, so booking before that isn’t an option.
• Online booking is, unfortunately, available for Egyptians only, so if you’re a foreigner, you have to book the Talgo train at the station beforehand.
• Online booking is full of bugs, and it’s not a very user-friendly process, so you want to try booking as soon as the tickets are out just in case.
• If you need to return your ticket for whatever reason, you need to return it and request a refund the same way you booked it. So, for instance, if you booked a ticket online and you need to return it, you must return it online and not at the train station, and vice versa. There will be a penalty fee, of course. 

Which Railway Stations to Ride From

The main railway station in Cairo is Ramses Station; however, trains heading to Upper Egypt usually take off and arrive at Giza Station and the newly opened Bashtil Station. The train will pass by both train stations anyway, but if your location in Cairo is close to both, Bashtil is much cleaner and nicer. Just bear in mind that if a train is heading to Luxor or Aswan from Cairo, it will take off from Bashtil first, then Giza.

Domestic Flights 

The fastest and most convenient way to travel to Luxor or Aswan from Cairo, or vice versa, is taking a domestic flight. The Cairo-Luxor flight takes around an hour, while the Cairo-Aswan flight takes around an hour and a half. Taking a flight will save up to 9-11 hours of travel, depending on where you’re going. Flights are usually more expensive than the Talgo train and the sleeper train, though, especially if you’re Egyptian, since train tickets are more expensive for foreigners. If you’re a foreigner, a flight might cost you the same or slightly more, depending on many factors, like your travel dates and airline. Speaking of airlines, those that operate domestically are EgyptAir, Nile Air, and Air Cairo. 

The best time to go to Luxor and Aswan is from October to April, when the weather is warm and pleasant. Temperatures during these months are ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities like hot air ballooning in Luxor. The peak tourist season, though, is from December through February, especially during Christmas break. For cheaper flights and fewer crowds, I’d avoid the holidays if I were you: Christmas break and the local mid-term vacation, which is usually from the end of January till mid-February. 

As for summer months, from May to September, that’s the low season; avoid that time at all costs! These are the hottest months in Egypt, and Upper Egypt (the south) is the hottest region in the entire country. Temperatures soar above 40°C (104°F), so both Luxor and Aswan will be unbearable. You can still travel to Egypt during that time as it’s a year-round destination, but it’s best to go to a beach town like Dahab or El Gouna.

Your best shot, budget-wise, would be the shoulder season, which is during the spring or fall months: March, April, October, and November. The temperatures would be higher than in winter, but still comfortable to travel, and you’ll manage to find cheaper flights during these times. Not to mention that, of course, there will be far fewer crowds than in the high season.

Booking a Domestic Flight in Egypt

I personally love using Skyscanner and Google Flights to look up domestic flights. For my top hacks and tips on how to find cheaper flights, make sure to read this guide. 

Other Transportation Options

Aside from domestic flights, the Talgo train, and the sleeper train, you can also take a bus or drive. However, I don’t recommend the Upper Egypt bus unless you’re completely broke and don’t mind sitting in a bus for 12 hours with zero legroom. 

As for driving, if you’re a foreigner, I don’t recommend driving in Egypt altogether. Driving here is an extreme sport, and since you won’t be used to the driving culture here, I don’t think it’s wise. If you’re Egyptian and decide to go on a road trip, as far as I know, the Upper Egypt roads were recently renovated, but you need to be careful as you pass through Qena, as I heard it’s not the best part of the road. 

Final Verdict

All in all, if I’d choose again between a flight, the Talgo train, or the sleeper train, I’d opt for the flight for comfort and convenience. If you don’t have a lot of vacation days but have the budget and plan your trip in advance so you can find good flight deals, you should be good to go. On the other hand, if you can’t manage to find cheap flights and you don’t mind wasting 10-12 hours of travel, then you can opt for the train, whether it’s the sleeper or Talgo train.

Saint Catherine is a mountainous Bedouin town in the heart of South Sinai, Egypt. The town isn’t just nature’s work of art or a hiking haven – it also has a rich history and sacred significance for all three Abrahamic religions. It’s believed that the Biblical story of the Burning Bush had taken place there. The town is also home to Mount Sinai, locally known as Jebel Mousa, one of the highest mountains in Egypt, and where Moses is believed to have received the 10 commandments. Not just that, but Saint Catherine is also home to the Jebeliya tribe, a Bedouin community with a mindblowing history worth reading about. 

The Best Hiking Trails in Saint Catherine, Egypt

From the highest mountains in the country to vast rugged valleys and canyons, Saint Catherine, Egypt offers a diverse range of trails for every adventurer. Feel free to mix and match any of the following hikes if you have the time to go on a multi-day trek. Just consult with your guide first about which routes go best with one another. 

P.S.: The following durations are approximate estimates for active hiking, covering both the ascent and descent. Keep in mind that factors such as time spent at the summit, break frequency, and individual fitness levels can influence these times.

Mountain Hikes in Saint Catherine, Egypt

#1 Mount Catherine

The highest mountain in Egypt, Mount Catherine, is a popular choice amongst Saint Catherine’s visitors for obvious reasons. Standing at 2,642 meters (8,668 ft), Mount Catherine offers a challenging yet rewarding hike to the country’s highest peak. The views from up there are absolutely breathtaking!

• Elevation: 2,642 m (8,668 ft)
• Approximate duration: 8-9 hours
• Difficulty level: Challenging 

#2 Mount Sinai

Another popular choice is hands down Mount Sinai, one of the tallest mountains in Egypt at 2,285 meters (7,497 ft). Locally referred to as Jebel Moussa, Mount Sinai is also a popular pilgrimage site, as it’s believed to be where Moses received the Ten Commandments. As you make your way down, you can also visit the famed St. Catherine Monastery at its base and see the site of the Burning Bush.

The Mount Sinai hike is the dearest to my heart because this was my first-ever hike – this was where I fell in love with hiking! Hiking Mount Sinai can be beginner-friendly if you’re physically active; however, the final 750 steps toward the summit are a bit challenging. But don’t fret – it’s totally worth every second of it! The sunrise and sunset views from up there are incredible!

• Elevation: 2,285 m (7,497 ft)
• Approximate duration: 4-5 hours
• Difficulty level: Moderate

#3 Mount Abbas

Coming in third place in terms of altitude is none other than Mount Abbas. It may not be as popular as Mount Sinai and Mount Catherine, but it sure has an interesting history as well. 

Abbas Pasha, former Wali of Egypt, had suffered from asthma, and doctors at the time had advised him to spend time somewhere with dry weather. To test the weather conditions, he ordered his people to place a piece of meat on several peaks to see how fast each would go bad. This experiment helped him choose this mountain to build a castle on the summit for him to stay for a while. However, the construction was stopped upon the death of Abbas Pasha and there’s nothing left up there but ruins, great views, and a great story to tell. 

Also, this was where I first witnessed snow in Egypt!

• Elevation: 2,383 m (7,818 ft)
• Approximate duration: 5.5-6 hours
• Difficulty level: Moderate

#4 Mount Safsafa

Located near Mount Sinai, Mount Safsafa offers a quieter alternative to the Mount Sinai hike if you’re seeking solitude. The hike is paved with stunning rock formations, which also means a lot of scrambling is involved, so you’ve got to be prepared for that. 

• Elevation: 2,168 m (7,113 ft)
• Approximate duration: 5.5-6.5 hours
• Difficulty level: Moderate

#5 Mount Bab El Donia

“Bab El Donia” is Arabic for “Gate of the World”. As the name suggests, this mountain brings its hikers magical views and scenic trails, offering them a truly exceptional and memorable experience.  

• Elevation: 2,090 m (6,857 ft)
• Approximate duration: 2.5-3 days
• Difficulty level: Moderate 

#6 Mount El Banat

This one may be named after a spooky legend, but the folk tale behind it is what attracts its visitors the most, believe it or not. The mountain was named Jebel El Banat, which means “the girls’ mountain” in Arabic, after a local legend. The legend says that 3 young women braided their hair together at the summit and sought refuge in the slopes to escape an arranged marriage.

• Elevation: 1,780 m (5,840 ft)
• Approximate duration: 7-8 hours
• Difficulty level: Moderate

Other Hikes in Saint Catherine, Egypt

Beyond its majestic mountains, Saint Catherine, Egypt is also home to an abundance of stunning landscapes, including valleys, canyons, and plateaus. You can explore the following places on standalone hikes or incorporate them into your mountain hikes as alternative routes. Either way, I promise you the journey will be rewarding. 

#1 Wadi Tlah 

This vast valley surrounded by marvelous granite cliffs offers a cinematic view of the desert landscape. On this picturesque trail, you may stumble upon occasional wildlife and wonderful acacia trees, adding to the whole experience.

• Elevation: 1,500 m (4,921 ft)
• Approximate duration: 3.5-4 hours
• Difficulty level: Easy

#2 Wadi El Arbae’in

Wadi El Arbae’in, which is Arabic for “Valley of the 40”, is the perfect fusion of adventure and cultural exploration. The hike through history will take you through a rugged terrain with occasional lush vegetation and natural springs, depending on the season. During the hike, you will also pass by local Bedouin gardens and landmarks of historical significance. If you’d like to take an alternative route to Mount Sinai, this is a great option.

P.S.: This trail will be closed until further notice.

#3 Darb Ahmar

Darb Ahmar, which literally translates to “Red Path” in Arabic, is a fun choice if you’d like to take a non-traditional route to Mount Catherine. It’s a longer and more challenging route, as it involves a lot of scrambling; however, this means it’s more adventurous. It’s also a very scenic trail, so I highly recommend it. 

• Elevation: 2,318 m (7,605 ft)
• Approximate duration: 7-8 hours
• Difficulty level: Challenging

#4 Farsh Elias

Farsh Elias, or Elijah’s Plateau, is known for its tranquility and panoramic views. It’s an ideal spot to rest and recharge on multi-day hikes, or for a chill day hike just to connect with nature.

• Elevation: 1,900 m (6,234 ft)
• Approximate duration (from Far’a trail): 5-6 hours
• Approximate duration (from St. Catherine Monastery trail): 3.5-4 hours
• Difficulty level (from Far’a trail): Moderate
• Difficulty level (from St. Catherine Monastery trail): Easy

#5 Farsh El Loza

If you’re looking for a laid-back hike with lots of hidden gems and scenic views, Farsh El Loza would be perfect. From almond trees, which the plateau was named after, to small churches hidden in the mountains, the hike to Farsh El Loza is loaded with surprises. I remember stumbling upon a small cute church called “El Keneesa El Madsousa” which translates to “the tucked church”, and behind it was this breathtaking natural pool!

• Elevation: 1,920 m (6,299 ft)
• Approximate duration: 5.5-6.5 hours
• Difficulty level: Moderate

When booking a hike, choosing the right operator is crucial, especially when hiking in Egypt. The trails here can be pretty complicated, and the South Sinai desert can feel a bit maze-like, that’s why it’s best to hire a Bedouin guide. And since outdoor safety should be your number one priority when hiking, it’s also important to choose a trusted experienced guide.

Saint Catherine, Egypt is known for its unique high-altitude desert climate, which sets it apart from other destinations in the region. The town is situated at an elevation of approximately 1,586 meters (5,203 ft) above sea level, meaning that it enjoys cooler temperatures, especially in winter. In fact, it’s the only place in Egypt that witnesses snow and hail every single year – usually around December or January. 

That said, it’s important to check the weather forecast in advance and plan accordingly. Be prepared for warm days and cold nights, especially when packing.

Packing the Right Gear

Aside from packing the appropriate clothes (and layers) for Saint Catherine’s unique climate, it’s also important to pack the right gear. Choose the right hiking shoes for the terrains you’ll be hiking, and don’t forget other essentials like a headlamp, sun protection, high-energy snacks, and so on. 

Be Ready to Adapt

Since we’ve already established that the climate is unique in Saint Catherine, Egypt, you also need to know that it can be pretty unpredictable, especially in winter. That’s why you need to be ready to adapt and keep an open mind towards making last-minute changes in your itinerary if necessary. 

On my last multi-day trek in Saint Catherine, I remember we had to make some last-minute changes due to extreme weather conditions for our own safety. We ended up having a wonderful time regardless as we got to see other beautiful places otherwise we wouldn’t have seen.  

Respect the Environment

Saint Catherine, Egypt is considered a natural protectorate, and even if it wasn’t, it’s important that you respect Mother Nature. Follow the 7 Principles of Leave No Trace; avoid littering; don’t take anything with you, and be respectful of local wildlife and sacred sites.

About Christmas in Egypt

The Christian population in Egypt makes up about 10%, with the majority of which are Coptic Orthodox Christians. Other Christian sects include Catholics, Protestants, Greek Orthodox, Anglicans, and Armenians. That means that Christmas in Egypt is actually celebrated twice – once on January 7th as the majority follows the Julian calendar, while the others celebrate on December 25th as they follow the Gregorian calendar like in the west.

What Christmas in Egypt Looks Like

Christmas may not be widely celebrated here; however, like I previously mentioned, it holds a major cultural significance. Aside from church services, masses, and religious rituals, the festive vibes take over streets and public spaces as well. So, expect to see Christmas trees and decorations at airports, malls, storefronts, and restaurants. Lots of Egyptians also decorate their homes starting December, regardless of their religious backgrounds. 

Personally, Christmas has always been part of my life growing up. We celebrated the holiday in school, since I was in Kindergarten – we’d have plays, carnivals, gingerbread cookies, and Santa would come over. Even at home, putting up the Christmas tree with my family had always been a tradition, so when I moved out and had a place of my own, I had to have my own tree! And as I grew up, Christmas dinners with friends of all faiths, along with a fun game of Secret Santa, became a thing.

One of my favorite things about growing up in Egypt is that me and my friends have always celebrated each others’ holidays together. Be it Christmas, Ramadan, or Eid, we’d all get together and enjoy it together. 

Festive Things to Do at Christmas in Egypt

Christmas in Cairo, Egypt

If you’re spending Christmas in Egypt, given that it’s the capital city, Cairo’s where you’ll most likely experience the holiday spirit. Here are a few festive things you can do over Christmas break:

#1 Visit the iconic churches of Cairo 

Believe it or not, there are many wonderful historical churches and cathedrals in Cairo that are worth visiting if you’re spending Christmas in Egypt. I highly recommend you spend a day touring Coptic Cairo, also known as Old Cairo, the neighborhood where the 3 Abrahamic religions meet. It’s referred to as Coptic Cairo as it’s believed that this is where the holy family have taken shelter as they fled to Egypt. So, by visiting, you’d be seeing parts of the famed Holy Family trail. There, you can visit some of Cairo’s iconic religious sites, including the Hanging Church, St. George’s Church, and the Coptic Museum.

In addition to exploring Coptic Cairo, you can’t miss paying a visit to St. Simon “the Tanner” Monastery. This Cairene hidden gem (literally), also widely known as the Cave Church, is the largest church in the Middle East. Nestled in the heart of Mokattam Hill; hence the name, in the Zabbaleen City area, this architectural masterpiece dates back to the 10th century. But heads up, Zabbaleen City, Arabic for “garbage city”, is literally a garbage collection and recycling neighborhood. So, expect a terrible smell on your ride to the Cave Church, but it’s totally worth it!

#2 Stroll through Christmas markets

The most festive vibes will most likely be at Christmas markets. However, unlike Christmas markets in Europe, and other destinations, markets in Egypt are slightly different. Instead of markets that last the entire holiday season, Christmas markets in Egypt tend to be 1-day or 2-day events. But don’t fret, there are plenty of those!

If you’re spending Christmas in Egypt, here are a few ways to find pop-up Christmas markets in Cairo:

• Keep an eye on the social media accounts of popular event organizers such as Cairo Flea Market, Bazarna Pop-Up Society, or Miss Basket Events.
• You might also want to check out the social media accounts of prominent malls and commercial complexes like District 5, Arkan Plaza, or Walk of Cairo. 
• Follow the social media accounts of big lifestyle magazines and online directories that often publish compilations of events and happenings. Those include CairoScene, Scene Now Events, Cairo Nights Out, and Cairo360.
• Check out community groups on Facebook where people will most likely be posting about Christmas markets or seasonal fairs. 

#3 Attend Winter Wonderland

Christmas in Egypt wouldn’t be complete without a visit to Zed Park’s famed Winter Wonderland, an annual carnival packed with festive lights and decorations, themed rides, live entertainment, and more. There, you can browse their pop-up markets, enjoy their ice-skating rink, and savor Christmas treats. The vibes are absolutely magical that I’ve turned this into a year tradition to go and win myself a stuffed toy – I seriously don’t think I’m too old for that.

Just make sure to check Zed Park’s schedule in December as the carnival’s dates often change. 

#4 Check out the Cairo Opera House’s schedule

Hit two birds with one stone by visiting the iconic Cairo Opera House and attending a Christmas event at the same time. Check their December and January calendars as they usually host Christmas music events, as well as ballets like The Nutcracker. The latter is my personal favorite activity to do during Christmas in Egypt!

#5 Look up festive dining experiences

Many luxury hotels in Cairo, like the Four Seasons, the Nile Ritz-Carlton, or Marriott Zamalek, often host Christmas dinners and brunches. So, make sure to check out their websites and social media accounts.

Christmas in Other Egyptian Destinations

On the other hand, don’t expect major holiday vibes if you’re traveling to other destinations around the country. Festive vibes are more likely to be apparent in big cities like Cairo and Alexandria; however, there aren’t really holiday-related activities in smaller towns. You might see a Christmas tree here and some decorations there if you go to a resort town like El Gouna or Sharm El Sheikh, but not much more.

Practical Travel Tips for Christmas in Egypt

• Book your accommodation early! Christmas in Egypt is a high-season holiday for tourists, and hotels in popular destinations like Cairo, Luxor, or Aswan will most likely fill up quickly. So, make sure you plan your trip and reserve well in advance to secure good rates. 
• Pack for varying temperatures depending on the destinations you’re including in your itinerary. Winter in Egypt is cold, but still much warmer than in Western destinations, so don’t pack for a White Christmas. 
• As I mentioned before, Christmas events may be announced last minute, so you better keep an eye on prominent Egyptian social media accounts. 
• Don’t miss out on the Egyptian festive treats, kahk, which are special cookies Egyptians have during religious holidays such as Christmas and Eid. You can find those at local pastry shops.

About the Greco-Roman Museum

The Greco-Roman Museum of Alexandria, also known as the Graeco-Roman Museum, is the only attraction dedicated to the antiquities and civilization of Egypt during the Greek and Roman eras. 

Established by Italian Giuseppe Botti in 1892, it’s the earliest purpose-built museum in Egypt, first opening its doors in September 1895. In 2005, it closed to carry out a comprehensive expansion and redevelopment project. After almost 2 decades, in late 2023, the museum finally reopened its doors to the public.

Greco-Roman Museum: Must-See Exhibits/Collections

The museum, consisting of more than 27 halls, with more than 6,000 artifacts on display, walks you through various facets of Egypt’s civilization in the Greek and Roman eras until 641 AD. Here are the exhibits you will get to explore on your visit:

Alexander the Great

The Greco-Roman Museum pays homage to Alexandria’s founder, Alexander the Great, through this section. In 332 BC, Alexander marched into Egypt and took control of the Persian garrison, where he was viewed as a liberator by the Egyptians.

On his way to Siwa to visit the Temple of Amun, also known as the Temple of the Oracle, he selected the fishermen’s village of Rhakotis as a site to be build a new capital, which was later come to be known as Alexandria. Fast-forward to 323 BC, Alexander died in Babylon.

The Ptolemaic Rule

In 306/5 BC, Ptolemy, the son of Lagos, declared himself the king of Egypt and consistent the construction of Alexandria. To honor Alexander and his kingdom, he managed to transfer his body from Babylon to Alexandria; however, the burial site remains a myster to this day. 

Ptolemy I was succeeded by 14 kings who all bore the same name; hence the name of the era, all leading up to the famed Cleopatra VII. 

The Roman Period

In 31 BC, Egypt was captured by Octavian, also known as Augustus and Gaius Julius Caesar, adding the country to the Roman Empire. 

Science & Intellectuality

It’s believed that Ptolemy I was the one who initiated the concept the Mouseion (the shrine/temple of muses) and its great library. Those played a major role in the literary and scientific life in Alexandria and Hellenistic Egypt. 

Religious Life

The new Ptolemaic kingdom was in need of a new god who would resemble the beliefs of both of its citizens; the Egyptians and Greeks. Sarapis was the Greek incarnation of the Memphite deity of Osiris-Apis. He was an image of Osiris in the body of the bull, Apis, and in his human form, Sarapis resembled several Greek gods like Zeus, Hades, and Helios. 

A temple dedicated to Sarapis was built at the Acropolis of Alexandria, where the Column of Diocletian’s, also known as Pompey’s Pillar, stands today. Sarapis, together with Isis and Harpocrates, formed the holy triad of Alexandria.

Afterlife

The Greco-Roman era in Egypt, that lasted for almost a millennium, saw the funerary beliefs of 3 of the most important civilizations in the history of mankind come together. The Afterlife exhibits showcases the tools and objects that were used in burials during that time. Some of the most significant artifacts on display include mummy shrouds, masks, stone sarcophagi, canopic jars, and more.

The Economy

The Greek ruling of Egypt acted as a major turning point, reshaping the eastern trade. Various ports across the country were established and safe roads linking those ports to the Nile Valley were paved. As a result, Indian, Arabian, and African merchandise, such as incense, silk, and ivory, were exported from Alexandria to the rest of the Mediterranean region.

Life and Art in the Byzantine Period

Byzantine art was a form of imperial art inspired by Christianity and Greek mythology. That’s why the subject matter of the most prominent Byzantine art was mainly the combination of religious and imperial themes. 

Coptic Art

Coptic art first came out in Egypt around the 2nd century AD with the spread of Christianity. The artistic productions by Christian Egyptians were often referred to as Coptic art. 

The most prominent artistic product in Coptic art was textiles, as they were not just vibrant fabrics, but also served as a source of information about the social classes. It’s also worth mentioning that almost all Coptic murals were monastic and most of the icons were found in old Egyptian churches. 

Ras El Soda

This exhibit boasts a group of finely-executed marble sculptures that were found near the temple of Ras El Soda, the only one that survived from Roman Alexandria.

Greco-Roman Museum’s Location and Directions

The Greco-Roman Museums is located on Fouad Street, also known as Al Horreya Road’s extension; however, the entrance is from the side road, Al Mathaf street. This entire neighborhood is Alexandria’s old Downtown, which is my favorite in the whole city. Not just because it’s where I grew up, but also because it’s the area that reflects Alexandria’s cosmopolitan spirit, as well as its history and art scene, the most. I highly recommend you go on a long walk around this neighborhood if you have the time. 

If you’re coming from Cairo, lucky for you, the Greco-Roman Museum is only 10 minutes away from the Cairo-Alexandria Desert Road. It’s also a 4-minute ride from the Alexandria Railway Station. Here’s the museum’s exact location.

• Working hours: Open daily from 9 am till 5 PM (tickets office closes at 4:30 PM).
• Ramadan working hours: Open daily from 9 am till 4 PM (tickets office closes at 3 PM).

• Tickets for foreign students: EGP 150 
• Tickets for Egyptians and Arabs: EGP 40

• Free entry for children under 6, senior citizens and Arab expats over 60, and the handicapped.

On-site amenities include restrooms, both an outdoor and indoor cafeteria, as well as a gift shop. There are also elevators available, making the museum accessible to everyone. In addition to those, there’s a library, a lectures hall, and a VIP hall. 

Things to Know Before Visiting the Greco-Roman Museum

• Debit/Credit card payments only are accepted.

• Underground parking is available for a fee, but it’s not open yet.
• Professional filming/photography equipment such as DSLR cameras, lighting equipment, tripods, and drones are prohibited.
• Non-professional, non-commercial personal photography using smartphones is allowed.

Greco-Roman Museum: Insider Tips

• Try to go early! The museum is huge and needs time to properly explore it.
• Familiarize yourself with these eras in advance if you’re not going on a guided tour.
• Be strategic with your itinerary. Here are the nearby attractions worth checking out on the same day: Alexandria National Museum (2 mins), Roman Amphitheater (3 mins), Bibliotheca Alexandrina (5 mins), Serapeum of Alexandria (10 mins), Catacombs (12 mins), Citadel of Qaitbay (12 mins).

My Experience at the Greco-Roman Museum

I remember going to the Greco-Roman Museum with my grandma when I was a little girl, so when it reopened, I got so excited when I recreated my visit with her and my aunt.

Generally speaking, I was very impressed with the renovations and the curation. I loved how the museum’s exhibits were categorized thematically, making the visit like telling a story. I also remember that there was a section where people could rest on benches while watching a slideshow presentation about the museum. That was a win-win, in my opinion – you can rest without wasting much time. 

Like I mentioned earlier, the museum is huge. So, if you’re tight on time and only going to Alexandria for a day trip, it’s best if you start your day early and familiarize yourself with the history in advance. This way, you can easily take in the information at the Greco-Roman Museum and have more time for other important sites like Bibliotheca Alexandrina or the Roman Amphitheater.

Where to Stay in Alexandria

If you decide to dedicate a weekend, or a couple of days, to explore Alexandria, you’ve come to the right person for accommodation recommendations. Take it from an Alexandrian, the best area to stay is Ramleh Station. Remember when I told you earlier about the old Downtown? That’s part of it! So, staying there means you’ll be staying in the heart of the city’s historic and cultural hub. Not to mention that it’s a pretty affordable area and very close to most tourist attractions. 

My top 2 hotels in the area are Steigenberger Cecil Alexandria and Paradise Inn Windsor Palace – the first one is a bit pricier but it’s my favorite. However, I love both of them because they’re historic hotels with a palace-like ambiance and a sea view.

Unfortunately, there aren’t any decent hostels in Alexandria if you’re a solo traveler. So, if you’re on a tight budget, then it’s best to squeeze your itinerary to fit a day trip from Cairo. 

In Conclusion…

The Greco-Roman Museum is a must-visit when in Alexandria as it shows how the old capital city was a beacon of sciences and different cultures and civilizations. It introduces its visitors to the principals Alexandria have always reflected, knowledge and intellectuality. This is not shock as Alexandria was a destination where scholars and philosophers of the ancient world flocked to for its cultural and civilizational influence.

About the Grand Egyptian Museum

Stretching across 120 acres of land, the Grand Egyptian Museum, is considered the world’s largest archaeological museum. The museum boasts more than 100,000 ancient Egyptian artifacts, including King Tut’s entire treasure collection, which, for the first time ever, will be on display alongside artifacts from Egypt’s long history. So, expect archaeological artifacts dating back to thousands of years of civilization in Egypt, from the predynastic period to the Greco-Roman era.

The museum, overlooking the Great Pyramids of Giza, was designed by the Irish firm Heneghan Peng Architects. Its construction first began in 2005 but due political and financial setbacks, as well as the global pandemic, its opening was postponed several times. A small section of the museum first opened its doors to the public in early 2023, and now (October 2024), the GEM complex is offering limited access to more exhibits to test site readiness and the visitor experience ahead of the official opening. 

Grand Egyptian Museum: Must-See Exhibits/Collections

Like I mentioned above, there’s limited access to certain areas at the moment. Currently, admission is limited to the main galleries, grand hall, grand staircase; in addition to the commercial area and outdoor gardens. On the other hand, access to the Tuntankhamun galleries will be available after the official opening. 

Here are a few highlights you will want to cover during your visit:

• The world’s only Hanging Obelisk.
• The marvelous Grand Hall and the iconic statue of Ramses II.
• The Grand Staircase gallery boasting more than 60 remarkable artifacts.
• 12 carefully curated exhibits that make up the main galleries, exploring Egypt’s rich history.

Grand Egyptian Museum: Insider Tips

• To avoid crowds, it’s best if you visit the museum early in the morning or late in the afternoon.
• I highly recommend the 90-minute guided tour as the guides are incredibly knowledgable and great storytellers – it’s the best way to experience the museum.
• The tour will also save you time if you need to squeeze in several stops in your day itinerary. Cairo’s a huge city and navigating from one area to another can be time-consuming already especially in its crazy traffic. 
• Try to pair your museum visit with the Great Pyramids of Giza visit as they’re very close in proximity. Just make sure you visit the pyramids first, super early in the morning, as crowds there can be unbearable later during the day.

My Experience at the Grand Egyptian Museum

When I first went to the Grand Egyptian Museum during its first trial period, I was truly impressed. An insane sense of pride was taking over as everything was incredibly impressive and up to international standards.

Aside from our astonishing history and heritage that have the power to drop jaws, here are a few  things I absolutely loved about the Grand Egyptian Museum.

First things first, the design and architecture are absolutely stunning, especially that of the facade. Even the smallest details that were taken into consideration are mindblowing. I wouldn’t want to spoil anything for you – you’ve got to go and see for yourself! Additionally, every single staff member was extremely presentable, knowledgeable, professional, and super friendly. The quality of service was top-notch – tour guides, info desk reps, security, vendors, and even janitors, everyone was exceptional.

Moving on to the commercial area, seeing the array of local brands and local restaurant chains representing was super pride-worthy! Also, the museum’s official gift shop was super cool! Around 90% of the products were manufactured by local brands and every single item on display was of premium quality and design!

The Grand Egyptian Museum often acts as a venue to lots of cultural events. From concerts in the gardens to educational programs, featuring talks and exhibitions, and more, expect the museum to be busy on some ocassions. That’s why it’s important to check there are any events held there during your trip as those usually require special access.

When Is Winter in Egypt?

Wondering when is the best time to visit Egypt? Fortunately, Egypt is a year-round destination. It’s warm throughout the year and there’s always a place to visit depending on when you plan to travel. The best time to visit, in my opinion, is during the fall, followed by spring, for milder weather conditions. However, the seasons here tend to blend seamlessly into one another, with subtle transitions, making fall and spring months pass by quickly. 

So, even though winter in Egypt is short, it’s a great time to visit for various reasons:

• Winter in Egypt lasts longer than spring and fall months, so you have more travel dates’ options.
• It coincides with long winter breaks during Christmas and New Year.
• Winter in Egypt isn’t harsh and often warm enough to enjoy in some destinations.
• There are plenty of beautiful destinations that are best explored during fall or winter as they’d be too hot to visit in the summer. 

Winter in Egypt typically starts in November or December and lasts through February or early March. When exactly it begins and ends really depends on the destination you’re visiting. For instance, winter usually arrives earlier in Alexandria, or the North in general, than Cairo. Winter also tends to be rainy up there, but drier and cooler in destinations with desert-like temperatures. 

Temperature in Egypt in Winter

Generally speaking, as I just mentioned, rainfall is minimal in Egypt, mostly limited to northern, coastal cities like Alexandria. The rest of the country is known for dry and sunny winters.

The weather in Egypt in winter is mild and pleasant – daytime temperatures average between 15°C and 20°C (59°F to 68°F), while nighttime temperatures can drop to 10°C (50°F) or lower. Desert regions experience colder nights.

On the other hand, during spring and fall months, temperatures are moderate, typically between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F), making these seasons comfortable for travel.

The Best Places to Visit in Egypt in Winter

Cairo

A trip to Egypt wouldn’t be possible without adding its capital city, Cairo, to your itinerary. From the iconic ancient world wonder, the Great Pyramids of Giza, to Old Cairo, the majestic Saladin Citadel, there’s no shortage of things to do in the vibrant capital. 

Lots of travelers often make the mistake of passing through for a day or two, but there’s so much more to see and do in Cairo than the touristic clichés. And the best time to enjoy what the city has to offer is during the winter so you can escape the dry summer heat.

Luxor

If it’s your first time in Egypt, Luxor is a must-visit! The historic city is often referred to as the world’s greatest open-air museum as it features ⅓ of the world’s monuments. Luxor is home to many fascinating archaeological sites such as the Karnak Temple, Luxor Temple, the Valley of the Kings and Queens, and much more. 

It’s also the perfect place to check riding a hot air balloon off your bucket list!

Aswan

A trip to Aswan goes hand in hand with a trip to Luxor as they’re very close in proximity. They’re both located in Upper Egypt, the most-southern part of the country, which explains why winter is the best time to visit.

Even though Aswan features stunning monuments such as the Philae Temple, it offers more of a peaceful retreat along the Nile. That’s why I usually recommend visiting Luxor first, especially if you’re taking a Nile cruise, and ending your trip in Aswan to relax. It’s also a great opportunity to experience the Nubian culture when there.

Fayoum

Located just south of Cairo, Fayoum makes the perfect weekend getaway from the capital for nature and adventure lovers. From exploring stunning desert landscapes of Wadi El Hitan to sipping on traditional tea on Lake Qarun or pottery making in Tunis Village, the oasis has so much to offer.

Siwa

Siwa may be a long drive away from Cairo, but this paradise on earth is absolutely worth the trip. Located in the heart of the western desert, winter is definitely the best time to visit. Known for its picturesque palm groves, crystal blue salt lakes, and natural hot springs, Siwa offers a truly exceptional experience. Not to mention its interesting history that’s worth learning about at sites like the Shali Fortress and the Temple of the Oracle.

Black & White Deserts

If you’re a nature lover or an adventurer at heart, the Black & White Deserts offer the ultimate camping experience in outworldly locations. The Black Desert’s volcanic terrains and the White Desert’s limestone rock formations will blow your minds for sure.

Saint Catherine

Another perfect destination for adrenaline junkies and outdoorsy travelers is hands down Saint Catherine. Located in the Sinai Peninsula, South Sinai to be more precise, Saint Catherine is one of the country’s most serene, spiritual, and adventurous destinations at the same time. It’s Egypt’s ultimate hiking destination all thanks to its stunning mountains, valleys, and canyons. Especially because it’s home to Egypt’s 3 highest summits; Mount Catherine, Mount Sinai, and Mount Abbas. 

Not just that, but Saint Catherine also offers a spiritua journey. It’s where Moses is believed to have received the 10 commandments and it’s home to the historic Saint Catherine’s Monastery, one of the world’s oldest.

Dahab

If you’re looking for a coastal destination, I definitely recommend this heavenly town, also in Sinai. Most people might think I’d recommend Sharm El Sheikh, but this laid-back seaside town beats the all-inclusive resorts of Sharm El Sheikh all the way. 

Dahab offers a more authentic experience and its magical vibes charms all its first-time visitors for all the right reasons. It’s the perfect place for diving, snorkeling, kite surfing, rock climbing, and all sorts of adventures. Its chilled-out atmosphere also makes it the perfect hub for digital nomads in Egypt. I consider Dahab my home away from home and it’s where I choose for my annual getaway – so I’m definitely biased.

El Gouna

Another coastal destination that’s dear to my heart is El Gouna, a vibrant, lavish private town by the Red Sea. Its known for its crystal clear lagoons, vibrant marina, and lively nightlife. So, if you’re seeking a luxurious beach getaway that’s much hipper than Hurghada, but only half an hour away, El Gouna should be on your radar.

What to Pack for Egypt in Winter

Packing for Egypt in Winter requires a balance of both warm and light layers, especially if you’re traveling to different destinations. Temperatures vary depending on the destination and time of day, so it’s best to be prepared. Here’s everything you might need:

Clothes

• Light layers: Daytime temperatures can be warm, so bring lightweight clothing with breathable materials such as t-shirts, linen shirts, and comfortable pants.
• Warm layers: For cooler evenings, you can pack a sweater, hoodie, or fleece jacket.
• Jacket or coat: In Cairo and desert destinations, nighttime temperatures can drop significantly, so you will also need a warm coat or jacket.
• Comfortable walking shoes: For exploring historical sites or desert treks, pack comfortable sneakers or running shoes. And if you’re planning to hike, you must pack appropriate hiking boots.
• Scarf or shawl: This will come in handy as it provides added warmth, modesty when visiting religious sites, as well as protection against desert winds.
• Jeans or pants: Comfy, casual pants or jeans for exploring cities or more conservative areas.
• Beach wear: If you’re traveling to a coastal destination, it can be warm enough for a swim, depending on when you visit. It’s also appropriate to wear shorts and tank tops in destinations like Dahab or El Gouna. 

Accessories

• Sunglasses: Even if you’re traveling to Egypt in winter, the sun can be strong. So, bring a good pair of UV-protective sunglasses.
• Hat/beanie: A hat will come in handy for sun protection during the day and a beanie for warmth in the evening, especially if you’re going to the desert.
• Gloves: If you’re spending time in the desert, you’ll definitely need a pair of gloves for cold mornings and evenings.

• Lip balm
• Moisturizer

A lively area, centrally located and named after the iconic lighthouse and El Fanar Street. It’s best known for its dining options, diving centers, and beachfront shops and cafés.

Mashraba

Another commercial area, but a busier one, that also partially stretches along the promenade. It boasts a wide variety of shops and restaurants.

Ideal for: travelers looking for more budget stays but still want to be close to the hustle and bustle of the town.

Ard El Game’eya 

This one’s a less touristy and a more residential area that’s a little far from the center and its attractions. 

Ideal for: travelers who don’t mind compromising proximity for more budget stays (and ideally have a bike or car for commuting).

Tanmia

Another residential area that offers a tranquil, budget-friendly living experience. It’s also removed from the touristy areas, but it’s closer to the Lighthouse area.

3 Ways to Find a Place to Rent in Dahab

Option #1: Browse Facebook Groups

The easiest way to find a place to rent in Dahab is to browse relevant Facebook groups. Lots of local landlords and brokers post their listings on social media and Facebook is the platform where you’ll find endless options. You can also post what you’re looking for exactly and most definitely some people will reach out to you with offerings.

Tips on How to Vet Listings and Spot Potential Scams

Before you go ahead and rent in Dahab the first place you like online, it’s crucial to be vigilant to avoid getting scammed. So, here are a few tips to vet listings while browsing to make sure everything’s safe and legitimate:

• Check the profile of the landlord or broker that posted the listing. I’m not telling you to stalk them, but going through their social media can help verify their identity and spot potential red flags.
• Request a video or a video call to remotely tour the property. This can help verify the legitimacy of the description and will help you check things that aren’t visible in photos like water pressure, for instance.
• Have someone go inspect the property themselves if you know anyone already staying in Dahab or arriving before you.
• Avoid sending a deposit before making sure the property is consistent with its description.
• Use verified and traceable payment methods and avoid wire transfers. Most locals there will probably share with you their Instapay or eWallet (such as Vodafone Cash) details, which are common in Egypt and legit, so don’t worry. However, Instapay currently doesn’t work with non-Egyptian cards, but if your landlord has a Vodafone Cash account, you can easily send the money from some local supermarkets across the country. If you’re outside of Egypt and traveling directly to Dahab, then you might want to check with the landlord if they have a PayPal account or if they can wait till you arrive.
• Look out for potential red flags during your communication with the landlord/broker. Are they unresponsive? Are they too pushy? How about their terms? Are they too vague?

What to Look for in Listings Before You Rent in Dahab

• A detailed description of the property: exact location, amenities, number of rooms, nearby attractions, house rules, etc…
• Clear high-resolution photos for the entire property.
• Consistency between photos and description.
• Clear rental terms and conditions: price, deposit, cancelation policy, etc…
• Reviews by former tenants if available.

Option #2: Book a Short-Term Stay First

The downside of renting in Dahab via Facebook is that you don’t get to see the property until you arrive. So, if the place turns out unlike the pictures or not up to your standards for whatever reason, by the time you arrive, it’s usually too late as most landlords/brokers will request a sending a deposit.

This takes us to option number 2 – if you have the budget and are not constrained by a pet (like myself), it’s best if you book a short-term stay first. Book a few nights at one of the many hotels or hostels in Dahab first for a chance to inspect properties in person. You might also stumble upon good properties that aren’t listed online when you’re physically there. Not to mention that this way you can take your time to explore different areas and compare living situations. 

Of course, the problem with that is that due to your limited time, you might miss out on great properties if they’re already booked. You might also end up paying more for booking last minute in some cases, and there’s the added budget for your hotel stay too, which will most likely be more expensive than a rental per night.

Option #3: Leverage Your Network in Dahab

One of the most reliable ways to rent in Dahab is through someone you already know and trust. If you’ve been to Dahab before and have connections, leverage your social network! Consider contacting local friends, other digital nomads, restaurant owners, waiters, and baristas, only to name a few. Most probably someone (or more) will either know brokers or will be renting a place themselves – it’s a very common side hustle in Dahab. In the worst-case scenario, they will be able to guide you and connect you with the right people.

Things to Inspect at the Property

As soon as you’re on ground and can inspect the property in person, there are a few things you need to look out for:

• Location safety
• Whether or not the windows are secure
• Whether or not the locks are properly secured
• Water pressure
• Electricity
• Internet speed (if WiFi was promised)
• Noise levels

Understand the Rental Terms

As I previously mentioned, vague rental terms can raise a red flag. That’s why it’s important to discuss and negotiate the terms and make sure everything is clear from the very beginning. Here are some of the important terms you should discuss with your landlord/broker before you rent in Dahab:

• Rental duration
• Utilities included
• Security deposit
• Maintenance responsibilities
• House rules (e.g.: Is indoor smoking allowed? Is the property pet-friendly? Are you allowed to host visitors?)

Things to Know in Advance

If it’s your first time to rent in Dahab, especially if you’re not Egyptian, there are a few local insights that you need to know to help you set the right expectations or be well-prepared.

• Landlords and brokers are required by the Dahab police to notify them whenever a new tenant rents a place. They also need to send a copy of your identification.
• Contracts are not common in Dahab if you’re renting for a short period of time. Sure, a few months is a long-term stay, but it’s not permanent. 
• Unmarried Egyptian couples are prohibited from staying together as per the Egyptian law. It’s completely fine if you’re in a foreign couple/group, but if one of you is Egyptian, then it might cause them trouble. It’s almost impossible to stay in a hotel as they’re liable, but some people work around this with rentals if the landlord is fine with it. However, it’s important to understand that it’s common to get turned down by some landlords as it’s socially frowned upon as well. 
• It’s very common for tenants in Dahab to lease rooms in their apartments, which I don’t always recommend unless it’s through someone you trust. It’s best if you deal with the landlord directly.
