Cairo vs. Giza: What’s the Difference?

Before diving into the neighborhood breakdown, I thought I’d address this first, as many first-time visitors don’t understand this and often get confused. A lot of tourists often think that Giza is a neighborhood in Cairo, where the pyramids are located. While the Great Pyramids of Giza are indeed located in Giza, it’s not a neighborhood.

The truth is: Giza and Cairo are two different governorates. However, due to urban overlap, they’re physically merged, only separated by the Nile, and together, they make up Greater Cairo. So, being in Giza does not necessarily mean you’re in the pyramids’ area; Giza is much bigger than that. 

Travelers often stay in either governorate and get around as if they’re in one big city. Where you choose to stay highly depends on your itinerary and trip goals. Are you here just to visit the pyramids, or are you hoping to properly explore Cairo? I’ll help you figure out where to stay in Cairo in the next section.

Where to Stay in Cairo: Understanding Neighborhoods

1. Al Haram

Al Haram, which actually translates to “the pyramid” in Arabic, is the Giza neighborhood where the Great Pyramids of Giza are located. It’s divided into smaller local areas such as Hadayek El Ahram and Nazlet El Semman, which is right in front of the Sphinx, famed for its horse stables and iconic rooftop restaurants. 

Personally, I don’t usually recommend staying there, especially to those who aren’t well-traveled. Nazlet El Semman specifically is not a ghetto in the Western sense, but it’s ghetto-like as it’s a form of informal urban settlement. So, I wouldn’t say it’s unsafe because the livelihoods of the people living there highly depend on tourism. But the hustle culture and chaotic environment can be a bit intense for some; it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Another reason why it’s not my first choice is that it’s only close to the pyramids, so if you’re planning on exploring Cairo, you’ll be spending a lot of time in traffic. 

Now you might be wondering: why even suggest staying there? Well, if you’re in Cairo for just 1 or 2 nights and the main purpose of your visit is to see the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then waking up to that view is absolutely worth it. My biggest tip would be to book your stay with the right expectations. 

• Vibe/Character: Chaotic, lively, and unapologetically authentic. Expect narrow streets, aggressive selling tactics, and lots of horses and camels. 
• Nearby attractions: The Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
• Transportation: Ride-hailing is your best option.
• Best for: Bucket-list travelers or photographers, primarily visiting for the pyramids.
• Best hotels in Al Haram: Marriott Mena House, Kove Hotel by the Pyramids, Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo, Galaxy Pyramids View Inn, and Gaia Pyramids Hotel.
• Solo travel score: 7/10

2. Downtown Cairo

This is hands down one of my top recommendations, especially for solo travelers and first-time visitors. Downtown Cairo is the city’s cultural heart, with grand 19th-century architecture and history in every nook and cranny. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s home to the old Egyptian Museum and the iconic Tahrir Square.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Cairo if you want an authentic view of the city, Downtown is vibrant, historic, and full of character. Disclaimer: It can be noisy and overwhelming, but that’s just part of its charm, to be honest.

• Vibe/Character: Historic, energetic, authentic, and a cultural hub.  
• Nearby attractions: Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square, Nile Corniche, Abdeen Palace, Cairo Tower, and Old Cairo.
• Transportation: Metro or ride-hailing apps.
• Best for: History buffs, budget travelers, solo travelers, and first-time visitors who want to cover as many attractions as they can. 
• Best hotels in Downtown: Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir Cairo, The Nile Ritz-Carlton, Mazeej Balad Boutique Hotel, Madina Hostel, and Dahab Hostel.
• Solo travel score: 8.5/10

3. Zamalek

If I had to recommend only one neighborhood, Zamalek would be it. It’s one of the best areas to stay in Cairo; it’s quite central as it’s located right across the Nile River from Downtown. Also, as a local, I can’t deny it’s one of my favorite places in the city. The upscale, cosmopolitan island is packed with trendy cafés, art galleries, bookstores, boutiques, embassies, and a whole lot of restaurants. Plus, it’s one of the very few places with green spaces; going for a walk in Zamalek is just a wonderful experience. 

• Vibe/Character: Lush, artsy, and cosmopolitan. 
• Nearby attractions: Cairo Tower, Nile Corniche, Cairo Opera House, the Egyptian Museum, and Downtown Cairo. 
• Transportation: Ride-hailing apps. 
• Best for: Solo travelers, digital nomads, foodies, and arts and culture lovers. 
• Best hotels in Zamalek: Sofitel El Gezirah, Cairo Marriott Hotel, Novotel Cairo El Borg, The President Hotel, and Longchamps Boutique Hotel.   
• Solo travel score: 9.5/10

4. Garden City

An often overlooked option is Garden City, one of Cairo’s most elegant neighborhoods. Just as the name suggests, it’s another of the city’s very few green neighborhoods. It’s home to embassies, historic villas, and luxury hotels with astonishing Nile views. It’s also located right next to Downtown Cairo, so it’s quite central, which makes exploring the city easy. 

But why stay there and not in Downtown or Zamalek? Best known for its quiet and much slower pace, Garden City is a great place to stay if you want proximity to attractions but would rather have peace of mind over the hustle and bustle of the city center. 

• Vibe/Character: Lush, quiet, elegant, and centrally located.
• Nearby attractions: Nile Corniche, the Egyptian Museum, and Cairo Tower. 
• Transportation: Ride-hailing apps.
• Best for: Luxury travelers and solo travelers looking for a quieter stay. 
• Best hotels in Garden City: Four Seasons Nile Plaza, Kempinski Nile Hotel, and InterContinental Cairo Semiramis. 
• Solo travel score: 9/10

5. Maadi

If you’re wondering where to stay in Cairo if you’re staying for a long period of time, Maadi is easily the best place to stay. And no, I’m not being biased because it’s my home base; the charming suburb, founded in the early 1900s, simply deserves it. 

The southern suburb is not geographically central like Downtown or Zamalek, but it’s still somehow centrally located. Downtown is 30 minutes away, New Cairo is 15 or 20 minutes away, and the Giza Necropolis is 30 minutes away, which in Cairo time is considered great. If you are a first-time visitor visiting for just a few days, you might want to stay somewhere more central, but if you’re staying for a longer time, Maadi would make the perfect base. It’s green, walkable, and best known for its international community, where you’ll feel right at home. 

• Vibe/Character: Lush, slow-paced, walkable, social, and cosmopolitan.
• Nearby attractions: Nile Corniche, Wadi Degla Protectorate, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. 
• Transportation: Metro or ride-hailing apps.
• Best for: Solo female travelers, digital nomads, and long-term visitors.

• In the city for 2-3 days? I’d choose Downtown and Zamalek over and over again, unless you’re staying for one night; then I think it’s worth waking up to the view of the pyramids.
• One month in Cairo? Hands down Maadi.
• Working remotely? Maadi or Zamalek.
• Returning visitor? Maybe New Cairo or Sheikh Zayed to explore the suburbs or different parts of the city that are non-touristy. 

Tips for Deciding Where to Stay in Cairo

1. Consider your itinerary first

One of the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make when deciding where to stay in Cairo is choosing their hotel before figuring out what they actually want to see or do. If seeing the Great Pyramids of Giza is your priority, then maybe staying nearby is worth it. On the other hand, if exploring Cairo is your main goal, then staying somewhere central like Downtown or Zamalek makes more sense. And if you want easy access to restaurants, cafés, and nightlife, then Zamalek is your best option.

2. Don’t underestimate Cairo’s traffic

A hotel may seem close to some attractions on the map, but Cairo’s brutal traffic can turn a short ride into a much longer journey. So, instead of focusing only on distance, consider how frequently you will be crossing the city. Choosing a place to stay that’s in close proximity to most points of interest will save you hours.

3. Decide between the local atmosphere and convenience

Some neighborhoods offer a more authentic glimpse into daily life in Cairo. On the other hand, other neighborhoods are much quieter, more modern, and better suited for international travelers. Think about what you prefer more: would you rather be surrounded by the bustling sounds of Cairo, or do you prefer a more polished environment with easier access to modern amenities?

4. Consider how much walking you plan on doing

Unlike many European destinations, Cairo is not really a walkable city. Aside from its vast size and how attractions are spread out, pavements are often inconsistent, and streets can be super busy. If being able to walk around is a priority, then maybe you should consider staying in a neighborhood like Zamalek or Maadi. 

5. Think about your preferred pace

Some neighborhoods are quite vibrant with a bustling environment, whether it’s day or not, while others are noticeably much calmer. If you prefer staying in the heart of the street action, then maybe Downtown or parts of Zamalek are for you. However, if you’d rather stay somewhere quieter, then maybe you should opt for places like Garden City or Maadi.

Airalo Review: My Experience With Airalo

I’ve been using Airalo on my solo trips for a little over 4 years now, and I’ve tested it in various destinations across Europe and the SWANA region. 

When I first downloaded the app, it didn’t take me long to figure out how it worked. Airalo’s interface is user-friendly, and the setup process is pretty straightforward. They even offered a step-by-step guide, as well as a video tutorial on the app that you can follow to easily install and activate your eSIM.

As a solo female traveler, reliability was an important factor, as I often needed to stay connected to the internet for safety and navigation. Most of the time, the coverage was absolutely amazing; sometimes even better than physical eSIMs. For instance, I had trouble topping up my physical SIM card in Jeddah, so downloading Airalo saved me big time. And in Dubai, downloading Airalo beforehand allowed me to actually use Facebook Messenger. 

The only time I faced any technical difficulties was during my trip to Portugal, but that was mainly due to two reasons. Some destinations don’t offer lots of network providers to eSIM companies, and that was the case at the time. Also, I was traveling to attend AfroNation, and given the enormous amount of travelers in The Algarve there at the time, the occasional network failures were inevitable. For complete transparency of this Airalo review, it’s worth mentioning that their tech support was pretty helpful but not super responsive at first. Other than that, the rest of my experiences in other destinations went smoothly.

Understanding Sahel: All About the North Coast, Egypt

First things first, what is Sahel?

Simply put, “Sahel” is short for “El Sahel El Shamaly”, which means “the North Coast” in Egyptian Arabic. 

As I mentioned earlier, the Mediterranean coastline stretches from Alexandria to Marsa Matrouh. For a little over 1,000 KM (650+ miles), gated communities line white-sand beaches, overlooking the clearest and bluest water you’ll ever see. Picture a gigantic summer playground, featuring trendy beach clubs by day and wild nightlife by night; except it’s spread across a vast collection of beach communities rather than a single town like Dahab or El Gouna. 

What makes this a truly hidden, yet not so hidden, gem is that the crowd is predominantly Egyptian. It’s not really considered a destination, but rather a summer lifestyle for the privileged, or a weekend escape from the big city’s hustle and bustle. 

Which takes us to 2 important points to discuss: when to visit and understanding the unique social culture of the North Coast, Egypt.

Best Time to Visit the North Coast, Egypt

Unlike other beach destinations in the country like Dahab or El Gouna, the North Coast, Egypt, is not a year-round destination; it operates only in the summer months. 

Peak season is from June to September, specifically when schools shut down and the official summer break starts, ending the season right before the Back to School week. So, for the full-on Sahel experience, for the beach clubs, the concerts, sporting events, and the whole shebang, this is when to visit. 

However, if you’re visiting during that time, you need to know that prices will be incredibly steep. So, the least you can do is book your stay a long time in advance to benefit from cheaper rates. 

Weather-wise, though, you could still visit a couple of weeks before or after the Sahel season begins and ends. Rates will be cheaper, but it’s also important to note that services may be less available. For example, some restaurants, gas stations, and other service providers may not be operating off-season. It is still doable, though; I just came back from Sahel literally a week ago. I spent the Eid vacation there, the weather was great, and enough services were available to get by. 

The “Good” and “Evil” Sahels Explained 

“Good Sahel” and “Evil Sahel” are terms that locals use to refer to 2 completely different parts (and sides) of the North Coast, Egypt. Personally, I hate using these terms as I think they’re classist as it can get. But sadly, classism is the form of discrimination you’ll notice the most in Egypt. It is, however, the best way I can try to convey the core essence of the unique Sahel culture. 

Understanding the difference between these 2 sides of the coastline is the key to understanding the social phenomenon that makes Sahel both loved yet also heavily criticized.

The first and simplest distinction is that Good Sahel is the old Sahel, closer to Alexandria and up until El Alamein, shortly after the Hammam toll gate. Evil Sahel is basically anything that comes after that. But the difference is way more than a geographical distinction; it’s an entire cultural contrast. 

The Good Sahel (el Sahel el tayyeb) is as simple as the good old days can get. Mornings feature swimming through the crashing waves, building sandcastles, snacking on Freska (an Egyptian beach-only wafer treat) or clams, and repeat. As for the traditional Good Sahel post-beach meal, it’s macaroni with red sauce and breaded chicken. Following this sunny day, and trying to wash the sand stuck all over your body, entertainment options are limited. You’ll either get together with your group and play board games or card games or head to the resort’s entertainment center, which often only comprises a pool table and a ping-pong table. 

On the other hand, Evil Sahel (el Sahel el shereer) is insanely different. For starters, their gated communities are 10X more exclusive. Sure, the norm in the North Coast, Egypt, is getting access to the resort if you have a reservation inside or if you’re a property owner or if you’re visiting someone who is. However, in the latter parts of Sahel, getting access to a gated community requires a QR code. And you often wouldn’t just stick to the resort or community where you’re accommodated; you’ll want to hang out in other places, so you’ll need QR codes for these places too. Yes, it’s that complicated. 

Honestly, this is why, personally, I hate planning a trip to Sahel. There, I said it. This is probably the only place in the entire world where I leave the booking process to my friends or family (depending on who I’m traveling with). I just hate the logistical hassle that comes with the exaggerated exclusivity. That’s partly the reason why I’m here to tell you all about it, so you won’t hate yourself during the planning process. 

With the exclusivity, you can safely assume that Evil Sahel can be more superficial, status-driven, and obviously, on the pricier end. People also dress differently; unlike throwing a pair of slippers and shorts on your swimsuit in the Good Sahel, Evil Sahel often requires traveling with an entire wardrobe. People “dress up” just to go to the beach club. 

Moving on to the hang-out spots, if you’re looking for promenades lined with cafés and restaurants, commercial areas, and a wild nightlife scene, Evil Sahel is your go-to. I’ll go more in-depth regarding this later on. 

Personally, I love both. I know I might have made the Evil Sahel sound so… evil, but I don’t think it makes you a bad person to want both kinds of fun. I’m both a party animal and a nature lover at heart. So, when I want to unwind, I’ll hit the older parts of the North Coast, Egypt, but when I want to venture out, party hard, and attend cool social or sporting events, the newer parts of Sahel are where I head.

Is the North Coast, Egypt, Worth Visiting?

In short, and generally speaking, yes, the North Coast, Egypt, is worth experiencing. If you’re visiting in the summer and you’ve already seen and done the basic first-time visitors’ Egypt bucket list, then Sahel is worth your time. There are pros and cons to consider, though, to know if this is the place for you. 

Pros

• Incredibly stunning beaches; some of the best in Egypt and the whole world, to be honest.
• Less touristy than the Red Sea.
• It’s a truly unique cultural experience that international travelers haven’t even scratched the surface of yet.

Cons

• It’s quite expensive.
• It’s seasonal; only doable if you’re traveling in the summer. 
• Difficult to explore without a car.
• If upscale experiences or nightlife aren’t your thing, it’s not for you.

The Geography: Where to Stay in the North Coast, Egypt

Areas Explained

As I mentioned before, the North Coast, Egypt, is not a single destination like other ones across the country. Non-Egyptians often get confused because everyone says things like Marassi, Hacienda, and Amwaj as if they’re towns; they’re not. 

Along the coastline, you’ll find a continuous chain of beach resorts/compounds and gated communities. Some are relatively small compounds with just a few hundred chalets, while others are enormous master-planned developments that come with endless facilities like marinas, hotels, shopping districts, beach clubs, even golf courses, and more. 

To make things a bit more interesting, locals sometimes don’t refer to specific compounds when giving directions, especially if they’re not famous enough. Instead, we use “kilos” (kilometers). For instance, we’d say something like “I’m staying at kilo 43”. These kilometer markers are borrowed from the Alexandria-Marsa Matrouh Coastal Road, locally known as “Sahel Road”, which serves as the backbone of the North Coast, Egypt. For years, this kilometer system was one of the easiest ways to identify locations along this vast stretch of coastline, especially the earlier parts. 

Another way to identify locations is by referring to the major region or district to which the compound belongs. Every few dozen kilometers, there’s a major district that serves as a geographical reference point and is also home to a bunch of compounds. 

• Old Sahel: Features smaller and quieter compounds like Sidi Kreir, Diplo 1 and 2, and El Ballah. 
• El Alamein: Home to the famed compound Marina, New Alamein City, and historical World War II sites.
• Sidi Abdelrahman: Home to some of the biggest developments, including Marassi, Hacienda, Amwaj, Telal, Diplo 3, and more. 
• El Dabaa: There are several newly opened developments there, such as D-Bay, SouthMed, and SeaZen. 
• Ras El Hekma: Home to popular compounds like Masyaf, Mountain View, Fouka Bay, and La Vista.
• Sidi Heneish: Known for one of the most pristine and less-developed stretches of the coastline, featuring only a few big developments like Almaza Bay.

The easiest way to think of the North Coast, Egypt, not as one destination, but as a collection of each community spread across an enormous coastline. Once you understand the kilometer marker system and the major districts, navigating Sahel instantly becomes much easier.

How & Where to Book Your Stay

Hotels in the North Coast, Egypt

If you prefer a hotel’s convenience, there are actually more hotel options than people often think. They’re usually in the pricier parts of Sahel. 

Here are some of the popular picks:

Renting a Chalet

This is what most locals often do when traveling to the North Coast, Egypt, for convenience and budgeting purposes. However, this might not be convenient, cost-wise, if you’re traveling alone. If you’re traveling with a group, though, this option might be worth considering. 

So, how do locals find a chalet to rent?

• We book through a known broker. If you make friends with Egyptians on your trip, it might come in handy to ask them for contacts if they have any. 
• Facebook groups all the way. There are lots of Facebook communities for things of that sort, such as “North Coast Buy & Rental Group” or “Whatsup For Sale Or Rent In Marina, Marassi, Hacienda, Amwaj North Coast”.
• Some properties are up for rent on platforms like Booking.com.

Transportation in the North Coast, Egypt 

Option #1: Car

The problem with Sahel is that it’s very difficult to get around without a car. So, your best options are either that you’re lucky enough to have an Egyptian friend to carpool with or that you rent your own car. 

For car rentals, I found the most affordable and competitive prices to be on Booking.com and Trip.com. They’re also the most trusted platforms out there, allowing you to rent cars from reputable companies like Avis, Sixt, and Hertz. Various cars are available for rent from Cairo International Airport via both platforms, and a 4-day rental can cost you around USD 100, depending on the model, of course. 

Aside from the cost of the rental itself, there are a few other expenses you need to consider:

• Gas (Prices have been fluctuating over the past few years, so make sure you check the current rate online before booking your trip).
• Tolls (That’s an insignificant amount–less than a dollar in total).
• Insurance/security deposit.
• Local taxes and VAT.
• Cost of extra mileage. Each deal offers different limited mileage, so it varies. 

PRO TIP: Rent your car through Booking.com, as I found that they offer limited mileage for up to 600-700 KM (373-435 miles). If you exceed that limit, you’ll pay USD 0.25 for every extra kilometer. So, if you’re traveling with the car, it’s best to rent one with the highest possible mileage offered.

There are also a few things you’ll need to provide to be able to rent a car in Egypt:

• Passport
• Driver’s license (to be provided by anyone who’ll be driving).
• Credit card in the main driver’s name to hold the security deposit.

Option #2: Take a bus there and use ride-hailing apps to get around

The alternative is to travel to the North Coast, Egypt, via bus; premium bus companies like Blue Bus and GoBus offer rides from Cairo to different stations across the coastline. 

As for getting around within Sahel, ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem do operate there in the peak summer season. However, it’s important to bear in mind that the number of cars available will not be the same as in Cairo, especially late at night. You might not even find a ride if you decide to stay up late partying, so it’s risky. Also, Sahel is much bigger than what first-time visitors normally expect. Some compounds are minutes away from one another, while others can be hours apart. That’s why depending on ride-hailing apps will limit you, especially if you want to explore the whole thing. 

Personally, I’d go for a car all the way. Sure, it feels like it comes with a lot of expenses, but if you manage to split the cost with other solo travelers you meet on your trip, or you’re traveling with others, it’ll be a win because convenience is highly crucial for a trip like this. 

Option #3: Fly there and use ride-hailing apps to get around

Another way to get to Sahel is to fly there through Al Alamein International Airport or Alexandria Borg El Arab Airport. Fly in directly from your homeland to Sahel, and once you arrive, either rent a car (only if you’re flying to Borg El Arab) or use ride-hailing apps like in the previous option. 

Best Beaches in North Coast, Egypt

As it’s already been established, the water in Sahel is unrivaled. The bright turquoise crystal clear water, the crashing waves, not to mention the love-hate relationship you develop with the white sand. It’s absolutely stunning all over, but some beaches just have to stand out.

Things to Do in the North Coast, Egypt

#1 Spend a slow day at the beach 

This one obviously goes without saying: just go to the beach and do beach things. Chill, read a book, throw ball with your friends and/or your furry friend, or unleash your inner child and build sandcastles. One thing I love to do? I like to color; I find it very therapeutic. 

#2 Or spice it up and attempt some water sports

Take beach things to another level, a tad more adventurous one. Popular beaches often feature various water activities like jet skiing, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, parasailing, or banana boat rides. What a lot of people don’t expect to find in Egypt, though, is surfing! Yes, there’s a surfing community in Egypt, and Sahel is their home. #3 Go to a beach club

Going to the beach is one thing, and going to a beach club is another. Going to a beach club in Sahel involves dressing to impress, lounging on chaises-longues, sipping on cocktails, listening to good music, and unleashing your inner social butterfly. Here are some of the locals’ favorite picks:

If water parks are your thing, look no further. Marassi is home to one of the biggest water parks in Egypt. From gigantic hydrofalls to the iconic Plunge ride, expect an adrenaline-fueled day at Marassi Water World. 

#5 Party like there’s no tomorrow 

This is one of the experiences that make Sahel so distinctive. The Sahel nightlife scene is one of the biggest in the country. From cozy beach parties featuring vinyl DJs to local superstars and international artists performing to thousands of party-goers, not to mention the raves that last till the next morning. 

Some of the artists I’ve personally seen perform live in the North Coast, Egypt include &Friends, Solomun, Notre Dame, and more. Other notable mentions include local sensations like Ruby, Ahmed Saad, Marwan Moussa, and Wegz, as well as international artists like JLo, Peggy Gou, Russ, Saint Levant, and NaÏka, to name a few. Now you probably have an idea of what kind of events to expect. 

How to find events in Sahel?

• Follow the venues and big developers on Instagram.
• Follow major party promoters like ByGanz or Venture Lifestyle’s P+US.
• Also, keep an eye on the Instagram account Sahel Nightlife for updates and announcements. 
• Check out ticketing platforms like TicketEgypt and TicketsMarché for events in Sahel.
• Keep an eye on Cairo’s favorite social events on Instagram to see if they’re heading to Sahel. Events like: Daybreak and Grill Setup‘s Bn’B by Grill Setup.

#6 Stay fit

Cairo’s biggest fitness gurus and gyms take off to Sahel in summer as well. Major developers often partner up with gyms, yoga and pilates instructors, and CrossFit coaches to set up shop at their compounds or for one-day sporting events.

#7 Dine out 

Food is an integral part of Egyptian culture; I say that over and over again. So, finding the best food in Sahel is guaranteed, be it Egyptian or endless choices of various international cuisines. I’ll be sharing my recommendations in a dedicated section below. 

#8 Then shop till you drop 

By now, we’ve already established that Cairo’s favorite brands all take off to Sahel in summer, and that also includes its favorite local fashion brands and concept stores. So, if you need a last-minute emergency fit, have a fashion disaster, or are simply craving some dopamine from retail therapy, you’ll find lots of commercial districts to your rescue. On top of my head, there’s Lakeyard in Hacienda Bay, Mporium in Marassi, The Village in Almaza Bay, and Ritsa in Masyaf Ras El Hekma.

P.S. Restaurants are café are available at these commercial districts as well. 

#9 Hit the arcades

You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the arcades; you just have to be young at heart. Marassi houses a massive entertainment center called The Hub that might just be what you’re looking for. Bowling, arcades, you name it. 

#10 And if you miss sightseeing, visit the World War II sites

You might be in Sahel, taking a break from sightseeing, but this is worth taking a break from the beach because it’s probably the last thing you’d expect to see in Egypt. 

Long before El Alamein became one of the hottest summer getaways, it was the site of 2 significant World War II battles: the First and Second Battles of El Alamein, fought back in 1942. 

Today, you can visit the El Alamein Military Museum, which boasts wartime vehicles, weapons, maps, and more artefacts. You can also visit the Commonwealth Cemetery, as well as the German and Italian war memorials. 

Where to Eat in Sahel

There are endless options within all budgets: fast food, mixed grills, and seafood restaurants, fancy schmancy dining experiences, you name it. Restaurants aren’t just inside compounds; you can find plenty on the Alexandria-Marsa Matrouh Road as well. A lot of Cairo and Alexandria’s F&B giants often set up shop in Sahel during the summer, and since you’re probably not familiar with their names, let me share some of my personal favorite places to eat and drink.

Is Sahel Solo Travel-Friendly?

Answering this question can be a bit tricky, because the answer can be both yes and no. 

You see, Sahel isn’t naturally for solo travelers. It’s built for groups: families, friends, and big social groups. Most Sahel-goers arrive with pre-existing groups and spend their whole vacation together. Also, access to venues can be a bit complicated, and when you’re traveling solo, you won’t necessarily always have the required network to help you navigate these logistics. Not to mention that accommodation in Sahel can be quite expensive, and staying on a budget often relies on groups splitting the costs.  

On the other hand, the North Coast, Egypt, can be a great solo travel experience. Generally, safety isn’t a concern; crime there is rare, compounds are usually heavily secured, and you’d be surrounded by families and vacationers. You also won’t be hassled like in major tourist destinations like Luxor; no one will try to sell you anything, which can be overwhelming to many travelers. 

Plus, we’ve already established that the beaches in Sahel are incredible. So, if your idea of the perfect solo trip includes riding the waves, reading by the beach, café hopping, and watching beautiful sunsets, then you won’t regret it. And last but not least, you’ll be experiencing a side of Egypt that foreigners rarely get to see. 

So my final verdict is that: yes, you can enjoy Sahel as a solo traveler, just maybe not in the traditional backpacker sense. 

I’d say Sahel is best suited to independent travelers looking for a glimpse into modern Egyptian summer culture, rather than a destination where meeting other travelers comes naturally. 

And frankly speaking, even in heavily sociable settings, if you’re an extrovert, you will absolutely survive. Let’s say you’re traveling solo, you want to experience the nightlife scene, but you’re afraid of going alone. Speaking from personal experience, as an ambivert, I did just fine, and I had a great time. There were times when I was staying at a close friend’s place, and she was working at major concerts, and I had to be left all alone sometimes. I ended up partying with complete strangers, and it was totally fine. One time, my friend came by to check on me, saw me with a couple, and she thought we were already friends. Plot twist: we weren’t; we’d just met. 

If you’re not a social butterfly, don’t be discouraged. It really doesn’t take one to survive. I still managed to mingle and socialize with people at times when I was really down and didn’t feel like socializing at all. Music, specifically, has this magical way of connecting people. I’ve even gone to music festivals abroad alone and survived, so you can too. 

Practical Tips for Foreigners

• Experiencing Sahel can be extremely difficult without a car. So, if you don’t befriend a local, I highly recommend renting a car. 
• If you do rent a car, drive carefully and try to familiarize yourself first during the day. From El Alamein onwards, a newer highway design replaces the old coastal road, with elevated U-turn bridges, two-way exit lanes, and complex merging points that require extra attention if you’re not used to it. 
• At night specifically, extra caution is advised, as you may encounter drivers traveling at high speeds or under the influence.
• Cash is king in Egypt. Beach clubs, stores, and restaurants will most likely offer POS machines for card payments, but you’d still need cash for emergencies, tipping, and toll gates. 
• Don’t expect free access to the beach. Some beaches are public, while others require entry fees, minimum spends, or membership-only access. 
• Distances are longer than they seem on the map. Plan extra time between spots and factor in crazy traffic if you’re hitting a popular club or going to a concert. 

Final Thoughts: Who Is Sahel For?

Now that I’ve broken down everything about the North Coast, Egypt, for you, it’s time to figure out whether or not it’s the destination for you. The answer to this question highly depends on 2 things: your travel interests and whether or not this is your first time in Egypt or if you’re staying in the country for long enough. 

If you’re looking for ancient temples and history, you should go to Luxor, Aswan, and Cairo. If you’re looking for diving and snorkeling, head to the Red Sea. However, if you’ve already seen and done it all and you want to experience how Egyptians spend their summers, there’s nowhere like Sahel. The turquoise Mediterranean waters, beach clubs, sunset dinners by the sea, and afterparties are unrivaled.

Locally known as Torino, and how I personally love to refer to it, Turin is the capital of the Piedmont region in Northwestern Italy. 

Bordering the North and West sides of the city are the famed snow-capped Alps, offering Torino a surreal skyline. Italy’s longest river, the Po River, also flows through Turin all the way to the Adriatic Sea in the East. 

Given Torino’s close proximity to the French and Swiss borders, the city’s not just a gateway to nearby Alpine escapes, but it’s also a drive away from various destinations.

Is Turin Worth Visiting: My Personal Experience There

When I first visited Turin, I hadn’t heard of it before. I had just finished my Erasmus experience in Rennes, France, and was visiting an old family friend in Grenoble. When she heard of my plan to travel around Italy afterwards, she suggested starting off with Turin, as it was just a 3-hour drive away, given both cities’ close proximity to the borders. 

Listening to her advice was a choice I definitely don’t regret. As soon as I got off my bus in Turin’s city center, I felt like I had arrived home. The unnecessary honking at the red traffic lights, the exaggerated Mediterranean hand gestures, and passing by Museo Egizio (the Egyptian Museum) all reminded me of home. The part that stood out the most was walking through the iconic portici (arcades) on my way to my hotel; I felt like taking a stroll in Korba back in Cairo.

As fascinated as I was, I can’t say I was really surprised. We have a saying here in Egypt that refers to Italians as “the Egyptians of Europe”. My visit to Turin, specifically, just confirmed this analogy. 

It’s worth mentioning that I visited Turin during Christmas, so my experience was slightly different than what you’d experience at any other time of the year. Some places were closed, especially because it’s a small city, but the Christmas magic made up for it. 

Top 7 Things to Do in Turin, Italy

Despite the city’s size in comparison to other Italian cities, there’s actually plenty to do in Turin. However, I understand that many travelers might want to cut their trip short to be able to travel around the rest of the country, especially if it’s their first time in Italy. So, whether you’re just going on a day trip to Turin or planning to stay for an entire weekend, these are the things I personally think you shouldn’t skip. 

#1 Walk around Piazza Castello

In my humble opinion, this pedestrian historic square is the perfect starting point to explore Turin. According to TripAdvisor, Piazza Castello is the beating heart of Turin.

Designed back in 1584, the square sits at the intersection of Torino’s key central streets, such as Via Roma and Via Garibaldi. As you walk around, you’ll find yourself surrounded by grand Baroque architecture and stunning royal palaces you just can’t skip. 

And if you happen to visit during Christmas time, as I did, this is most likely where the city’s Christmas market will be taking place. 

#2 Visit Palazzo Reale

When in Piazza Castello, you can’t help but notice the grandeur of the Royal Palace of Turin, known locally as Palazzo Reale. 

The 16th-century palace, which was later redesigned in Baroque style, served as the royal residence of the Savoy family, Italy’s former ruling family. As soon as you set foot in the palace, you’ll get to marvel at grand halls, lavish chandeliers, gilded ceilings, and ridiculously extravagant, yet marvelous interiors. So, if history and architecture are your cup of tea, this palace is definitely worth your time.

#3 Visit Palazzo Madama

Another wonderful palace standing in the middle of Piazza Castello is Palazzo Madama. Let me tell you, what makes this one truly fascinating is that different eras somehow come together under its roof. 

As you walk past the stunning Baroque facade, you’ll find yourself standing in the middle of Roman foundations, medieval towers, and centuries of different architectural styles. It’s safe to say that your visit will feel a lot like a ride in a time machine.

It’s also worth mentioning that the palace also houses the Civic Museum of Ancient Art, where you can view a wide variety of paintings, sculptures, ceramics, and more.

#4 Visit the Egyptian Museum 

I remember as soon as I arrived at my hotel, I asked the receptionist, “What’s the most important attraction here?” To my surprise, he immediately said: “il Museo Egizio”.

As an Egyptian, I was filled with mixed feelings. Turin was supposedly this city, rich in history, yet the most important attraction was a three-storey museum filled with artefacts from my homeland. Even the souvenirs sold on the streets were camels and pyramids! Part of me was proud, but I was also frustrated, especially because I had to pay €13 at the time (now it’s €18, and free of charge for Torino + Piemonte cardholders) to see my ancestors’ work of art.

To be honest, I’m a true believer in the right of the Egyptian government to retrieve its artefacts and monuments scattered around the world. However, until that hopefully happens, people should still be able to see it and appreciate it. So, if you still haven’t been to Egypt, the Egyptian Museum in Turin is worth a visit.

#5 Go to the National Museum of Cinema

Is Turin worth visiting without making a stop at the National Museum of Cinema, also known as Mole Antonelliana? Absolutely not! This is hands down my personal favorite attraction in Turin, and if you’re a cinephile like me or just a film buff, then you should definitely make time for it.

#6 Take in the panoramic views from above

The skyline of Torino, with the Alps as the backdrop and the Po River as part of its cityscape, is absolutely stunning. For marvelous views of the city, you need to marvel at it from an elevated point.

So, while you’re at the Mole Antonelliana, make sure to take the Panoramic Lift, or just head up Monte dei Cappuccini; the views there are free!

#7 Indulge in Italian chocolate

I was just in Geneva, Switzerland, right before my trip to Turin, and with all due respect to my Swiss readers out there, but Italian chocolate wins! 

As I mentioned earlier, Torino is considered Italy’s capital of chocolate, and it’s totally worth that kind of recognition. The chocolate truffles I bought from this random stall at the Christmas market were nothing like anything I had ever tasted before.

Is Turin worth visiting for more than a day? The answer to this question is subjective and varies depending on a traveler’s interests and time on hand. But whether you have to spend a night or more, you need a decent place to crash.

And if you ask me, it’s a great place to get to know Italy away from the hustle and bustle of bigger cities like Rome and the tourist crowds. So, is Turin worth visiting after all? Absolutely yes!

About the National Museum of Cinema

Turin’s iconic Mole Antonelliana is home to the National Museum of Cinema, locally known as Museo Nazionale del Cinema. This truly exceptional museum was inaugurated in July, 2000, quickly garnering worldwide recognition and becoming one of the most visited museums in Italy. 

What makes the National Museum of Cinema so special is the fun layout used to display its rich collections. The layout is developed in an upward spiral, displaying the history of cinema on multi-exhibition levels. The vast collections displayed feature posters, film equipment, film clips, memorabilia, and much more. And in today’s age and technology, the museum now offers an interactive multisensory experience via QR-coded access to multimedia content. 

National Museum of Cinema: Must-See Exhibits

The museum boasts a huge collection of rare and valuable materials; 2,200,000 works to be exact. Those works include films, photographs, equipment, film posters, archival documents, books, magazines, sound recordings, and much more. Three themes stand out in these collections: film archaeology, film history, and photography.

Throughout your visit, you’ll pass by multiple exhibits:

• Archaeology of Cinema floor: This is where the tour starts and where you can admire a valuable collection of equipment and materials that shaped cinema.
• Cinema Machine: This is an astonishing tour that showcases the main stages in the production of a film. Also featuring the world of special effects, as well as the language of cinema through props, sketches, costumes, scripts, photographs, and video projections. 
• Poster Gallery: Located on the upper floor, this gallery tells the history of cinema through a wonderful collection of film posters.
• Helicoidal Ramp: Temporary exhibitions are often held here.
• Temple Hall: Located at the heart of the Mole, special chaises longues are provided for visitors to watch screenings on the two available big screens.

Mole Antonelliana’s Panoramic Lift

The building that houses the museum, Mole Antonelliana, was initially a synagogue, turned into a monument of national unity and an architectural landmark of the city. Architect and visionary Alessandro Antonelli began work on the iconic building in 1863 and completed its construction in 1889. Sitting at a height of 167.5 meters, Mole Antonelliana was considered the tallest brick building in Europe at the time. 

The panoramic lift wasn’t introduced until 1961 during the celebrations of the centennial of Italian unification. Today, the lift allows the museum’s visitors to go all the way up to a terrace where they can take in breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Alps. 

P.S. This experience requires a separate ticket from the museum ticket, or a combined ticket that enables you to enjoy both.

National Museum of Cinema’s Location and Directions

The museum is located on Via Montebello, and the best way to get there is by using public transportation. You have multiple options:

• Bus 61, 55, 56, tram 13 and 15 (stop ROSSINI, via Po)
• Bus 68 (stop VERDI, via Rossini)
• Tram 16 (stop PALAZZO NUOVO, Corso San Maurizio)

National Museum of Cinema’s Opening Hours

• The museum and the panoramic lift are both open from Wednesday to Monday from 9 AM to 7 PM. 
• Tuesdays are off. 
• Holidays and special events may result in different working hours, so make sure to check this page in advance.

Ticket Prices

• Admission to the museum costs €18, a ticket for the panoramic lift costs €9, and the joint ticket for both costs €23. 
• Discounted tickets are available for travelers under the age of 26, costing €16, €7, and €20 consecutively. 
• Royal Pass holders are eligible for the museum and lift’s separate discounted tickets, and Torino+Piemonte Card holders are eligible for the lift’s discounted ticket. 
• Free admission for children at the age of 5 or younger, as well as people with disabilities and their companions. 
• Guided tours are available for big groups.
• To avoid long queues and waiting times, it’s best to purchase your ticket online. If you’re a solo traveler and would like to visit with a guide, you can book a tour online and join an existing group.

• The National Museum of Cinema is accessible to people with disabilities, offering ramps, elevators, and even free of charge wheelchairs available at the ticket counter.
• A free audio guide is available in English and Italian; all you have to do is scan the QR code at the entrance. 
• There’s no cafeteria in the museum; however, there are vending machines for snacks and drinks on the ground floor.
• There’s also a gift shop, featuring a wide selection of relevant books, gadgets, and souvenirs.
• Toilets are available on site. 

Things to Know in Advance

• The visit usually lasts from 1.5 to 2 hours.
• Photography and videography for personal use are allowed, but flash photography is not allowed on certain floors.
• If you happen to be traveling with your dog, they’re allowed on the ground floor as long as they’re muzzled and on-leash. Small dogs are allowed throughout the museum as long as they’re held in arms or in carrier bags. As for service dogs and certified emotional support animals, they’re permitted with no restrictions. 
• Large bags are not allowed inside the museum; you’ll have to leave them at the entrance. 
• There are bike racks near the museum if you’re commuting via bicycle. 

Events and Special Programs at the National Museum of Cinema

The National Museum of Cinema often organizes and hosts temporary exhibitions within its spaces, the Temple Hall and the Helicoidal Ramp. Make sure you check out the museum’s official Instagram page before your visit to keep an eye out for events. 

It’s worth recognizing the National Museum of Cinema’s efforts in the restoration of films, often believed to be irretrievably lost. Many of these initiatives have been in collaboration with other prestigious institutions from around the world. The museum’s cutting-edge research on the preservation of cinematic materials has placed it at the center of cultural initiatives in Italy and beyond.

International acclaim of the museum doesn’t stop here. The National Museum of Cinema is connected to 3 major film festivals of global recognition: Torino Film Festival, Festival CinemAmbiente, and Lovers Film Festival. My Experience at the National Museum of Cinema

To give you a little brief about myself, in case you’re new here, I majored in Media Management when I was in university. I was such a film buff (still am), and by the time I was graduating, I wanted to be a film director. That didn’t end up happening because the hours weren’t going to allow me to pursue my dream of becoming a full-time travel blogger, and honestly, I wanted to travel more. So, here I am. I did end up working on organizing film festivals on the side, though. 

Anyhow, this can help you imagine how much someone like me would enjoy visiting the National Museum of Cinema in Turin. I was still a student at the time, and I was in awe throughout my whole visit. I remember walking through the museum being totally overwhelming but in the best way possible. All the behind-the-scenes details that make cinema feel as magical as it is have left me fascinated.

I won’t deny, reminiscing and writing about my experience right now almost feels bittersweet for someone who once dreamed of becoming a filmmaker. It feels like connecting with a younger version of myself, but I don’t regret a thing, to be honest. Remembering the layout of the museum, specifically, because it’s set up in a way that actually tells a story, reminds me of why I fell in love with storytelling in the first place. I’ve been a storyteller ever since I was just a little girl, when I used to write short stories and silly poems about friendship and dreaming big. Sure, my path may have ended up looking different from that version of myself who visited the museum had dreamed of. However, storytelling remains at the center of everything I do now, just through travel, writing, and content creation.

Moving on to one of the most important questions: Which Parisian neighborhoods are especially lively on Fête de la Musique?

Lots of events take place in the summer, be it concerts, sports events, or other festivals. So, make sure you look up other events happening in Paris or nearby destinations during your trip to make the most of your time.

June in Paris is mostly sunny, so include summery outdoor activities in your itinerary. Visit a local French market, check out a wide range of fresh fruits and cheeses, and enjoy a Parisian picnic experience. Be it at one of Paris’s many beautiful parks or on the banks of the Seine. Just don’t forget to make a stop at the boulangerie to bring along a freshly baked baguette or croissants.

My Fête de la Musique Experience

My first Fête de la Musique was insane; in fact, it was one of my most memorable travel experiences and one of the main reasons why I made amends with Paris. 

So, my OG readers and followers know that a decade ago, I spent a semester in Rennes, France, so I’ve already been to Paris before then. Unfortunately, Paris didn’t live up to my expectations at the time and ended up being a huge disappointment. Let’s be honest, Paris is one of those destinations that are so heavily promoted to the extent that it forms unrealistic expectations for its visitors. I was personally able to make amends with the City of Love when I decided to experience it as a traveler and not a tourist, and just go with the flow. Fête de la Musique 2023 was the first stepping stone in this incredible journey.

To be quite honest, I first stumbled upon Fête de la Musique by pure coincidence. That specific visit to Paris wasn’t really Paris-focused. I was in Europe during that time to attend AfroNation music festival, and I just made a stop in Paris the week before, mainly to attend a dance class with one of my favorite choreographers of all time! Yes, I basically went to Paris to attend a dance class! In case you were wondering, it was epic. 

Anyhow, the day I arrived in Paris was the 21st of June, Curls en Route’s blog-aversary, and coincidentally Fête de la Musique. After a power nap and lunch at my hostel, I headed out to the streets of Paris, and my plan was: TO HAVE NO PLAN. I decided to just walk aimlessly and wing it.

My feet led me to the Montmartre area, and as I marveled at the Sacré Coeur Cathedral, my ears led me somewhere else. The OGs here would also know that I’m a sucker for live music, and I’d often randomly follow the music on my trips and end up at wonderful places. This is exactly what happened. I ended up watching a super cool show by a marching band, and that was when I realized what was happening. 

The music then led me to party number 1 at Benelum bar, which was fire! At one point, the entire street turned into a dance floor; EDM and hip-hop mashups blasting, including unexpected techno remixes of hip-hop legends like Kendrick Lamar. Above that scene, neighbors leaned out of their windows, vibing; even senior citizens and pets joined the party. 

I hated to leave that party, but I had to make a trip to a nearby supermarché for a bottle of water; responsible partying requires hydration! As I made my way there, I couldn’t help but hear a tabla, a familiar sound that reminded me of home! This sound led to a Lebanese restaurant, called Chez Zena, and suddenly, for a second there, I felt like I wasn’t in Montmartre anymore and that I had teleported to Mar Mikhael in Beirut!

As an Egyptian, vibing to Arabic, and mostly Egyptian Arabic music, in Paris was irresistible. I didn’t leave and stuck around till the end of the night. It was not just the perfect start of my trip, but also a major sign from the universe. You see, I shot a video there, and it went super viral, and the story behind it was even more special!

The Story of How I Went Viral in Paris

This wasn’t just a viral video; it was more.

For context, let’s go back to the last quarter of 2022. If you’ve been following me on Instagram back then, you probably know I was in Jeddah for 2 months because I was hired to work on a project there. And if you’ve been following closely, then you know it was taking a toll on my mental health even though I was trying hard not to show it. 

One day, I woke up, and out of nowhere, I decided to play the song (the one in the viral video) every single morning to set a positive intention for my day. For the non-Arabic speakers here, “Eh el youm el helw da”, the name of the song, means “oh what a beautiful day.” It turned into an inside joke even with friends and colleagues, but I actually believed in my own joke. I took that silly joke so damn seriously that I even put it on sticky notes on my desk and bedroom mirror. I firmly believed that my good thoughts could attract “good things”. Whenever I felt down or whenever I needed to feel good at the beginning of a day, I played the song. 

Fast-forward to mid-2023, June 21st, the 5th anniversary of my blog. It’s my first day in Paris, a city, and I wind up at a Lebanese restaurant, and of all the Egyptian songs they played, I was so excited when they played this one.

That whole moment was surreal, so I obviously had to document it. For me, before anyone or anything else. That day, I filmed a lot of videos that I knew were content-worthy, but I had to post this one; it seemed like my good luck charm, and it was!

I knew exactly what I was doing when I was uploading this video; I’m not gonna lie. I knew it had the tendency to blow up and was uploading it with that intention. To be honest, though, I would’ve never thought it would blow up to that extent! I mean, just 4 days into my trip, that reel had garnered half a million views, and by the end of the trip, it had reached 1.3 million views. Today, it has 1.6 million views; I’m still in disbelief.

So after this long story, I guess what I’ve been trying to say is that I felt this was a sign from the universe to keep going. To keep doing what I do. Being a full-time creator is not easy; this road is often paved with lots of moments of discouragement. Building my blog has always made sense, and the work I put in it was always rewarding with tangible results. But on the other hand, building social media presence was always burning me out; it still is. Even if you do everything by the book, it doesn’t always reap the results you’ve been working hard for. And that alone can be very frustrating.

To be honest, I was never looking for vanity metrics or virality. I’ve actually worked in content long enough, in my pre-blogging 9-5 days, to know what’s guaranteed to go viral. There were things that I knew I could do, and blowing up was guaranteed, but I never did those things because I didn’t want to change my voice, that’s 1, and 2 is that virality isn’t always a good thing because it doesn’t bring in your target audience. And to me, that was way more important. But still, this moment of encouragement was the validation I needed at the time. We still need signs like that from time to time.

What’s Next?

So, if you ever find yourself in Paris on June 21st, all you have to do is follow the music. Don’t overthink it; this is what Fête de la Musique is all about. Just an entire city coming alive and people from different backgrounds all coming together in the most spectacular way possible.

Especially because it’s not a creator-focused event; it’s more of a B2B experience. That’s why I’m here to tell you how to make the most of your Arabian Travel Market experience in case you’re a fellow travel creator attending for the first time.

About Arabian Travel Market

Arabian Travel Market (ATM) is one of the leading international travel and tourism events, held annually in Dubai. It brings together travel professionals, government officials, media outlets, and influencers to showcase travel trends, destinations, and tourism products from around the world. 

ATM is part of the global sister event, World Travel Market (WTM). However, unlike WTM London, which is rather global, ATM is specifically tailored to the MENA region. 

P.S. The event usually takes place in Spring, but due to geopolitical events, the 2026 edition has been postponed to take place in September. Make sure you keep an eye on ATM’s official website for any further changes, as this is the second time the event has been postponed this year.

Is Arabian Travel Market Worth It for Creators?

I won’t deny it; most people were surprised by my presence as a creator, and not just a business owner (my blog is registered as an LTD). After all, it’s a trade show, and there’s a lot of B2B action that takes place there. But that doesn’t mean Arabian Travel Market can’t be a fruitful experience for you as a travel creator.

Attending the Arabian Travel Market is absolutely worth it for you as a creator if:

• You’re ready to pitch yourself and put yourself out there
• You’re looking to land brand partnerships
• You’re positioning yourself professionally, as a personal brand and not just a creator.

On the other hand, if you’re just going to create content, you don’t plan your visit around talking to as many brands and industry professionals as possible, and if you don’t follow up and nurture your connections, you might want to skip this event and save your money. 

How to Register as a Creator

As a travel blogger, I was eligible to apply for a media badge. For media registration, you need to qualify as a publisher, editor, journalist, broadcaster, photographer, or blogger, like yours truly. 

It’s a pretty straightforward process; you simply go to the official ATM website, fill out an application for free, and if you get accepted, you will receive your accreditation details.

How to Prepare for Arabian Travel Market

#1 Determine your goals

The first question you need to ask yourself is: what do you want out of this experience?

• Collaborations?
• Press trips?
• Networking?
• Landing freelance gigs?

As soon as you get clear on your goals, everything else will fall into place.

#2 Research exhibitors in advance

I spent hours and days doing this, because new exhibitors will keep joining the platform. So, make sure you keep revisiting this. Depending on the goals you’ve determined in the first step, you should be able to figure out what kind of exhibitors and attendees you want to connect with: tourism boards, hotels, DMCs, travel publications, tour operators, etc.

#3 Book meetings

Using the ATM Meet, the official meetings platform for the event, you can easily pre-arrange your calendar and plan your days. 

Once you figure out who you want to be meeting with, send them a meeting invite and make sure to write a compelling message, briefly introducing yourself and why you want to connect. 

Be strategic with your invites as you’ll have a limited number of those. If someone declines your invite, it should be added back to your credit. 

Don’t forget to take a look at the program of panel discussions and talks, and factor that in while putting your schedule together. If there’s a talk you’re interested in attending, then make sure the meetings you book before or after are nearby on the site map and you have enough time to walk from point A to B. One thing I did that was helpful was to block 30-minute slots before and after every meeting I had confirmed. This gave me enough time to get from one place to another, prep for meetings, or take a coffee break. 

You will most likely receive meeting invites as well. If you’re not interested in meeting with the person who invited you, make sure you decline, rather than leaving them on hold. This way, their invite credits wouldn’t go to waste, and they can still use them.

#4 Prepare your pitch

Now it’s time to work on your big pitch. You might have to make a few tweaks depending on who you’re meeting with. For instance, my pitch to tourism boards and operators was completely different from my pitch to travel publications. Every pitch should be tailored to what the other party is likely looking for. However, there are a few staples that should be included in your pitch anyway. 

Here’s what to include:

• A brief fun introduction: who you are + what you do + what you offer
• Stats and demographics (In my case, I included that for both the blog and social media. I also squeezed in a few screenshots of how Curls en Route ranked on Google for multiple blog posts.)
• Services and detailed offerings. e.g., UGC, press trips, sponsored content, affiliate marketing, etc…
• Include examples of previous work if possible.
• Contact information

Make sure to leave time for brainstorming, exchanging ideas, and receiving feedback.

P.S. You might have to make updates to your pitch during the event. For instance, I hit a traffic milestone that I needed to reflect in my stats slide. You might also want to make some improvements along the way.

Here are a few tips to make sure your pitch stands out:

• Incorporate your personal branding. For example, in my case, I used Curls en Route’s branding (fonts, color palette, logo, etc.)
• Make it visually appealing by including photos, screenshots, or infographics.
• Include brief bullet points to act as reminders for what to say instead of just reading paragraphs or long sentences off a screen. 
• And of course, practice in advance so your pitch comes off naturally. Don’t forget to time it as well, so you don’t lose track of time during the actual meeting.

What to Do at Arabian Travel Market (Gameplan)

Day Strategy:

As soon as you arrive on the first day, make sure you familiarize yourself with the floor plan and the venue. The venue (The Dubai World Trade Center) is huge, but don’t worry, you’ll get the hang of it by the first day. 

Each night, take time to prep for the following day by going through your pitch and maybe prepping some specifics for each meeting. For example, you might want to look at the other party’s most recent work updates, the contact person’s LinkedIn profile, and so on. 

My biggest tip? Walk the floor with intention, approach booths and pavilions confidently, and just start conversations without overthinking it. You might feel a bit anxious at first, but trust me, after a couple of meetings, the words will start rolling off your tongue so naturally, and confidence will automatically become your middle name. 

Aside from pre-scheduled meetings, make sure you leave time to walk the floor and network with industry professionals. This landed me several impromptu meetings, even unintentionally. I remember on my last day, I was supposed to have 4 meetings, and ended up having 9! One of these happened when an Egyptian entrepreneur overheard me sending a voice note in Egyptian Arabic to a peer in the corner. He came up and said hi, and the rest is history. 

What to Say:

Achieving the right balance between professionalism and casual is tricky. You’re a creator, not a salesperson, so you want to keep it casual and light. But you also want people to take you seriously, because you’re a professional just like them, and not just an amateur. 

I found that the key is simply being human and staying true to yourself. The rest will follow.

What to Collect:

Don’t just collect brochures and other promotional materials. You want direct contacts and those of the right people. Collect emails, WhatsApp numbers, and/or LinkedIn profiles. If the right contact person is there on-site, introduce yourself and have a direct link before exchanging contact information. Also, don’t solely rely on the event’s Colleqt app; it’s not that reliable.

Practical Tips

Arabian Travel Market Tips

• Download the Arabian Travel Market mobile app! This way, you can easily access the floor map, schedule, chats, and everything event-related from your phone.
• Don’t book meetings in the first hour of the event. The venue is huge, and to be honest, the organization wasn’t the best, as volunteers at the info desk lacked info. So, you’re going to need at least an hour to familiarize yourself with the venue, get the hang of the floor map, and claim your lanyard.
• Don’t forget to print your badge at home, as there are no printing facilities available.
• Block 30 minutes between your meetings and panels. Luckily, I did this because I wasn’t sure about the realistic distance between booths, and also to have breaks, and it ended up being a great idea. It was also useful as I squeezed in impromptu meetings on the spot with people I met there.
• Be very strategic with your invite credits. Unfortunately, not everyone who books meetings or accepts invites puts in the time and effort to review who they’re meeting with. So, you might end up meeting with someone who’s not as interested in the collaboration opportunity as much as you.
• Expect no-shows and last-minute cancellations, and don’t take it personally. Not everyone is professional. 
• Dedicate some of your free time to passing by booths you might be interested in. It’s a great way to exchange contacts and potentially set up impromptu meetings.

• Physical business cards still count. I made the mistake of relying on the event’s Colleqt app and digital business card I created in advance, which was also generated via a QR code. However, the Colleqt app didn’t always work, and the older professionals preferred physical over digital. Also, some booths had bowls placed for people to drop their business cards; it was helpful in case the right contact person wasn’t available on site.
• The edition I attended featured an influencers’ networking event, which required applying in advance and was only available for media badge holders. If something like that is made available once again, I highly recommend you attend, as it was a great networking opportunity for both creators and brands looking to connect with them.
• Share with your online community and network that you’ll be in Dubai and attending the event in advance (via social media and LinkedIn). You’ll land more networking inquiries in your inbox.

Travel Tips

• The best way to commute to and from the event is the metro. Traffic in Dubai has become more insane since my previous visit, and it gets much worse because of the Arabian Travel Market. So, instead of prioritizing proximity to the venue when booking accommodation, it’s best to book a place that’s right next to a metro station. Especially because Uber rides were impossible to find after the event, and in the morning, the surge was incredibly high.
• Don’t waste time pitching to hotels in Dubai during your visit to Arabian Travel Market. As creators, we often try to hit two birds with a stone and land a hotel collab to save on accommodation in Dubai, which can be quite expensive. Based on experience, you most likely won’t land a hotel collab when there’s a big event happening in Dubai due to high demand. The best deal you can land sometimes is a media rate. So, if that’s not possible, I highly recommend you book in advance and don’t waste time. 
• Hostels in Dubai are absolutely horrible. I know if you’re on a budget, especially at such a pricey destination like Dubai, you’ll be more inclined to book a hostel, but trust me, the cons are not worth it at all. This topic deserves a whole other blog post, so maybe I can write about that later. In the meantime, when in Dubai, do yourself a favor and book a hotel.
• Speaking of bookings, I highly recommend you book your flight to Dubai as soon as you get your application accepted. The later you book, the more expensive flights should be, especially with such a big event coming up. You can learn more about finding good deals on flights here.
• Make sure to install your international eSIM before you land. On my last visit to Dubai, I found out by coincidence that most international eSIMs are no longer supported, just local ones. What to Wear at Arabian Travel Market

• The dress code for the event is business attire; think dress pants, blazers, formal sets, etc… 
• Ladies, forget about heels and wear comfortable shoes instead. You’ll be making thousands of steps each day. 
• Dubai is an incredibly hot city, but the venue is air-conditioned. So, make sure you take this into consideration when packing. 
• Bring a tote bag! You need something where you can fit a tablet or laptop to present your pitches, your notebook/planner, and throw in any promotional material you pick up.

Final Thoughts

Last but not least, if you leave Arabian Travel Market without closing a single deal, don’t be discouraged! That’s not a failure; that’s actually the norm. These events aren’t where deals are closed; it’s where they begin. 

What matters the most are the seeds you plant during the event: the connections you make, the conversations you start, and the doors you open for future partnerships. Most opportunities don’t happen overnight, or on the spot; they sometimes take weeks, months, or even more. A single follow-up email or reminder can be enough, and sometimes you need more. People get busy, their priorities change, and sometimes goals aren’t aligned at a specific point in time, but align later on, and that’s okay. 

So, don’t take it personally and don’t measure your success with what you walk away with, but rather with what you build from it later on.

What Are “Arrondissements”?

Paris consists of 20 administrative districts, locally known as “arrondissements”. The territorial division of the capital of France dates back to the French Revolution, whereas the city was first divided into 12 districts in 1795, and later, in 1860, the authorities incorporated part of the suburbs and added 8 more arrondissements. 

If you look at a map, you’ll notice that the Parisian arrondissements take the shape of a clockwise spiral that starts with the 1st arrondissement from the center.

Where to Stay in Paris: The Safest Arrondissements for Solo Travelers

In spite of its major popularity, safety in Paris is nuanced. However, like I previously mentioned in my Paris safety guide, I don’t like to label destinations, especially when it comes to safety. Simply put, by taking the right precautions and doing enough research, you can travel alone safely almost anywhere. That said, learning about arrondissements is essential for deciding where to stay in Paris.

PRO TIP: Where you stay can shape your Parisian experience, but what you do in each neighborhood is just as important. One of the best ways to immerse yourself in an arrondissement is through booking an Airbnb Experience. Be it a photography walk, a culinary experience, or a pub crawl, this is such a great way to explore beyond the typical tourist spots while meeting other solo travelers and locals along the way.

1st Arrondissement

Given the clockwise spiral map of Paris, the 1st arrondissement is quite central, making it very close to a lot of the major attractions. This also means that it’s one of the most heavily patrolled areas in the city, as it’s usually packed with tourists. 

• Vibe/Character: Touristy, historical, central.
• Attractions: Louvre Museum, Jardin des Tuileries, and Pont Neuf.
• Transportation: Metro lines 1, 4, 7, 11, and 14.
• Why it’s great for solo travelers: Proximity to major attractions and extra security.

Crime rate is also very low; however, you’d want to keep an eye out for petty theft near tourist attractions. It is worth mentioning that it might be too pricey if you’re on a budget, which can be quite common amongst solo travelers.

• Vibe/Character: Upscale, peaceful.
• Attractions: Jardin du Luxembourg, Saint-Germain-des-Prés historic neighborhood, and Pont des Arts.
• Transportation: Metro lines 4, 10, and 12.
• Why it’s great for solo travelers: Safety.

3rd & 4th Arrondissements (Le Marais)

Le Marais, located in both the 3rd and 4th arrondissements, is one of the most beautiful historic neighborhoods in Paris. It was once a marshland, turned Jewish Quarter, and now an artsy hub, bustling with boutiques, cafés, and art galleries. The foot traffic and its LGBTQ-friendliness make it one of the safest neighborhoods in the city. So, if you’re a solo traveler wondering where to stay in Paris, Le Marais is hands down one of the best choices.

• Vibe/Character: Artsy, trendy, historic charm, central.
• Attractions: Notre-Dame Cathedral (4th arrondissement but not in Le Marais), Place des Vosges, Picasso Museum, and Rue Vieille du Temple.
• Transportation: Metro lines 1, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 14 
• Why it’s great for solo travelers: Safety, central location, and variety of activities.

5th Arrondissement (Latin Quarter)

The Latin Quarter, located in the 5th and 6th arrondissements, is another historic neighborhood. With bookstores on every corner and being home to the famed Sorbonne University, this is the intellectual hub of the city. The student-heavy vibes make this a lovely neighborhood to hang out at, at bohemian cafés during the day and at jazz clubs at night. 

• Vibe/Character: Intellectual, bohemian, nightlife.
• Attractions: Panthéon, Fontaine Saint-Michel, and the world-famous bookstore Shakespeare and Company.
• Transportation: Metro lines 4 and 10.
• Why it’s great for solo travelers: Lots of solo-friendly activities.

The 7th arrondissement is home to iconic landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Champ de Mars Park. It’s an upscale, aristocratic neighborhood, so it’s one of the quiet and safe ones in the capital. However, it goes without saying that the Eiffel Tower area, in particular, can be full of pickpockets, so it’s important to remain cautious. And of course, given that the Eiffel Tower view is priceless, expect accommodations to be on the expensive side.

14th Arrondissement

This one’s mostly a residential area, but given its peaceful atmosphere and incredibly low crime rate, it’s a great option to consider when thinking about where to stay in Paris. 

• Vibe/Character: Residential, peaceful.
• Attractions: Catacombs of Paris, Rue Daguerre (shopping and dining), and the Vanves Flea Market. 
• Transportation: Metro lines 4, 6, 13, and 14.
• Why it’s great for solo travelers: Safety.

8th Arrondissement

Home to the world-famous Champs-Élysées, it’s generally considered very safe due to heavy patrolling. However, petty theft is still common in touristy spots, so vigilance is crucial. 

• Vibe/Character: Luxurious, popular.
• Attractions: Champs-Élysées, Arc de Triomphe, Place de la Concorde.
• Transportation: Metro lines 1, 2, 6, 8, 9,12,13, and 14.
• Why it’s great for solo travelers: Safety and proximity to major attractions.

16th Arrondissement

Another one of the safest, most affluent, and peaceful areas in Paris. But given that it’s also a residential area, it might be too quiet for activities. Also, it might not be on the affordable end for solo travelers as it’s quite an upscale area. 

• Vibe/Character: Upscale, quiet, residential.
• Attractions: Trocadéro Gardens & Palais de Chaillot.
• Transportation: Metro lines 1, 2, 6, 9, and 10.

Arrondissements That May Not Be Ideal for First-Time Solo Travelers

Like I said earlier, staying safe in Paris requires vigilance. That’s why some areas may not be for first-time solo travelers, and I may advise against other areas when deciding where to stay in Paris.

If you’re not well-traveled, areas around major train stations, such as Gare du Nord or Gare de l’Est in the 10th arrondissement, may feel less safe. The main downside of this area is that it’s usually packed with tourists, often in a hurry, making them easy prey to pickpockets. However, based on personal experience, as I’ve stayed there multiple times, I never felt unsafe as long as I stayed vigilant. I’ve stayed at both Generator Paris and St. Christopher’s Inn and had a great experience at both. So, if you’re a frequent solo traveler like me, don’t hesitate to stay there.

Another area where I’d be careful would be Châtelet-Les Halles. Even though it’s located in the 1st arrondissement, which is generally safe, the super busy shopping hub during the day isn’t the same after dark. It often attracts groups of loiterers, so it might make you feel uncomfortable, especially if you’re a solo female traveler.

On the other hand, there are some areas where I recommend you avoid while deciding where to stay in Paris. These include some parts of the 18th and 19th arrondissements, such as La Chapelle, which has lower evening foot traffic and attracts more petty thieves, and Pigalle, which is basically the red-light district of Paris. Also, try to avoid Barbès-Rochechouart, which is at the intersection of the 9th, 10th, and 18th arrondissements, as drug trade can be quite common there at night.

Additionally, I’d avoid suburbs, in general, especially the northern ones. Areas like Saint-Denis and Aubervilliers are known for street crime. If I were you, I’d opt for staying in central Paris instead.

Tips for Deciding Where to Stay in Paris

Aside from safety, which should be your top priority as a solo traveler, there are a bunch of other aspects you should consider when booking your stay in Paris. So, I put together a list of useful tips to help you decide where to stay in Paris–don’t let these things slip your mind!

• Consider your travel style: Are you a foodie, culture lover, or party animal? Your travel priorities will help you figure out which accommodations fall within your budget.
  
• Check proximity to public transportation: Consider arrondissements with metro lines that are well-connected to the rest of the city. Then prioritize stays within walking distance from the nearest metro station, preferably, or bus stop.
  
• Balance cost VS. safety VS. vibe: Consider all 3 aspects, weigh down your options, and try to book an accommodation that offers the perfect balance. 

Conclusion

Overall, Paris is a bucket list destination that’s absolutely worth visiting, even more than once. And it’s not just for the Eiffel Tower and Louvre; Paris has so much more to offer! So, don’t be discouraged from visiting. You can definitely stay safe in Paris as a solo traveler by staying vigilant and taking the right precautions.
