If you safely landed on this page, then you’re probably just like me, a wandering soul who’s constantly bitten by the travel bug. Sometimes we’re immersed in our daily routine and we often get distracted, but other times, we’re unlucky enough we start itching all over again. We cannot really control our constant desire to get back on the road. Hardcore travelers are always thirsty for more and we just cannot help it. But how can we get over the travel bug?

How to know you’ve been bitten by the travel bug?

Do you find yourself lingering for the state of euphoria you delve in whenever you go somewhere new where you don’t know anyone? Do you miss exploring, socializing with locals and other travelers, trying new cuisines, or immersing yourself in a foreign culture? Then, you’ve been probably bitten by the travel bug, my friend. And only someone like you and I will get this feeling and understand how serious it could get.

How to get over the travel bug?

Unfortunately, life throws some obstacles and limitations in our way; whether financial limitations or basic responsibilities back home. That’s why, most probably, you’re constantly in the search for an answer to this question: how to get over the travel bug? The truth is, you never really do.

I’m sorry to break it to you, but no matter how hard you try to distract yourself, there comes a point when it stops working out. You’ll keep looking for answers and you’ll stumble upon guidelines on how to do it, but based on my personal experience, this is complete nonsense. I’ve come to realize that once you start, you cannot stop. Once you’re bitten, you become a travel junkie, for good!

Unlike normal addiction, travel addiction has no cure. There’s only one way to keep going, which is to satisfy your need. Unfortunately, not everyone is that lucky. Reality check: lack of funds, family, full-time jobs, you name it.

So, what can you do about that?

My advice is to bust your a** at work, get some freelance work done if your work-life enables you, and save money! Travel abroad every once in a while, if you can, and if not, you can always explore your own country. This should do the trick and buy you some time.

Meanwhile, you need to work on the financial aspect because normally this is the biggest obstacle of all. As I said, try to increase your income and lower your expenses. In other words, prioritize! I’ve reached a point where I don’t feel like spending on certain things because I feel like spending it on traveling instead. However, don’t get lost in this work dilemma and remember to always reward yourself from time to time.

But how not to lose patience?

This saving period could be very tricky. The longer it is, the harder the travel bug gets. People’s circumstances are not the same; someone might take a few months to save for a trip, when it could take up to a year or even more for another. Some of us have more flexibility when it comes to days off, and others just don’t. So, how can you maintain your patience instead of letting the bug get to you?

For me, the answer is to have a motive, or something to look forward to. In other words, always plan for your next trip. Setting your eyes on a future goal will take your focus away from the present and its distractions. It will also encourage you to work harder towards it.

Decide what’s your next destination is going to be; maybe you could find some inspiration on Pinterest. Then, do some research and figure out the budget you’ll need. This way, you’ll have a target figure and will now how much you need to save for this trip. But you need a deadline as well; this is why you also need to set a particular date.

Planning your upcoming trip is not the only thing you can do though. There are 6 other things you can do when you can’t travel. So, make sure to check them all out!
