Staying connected to the internet while traveling, especially if solo, is highly crucial for safety, navigation, and communication. That’s why I personally recommend downloading an eSIM for instant connectivity; no extra roaming charges or physical SIM swap hassle. But if you’re new to this, you might be wondering how to install an eSIM on your phone, or if it’s even possible.
Installing and activating an eSIM is pretty straightforward, although it slightly varies depending on your provider and device. But don’t worry; I’ll walk you through the steps you need to follow to have internet on your phone while traveling without having to subscribe to buy a SIM card from a foreign carrier.

But first, in case you don’t know what’s an eSIM…
An eSIM, which is short for “embedded SIM”, is a digital form of the traditional physical SIM card. So, instead of swapping SIM cards, an eSIM can be installed on your smartphone via software, providing you with network connectivity.
What You Need Before Installing an eSIM
- First things first, you need to check if your smartphone is eSIM-compatible. When choosing a provider, you can check if your phone model is listed on their website/app. Or you can do a simple Google search. I found this comprehensive list on Get Your Guide.
- Make sure your phone is unlocked and can work overseas.
- Before downloading the new eSIM, make sure you have a stable internet connection.
- Look into the available packages at your destination of choice, offered by various eSIM providers such as Airalo and Jetpac. Compare your eSIM options with one another and with local data plans and see what’s most convenient. Most of the time, I end up downloading an eSIM, but sometimes, local data plans can be cheaper. If that’s the case, or if you need a local working phone number, then you might have to buy a SIM card instead. This is also why I always travel with a SIM card tray ejector.
How to Install an eSIM (Step-by-Step)
As I mentioned earlier, how to install an eSIM might vary slightly depending on the device and the app you’re using. I’ll break down the process for different devices for you. And if you’re using different apps, all you have to do is follow the instructions on the app, which will be pretty similar to the steps below.
How to Install an eSIM on iPhone
- Download the eSIM app you’ve chosen a plan from.
- Choose your destination and purchase the package you’ve selected.
- Choose an installation method: direct installation, QR code scanning, or manual installation.
- To activate your new eSIM, go to Settings, then Cellular/Mobile, and under “SIMs”, click on “Add eSIM”. You can also rename it to something like “Travel” or “eSIM France” to easily identify it.
- Set eSIM as primary, and make sure you turn off your main line as well to avoid roaming charges.
- Wait for activation.
How to Install an eSIM on Android (Samsung, Google Pixel, etc.)
The same steps and installation methods are applicable here as well, just with different settings paths.
- Samsung: Settings → Connections → SIM Manager
- Google Pixel: Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs
Just like the iPhone, make sure you add your new eSIM and set it as the primary line and wait for it to activate. Don’t forget to turn off your main line completely to avoid accidental charges.
About Different Ways to Install an eSIM
Direct Installation – the easiest method for beginners
You’ll simply tap on “install eSIM” and follow the instructions on the app. You’ll also need to adjust a few things in your cellular/mobile data settings to make sure you properly activate the eSIM and to be able to access data. All the instructions will be clear on the app.
QR Code Activation – ideal for travelers who plan ahead
You can generate a QR code that can be scanned from another device or printed on paper. You’ll also need to adjust your cellular/mobile data settings.
Manual Installation
In this case, you’ll enter details manually. You’ll copy the eSIM’s SM-DP+Address and activation code into your settings, and adjust the rest of the settings as previously mentioned.
After Installing: How to Set Up Your eSIM
As I clarified before, you will need to adjust the settings to properly set up your eSIM.
- Set the new eSIM as the primary data line, and enable roaming.
- Turn off your main line and disable roaming to avoid accidental charges.
- Label your newly downloaded eSIM to easily spot it from other lines.
- Now that you know how to install an eSIM, here’s how to switch back to your home settings: just reverse the steps.
Tips to Avoid Common eSIM Installation Mistakes
- Don’t delete your eSIM unless you’re absolutely done using it.
- Don’t reset network settings after installation.
- Always install an eSIM with WiFi turned on, while connected to a stable internet connection.
- If you’ll install via QR code, make sure to save it in multiple places (e.g., printed paper, in your photo gallery, on the cloud/drive, email it to yourself, etc.)
- Activate your eSIM right before taking off or as soon as you land if you guarantee having a stable WiFi connection, then.

FAQs Other Than “How to Install an eSIM?”
Can I install more than one eSIM?
Yes, most of the newer smartphones allow you to download multiple eSIMs, but only 1 or 2 can be active at the same time, depending on your phone’s model and specifications.
Can I use an eSIM and a physical SIM at the same time?
This depends on your device, but generally, yes. You can use the physical SIM card to make calls or send and receive text messages, and use your eSIM for data. Just make sure you turn off the data roaming for your physical SIM card to avoid accidental charges. Also, bear in mind that your local telecom provider will still charge you roaming fees for incoming and outgoing calls as well as sending or receiving text messages.
Why isn’t my eSIM working?
The basic knowledge of how to install an eSIM isn’t always enough. Other potential problems may include, but are not limited to, incorrect network settings, device compatibility issues, poor network connectivity, or a need for a software update. Make sure to double-check all these potential issues, and if you fail to identify the problem, it’s best if you reach out to your provider’s customer support team.
Can I reinstall a deleted eSIM?
No, you cannot reinstall a deleted eSIM unless your provider allows that, which is not common. Most eSIM plans are removed permanently from your device as soon as you delete them.
