Solo Travel Essentials for Safety 

#1 Anti-theft bag, money belt, or fanny pack

Whichever of these travel essentials you choose, just make sure your choice of daypack is either anti-theft or close enough to your body so that it cannot be easily pulled away. If you opt for the latter, I often go for a fanny pack or a messenger bag/crossbody bag if I’m carrying more items than what I could fit in a fanny pack. 

#2 Anti-theft apparel

Anti-theft solo travel essentials aren’t limited to bags; you can get stylish apparel as well. That’s why yours truly has designed a pickpocket-proof travel hoodie with a hidden zipper pocket. I love wearing mine at the airport for easy access to my passport and boarding passes. #3 Padlocks

I can’t stress enough how important padlocks are, whether to keep your luggage safe at the airport or to keep strangers out of your locker at the hostel. Personally, I prefer the old-school lock and key padlocks over the combination ones, as you can never go wrong with them. And if you’re concerned about misplacing your keys, I have a cool hack for you. I usually attach them to my mini-wallet or to my spiral hair tie. 

#4 Door Stop Alarm or Portable Door Lock 

Not all solo travelers stay in hostels, or at least, not every single time. We sometimes stay at hotels or Airbnbs, be it for comfort, convenience, or availability. This is when a portable door lock or door stop alarm comes in handy. You can never go wrong with an extra layer of security.

#5 Personal Safety Alarm

This is one of the travel essentials that might feel over the top at first, but it’ll at least keep the ladies’ minds at peace when they’re walking alone at night or when they don’t feel the safest. You can keep this personal safety alarm in your pocket, purse, or attach it to your keychain. If you feel unsafe, as soon as you pull the clasp, a super loud alarm will go off, giving you time to create a diversion or bring attention to you if needed.

#6 First-aid kit and meds pouch

Those who know me know really well that I learned this the hard way: a meds pouch must be at the top of your list of travel essentials. I fell incredibly ill on my first-ever solo trip, and if you’ve been following me for long enough, then you definitely know the story by heart by now. The moral of the story is: don’t be like 19-year-old Nadine and travel with a mini-pharmacy. I’ve included a list of everything you can include here. 

#7 Travel insurance 

Travel mishaps are more common than you think; flight delays, lost luggage, getting sick, electronics theft, you name it! That’s why you should never travel without getting insured. #8 Menstrual Products

This one’s for the solo travel girlies, obviously! Even if your period projected dates aren’t coinciding with your travel days, menstrual products are absolute travel essentials. Changing your environment, along with stress and other factors, can contribute to messing up your cycle. 

I can’t remember how many times I got my period earlier or much later than expected on trips. This can also happen to you, and you can be in the outdoors with zero resources or in a foreign country where you may have no access to your preferred menstrual product. So, whatever that is, pads, tampons, or menstrual cups, always include them in your packing list. Getting your period while traveling, especially solo, can be quite stressful, so better be prepared.

#9 Power bank

Spending a whole day out exploring will not just drain your physical battery but your smartphone’s battery as well. And you need that for navigation, staying connected, travel apps, and so on. That’s why you should always pack a fast-charging power bank, especially if your trip features content creation or taking endless footage of your favorite artists at a music festival.

#10 An eSIM 

Staying connected to the internet is crucial for safety above anything else, and downloading an eSIM is hassle-free and even cheaper in a lot of destinations than buying a physical SIM card. #11 AirTag/Tracker

This one is hands down one of the most important travel essentials, in my opinion. Ever since I started using AirTags, my travel game’s never been the same again! Keeping track of my luggage using my iPhone’s FindMy app has kept my anxiety to a minimum, especially during connecting flights. It’s also kept my mind at peace in public transportation or roaming busy foreign streets, as I like to keep one in my fanny pack/daypack just in case, God forbid, it gets snatched. 

If you’re not an iPhone user, don’t worry, there are alternatives for Android users.

#12 Universal Travel Adapter

Packing a universal travel adapter is a non-negotiable! This is another fact I learned the hard way. For some reason, I always forget to pack my travel adapter every time I visit Dubai, and I always need it there! In Dubai, electric sockets use type G plugs, while in Egypt, we use type C, so you can see why this is frustrating.

#13 Multiple payment methods 

Make sure to bring a mix of cash and cards; several ones, both debit and credit. This way, in case it stops working for whatever reason, or if it gets stolen, you have a backup plan. Cash is also important, as in some countries, like Egypt, cash is king in so many situations!

#14 Emergency cash stash

Speaking of cash, it’s also very helpful if you keep an emergency cash stash in case anything goes wrong. 

#15 Copies of Important Travel Documents

Be it your passport, visa, insurance, or flight ticket, always have multiple copies on you. Soft copies on your phone are great for convenience, but hard copies are huge for backup. You won’t know unless your phone breaks on a trip (true story). 

#16 Packing Cubes 

Many consider packing cubes as optional travel essentials; I know I did it at first. But ever since I started using them, I’ve leveled up my packing game. Using them isn’t just an organizational hack, but an ADHD-friendly one as well!

#17 Reusable Water Bottle

Staying hydrated is not optional. That’s why I always carry around a water bottle wherever I go, and you should too. A reusable one, though, is more eco-friendly and saves more money. You can also invest in a water bottle with a built-in filter if you’re refilling tap water. 

#18 Packable Tote Bag

Packing a foldable tote bag has come in handy so many times on my trips. Be it on day trips, beach days, or when I went shopping for souvenirs. It literally requires little packing space, but offers you extra space at other times.

About Luxor

Luxor, located in southern Egypt, which is known as Upper Egypt, is one of the most prominent destinations to visit, and you must add it to your itinerary. Like I previously mentioned, Luxor is considered the world’s greatest open-air museum as it boasts one-third of the world’s ancient monuments. But that’s not the only reason why it’s a must-visit.

Modern Luxor, which was once known as Thebes, used to be the capital of Ancient Egypt from the Middle Kingdom (c. 2055–1650 BC) onwards. Most of its significant monuments, though, were built during the New Kingdom (c. 1550–1069 BC), showcasing the destination’s great historical, religious, and political significance.

The Nile River divides Luxor into two sides: the East and West banks. The East Bank was a hub for worship and administration, as it’s home to two of the most important temples in Egypt, Karnak and Luxor temples. On the other hand, the West Bank was dedicated to the dead. In Ancient Egyptian culture, the sun setting in the west symbolizes the journey to the afterlife and rebirth. This is why Ancient Egyptians chose this area to build necropolises, mortuary temples, and tombs. Those include iconic archaeological sites like the Valleys of the Kings and Queens, and the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut.

Given its rich heritage and extraordinary history, Luxor and its necropolises were named  UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1979.

Where to Stay in Luxor, Egypt?

If you’re not visiting with a Nile Cruise, there are plenty of places to stay in Luxor if you’re flying in or going by train. Generally, I would recommend staying somewhere in the East Bank, especially if it’s your first time there, to be closer to the city center and the major attractions. The West Bank, on the other hand, boasts a variety of scenic stays, but they’re usually more secluded.

Best Time to Visit Luxor

Since Luxor is located in Upper Egypt, which is in the South, the weather is hot year-round. That’s why it’s best to visit Luxor during the cooler months, from October to April. The best weather is in the winter months, from December to February, but this is also the peak season. Not just because of the great weather conditions, but also because Christmas break is foreigners’ high season, and locals’ high season is during the mid-term vacation, which takes place from mid-January to mid-February. 

If you’d like to travel during the shoulder season, then aim to travel during the fall (October/November) or spring (March/April). Either way, avoid traveling to Luxor in the summer at all costs as it’s extremely hot during that time of year. 

Getting Around in Luxor

#1 Taxi

The easiest way to get around is by hailing a taxi. Luxor is a small city, in comparison to Cairo, so taxis are quite affordable. One thing I did was when I felt comfortable with a driver, I took his number and called him in advance whenever I needed a ride. Having a couple of backup contacts would be smart, too.

#2 Walking

As I said, Luxor is a small city, so walking, at least on the East Bank around the center, is pretty doable. It’s also a great way of exploring the city.

#3 Carriage

This is one of the most popular things to do in Luxor. However, as I’m an avid animal lover, I try to only support such activities if they’re in no way endangering the animals or causing them any harm. As horses are considered service animals, I’d only choose to ride if their handlers are taking good care of them.

#4 Felucca

A trip to Egypt wouldn’t be complete without a felucca ride. And since Luxor’s East and West banks are separated by the Nile River, you will most likely take at least one ride to cross over to the other side. There are bridges, and you can cross over in a taxi, but the felucca ride is absolutely worth it.

Luxor Solo Travel Safety

When I went to Luxor as an adult, I didn’t travel solo as I usually do, to be honest. Not because it’s not safe, but because I was traveling on my birthday with one of my close friends. However, we both felt absolutely safe the entire time as two girls traveling alone, and I would definitely travel there solo if I ever get the chance. 

That said, if you’re solo traveling, there’s nothing to worry about as long as you’re vigilant and follow my tips. Here are some things to do in Luxor to travel safely:

• Be assertive: Luxor is one of the most touristy destinations in the world, so expect a lot of people trying to sell you something. Be it a ride, a tour, a souvenir, or even a photo. Persistent vendors are literally everywhere, and it can be very overwhelming. Just try to be patient, and if you simply don’t want the service or if you don’t want to stop for every single person, don’t be afraid to be firm. You can definitely do this without being rude. Two phrases that’ll come in handy are “Khalas”, which means “enough”, or “Laa Shokran”, which means “no, thank you”.
• Book your accommodation somewhere central if you’re traveling alone: as I mentioned earlier, the West Bank is a bit secluded, as everything is more spread out. So, if you’re a first-time solo traveler, it’s best if you stay in a well-reviewed area/hotel on the East Bank. The areas near the Karnak or Luxor temples, or the Corniche, are great options. However, if you opt for a laidback stay on the West Bank, make sure you book a reputable hotel or guest house that can arrange transfers for you.
• Avoid walking alone late at night: as I said, Luxor is generally safe, but it gets super quiet after 10 PM, especially if you’re staying on the West Bank. So, it’s best if you stick to well-lit areas or book a ride. 
• Only use licensed guides and official transportation: For tours, you can either book through your hotel or a reputable agency. For the latter, I usually look up trusted experiences on Get Your Guide and Viator. 
• Always agree on the price beforehand: Be it a taxi ride or a tour, always agree on the price first.
• Stay hydrated and don’t forget travel insurance: Luxor can get ridiculously hot even in the winter, when the weather is actually milder and safer to visit. So, dehydration and heat strokes are quite common. That said, carrying a reusable water bottle with you, applying sunscreen, and wearing a sun hat and/or sunglasses are some of the most important things to do in Luxor to stay safe. And in case anything goes wrong, it’s better if you’re insured; personally, I highly recommend SafetyWing’s Nomad Insurance as it’s both a medical and travel insurance. • Contact the tourism police when needed: You don’t need the police only when it comes to emergencies. In Egypt, the tourist police can be quite helpful with scams, price disputes, or harassment. Their hotline is 126.

Things to Do in Luxor: Top Attractions You Can’t Miss

#1 Karnak Temple 

Visiting the Karnak Temple is one of my top things to do in Luxor, as it’s one of my favorite temples and archaeological sites in all of Egypt. It was even dubbed Ipet‑Sut, which means “the most esteemed of places” by the Ancient Egyptians themselves.

Located on the East Bank of Luxor, it boasts many temples and chapels, including the Great Temple of Amun. That’s why the temple’s priesthood held great importance and political power at the time. In addition to the Amun Precinct, there are also the Precinct of his wife, Mut, to the South, and the Precinct of Montu to the North, and to the East, Akhenaten’s Temple to Aten.

Karnak is known for the world-famous Avenue of Sphinxes, linking it to Luxor Temple, and the iconic Great Hypostyle Hall. But what some people may not know is that Karnak’s Great Temple of Amun is built to be oriented towards Luxor Temple as well. Like most Ancient Egyptian temples, it was built on an East-West axis. This was because these ancient models were meant to represent the cosmos, and their layouts meant that they mirrored the sun god Ra’s trajectory through the sky. However, the Temple of Amun also has a North-South axis, orienting it towards Luxor Temple. 

Fun Fact:

One of my personal favorite highlights in Karnak is the giant Kheper Scarab statue by the Sacred Lake. In Ancient Egypt, scarabs (dung beetles) symbolized growth, rebirth, and transformation. People wore scarab amulets for good luck and protection; I personally wear a scarab pendant that I never take off!

Anyhow, the legend surrounding the iconic scarab statue in Karnak says that encircling it would bring good luck. Some claim you should do 3 laps, and others say 7. Some people also say 3 is for luck and 7 is for a baby! Others claim that 3 laps are for good luck, 7 for marriage, and 9 to get pregnant. How the ritual started isn’t clear, but people still do it for fun to this day anyway, and it’s super popular amongst tourists!

#2 Luxor Temple

Unlike most Ancient Egyptian temples that were built on an East-West axis, Luxor Temple was oriented towards Karnak Temple, which is 3 kilometers away. This is because Luxor Temple played an integral role in one of Ancient Egypt’s significant celebrations, the Opet Festival. During this annual grand ceremony, the sacred statues of the god Amun, his wife Mut, and their son Khonsu were carried from their temples in Karnak to Luxor Temple along the Avenue of Sphinxes. This journey was carried out so that the triad could visit Amenemopet, the deity worshipped at Luxor Temple. 

Luxor Temple was built and expanded over several centuries by multiple rulers, with its earliest structure dating back to Queen Hatshepsut’s era. On the other hand, the main body of the temple, as well as the Great Colonnade, was constructed during the reign of Amenhotep III. Ramesses II also made multiple significant additions, including the massive entrance pylon, colossal statues, and two obelisks, one of which now stands at the Place de la Concorde in Paris.

During the Roman Empire’s rule, they transformed parts of the temple into a military fort, covering original walls with plaster and painting over them in Graeco-Roman style. The reliefs, depicting Emperor Diocletian and his 3 co-regents, had largely disappeared but can still be seen.

#3 Mortuary Temple of Queen Hatshepsut 

As I previously mentioned, the West Bank of Luxor was dedicated to the dead. That’s why Queen Hatshepsut (c.1473–1458 BC) built a magnificent funerary temple at el Deir el-Bahari, on the West Bank of Luxor. 

The complex wasn’t devoted solely to her; the temple also includes sections for the cults of her father, Thutmose I, the goddess Hathor, and the funerary god Anubis. An altar, open to the sky and the sun, was also dedicated to the cult of Ra, and the Sanctum Sanctorum was given to Amun.

#4 Valley of the Kings

The West Bank’s funerary association is the reason why the Valley of the Kings, a royal burial site, was located on the Western side. Powerful kings of the 18th, 19th, and 20th dynasties of the New Kingdom (c.1550-1069) were buried there. However, unlike what the site’s name suggests, the valley wasn’t just limited to rulers. Some members of the royal family, aside from the kings, were buried there as well, as were a few non-royal, though very high-ranking officials.

There are over 60 tombs at the archaeological site; however, the ticket grants you access to 3 tombs of your choice. There are also extra special tombs that you need to pay extra for. From the tombs that were open at the time of my visit, I chose the tombs of Ramesses III, Ramesses IV, and Merenptah to see. I also paid extra tickets for the tombs of Ramesses V & VI, Tutankhamun, and Seti I. Visiting these tombs is one of the things to do in Luxor that I highly recommend, as I’ve seen some of the most mindblowing artwork I’ve ever laid my eyes on!

#5 Valley of the Queens

Also located on the Western side, this burial site, as the name suggests, is dedicated to the queens, but also to princesses and royal children. Some of the significant tombs there are those of Queen Titi, Prince Amunherkhepshef, and Prince Khaemwaset. However, the most significant of all is the tomb of Queen Nefertari, dubbed the Jewel of the Valley. It’s also often referred to as the Sistine Chapel of Ancient Egypt due to the marvelous, vivid frescoes. That’s why a very limited number of visitors are allowed inside each day, and for an extra ticket.

#6  Colossi of Memnon

The 2 gigantic faceless statues, about 18 meters tall, originally represent King Amenhotep III, one of the 18th dynasty’s greatest kings. Famous for their grandeur, they’re each cut from a single block of stone, weighing 1,000 tons, sitting at the entrance of the king’s very own funerary temple, still being excavated. 

PRO TIP: Given that it’s probably the first thing tourists flock to as their buses arrive on the West Bank, the best time for a quick stop is right after sunrise. This way, you don’t just guarantee crowd-free photos, but also colorful hot air balloons in the background.

Other Things to Do in Luxor: More Attractions to Visit if You Have the Time

If you’re done with all the essential things to do in Luxor, and you have some extra time on your hands, here are some underrated attractions that are worth a visit:

#1 The Ramesseum (Temple of Ramesses II) 

The Ramesseum is the funerary temple of Ramesses II, one of Ancient Egypt’s most powerful and famous kings. The temple, built in the 13th century BC from sandstone, later became a model for other funerary temples. 

Much of the complex is now in ruins; however, it once boasted massive pylons, courtyards filled with columns, and more impressive architectural details. One of the most notable details is how the reliefs on the walls of the temple depicted Ramesses II’s military victories, including the famed Battle of Kadesh, as well as other religious and funerary scenes. The Ramesseum is a strong testament to Ramesses II’s legacy and the grandeur of Ancient Egypt’s architecture.

#2 Medinet Habu (Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III)

The Mortuary Temple of Ramesses III, also known as Medinet Habu, is one of the best-preserved temples in Egypt. Inspired by the neighboring Ramesseum, the temple doubled as both the place for Ramesses III’s funerary ritual and for worshipping the god Amun. 

Surrounded by huge mud-brick defensive walls, the temple’s layout reflects the politically unstable era during which it was built. Visitors can explore grand pylons, columned halls, chapels, courtyards, and much more inside the complex. The meticulous reliefs depict Ramesses III’s military victories, making the site not just an architectural masterpiece, but also a significant historical record of one of Ancient Egypt’s famed kings’ accomplishments.

If you have extra time and you’re a museum fan, then the Luxor Museum is absolutely worth adding to your list of things to do in Luxor. This small, yet mighty, museum offers a wonderful overview of ancient Thebes, known today as Luxor.

Even though it’s a small museum but visiting it is one of the coolest things to do in Luxor, as it offers impressive insights into the mystery of mummification in Ancient Egypt. There, you can see actual mummies of both humans and animals, as well as the tools used in the process.

Things to Do in Luxor: Unique Experiences

#1 Hot air ballooning at sunrise

I know this sounds like an extra addition to your itinerary and budget, especially because it’s usually optional, but trust me, hot air ballooning is one of the most unforgettable things to do in Luxor. In fact, the whole reason why I went to Luxor the last time was that I wanted to cross this mindblowing experience off my bucket list on my birthday.

Restaurants in Luxor: Where to Eat?

Unfortunately, as an Egyptian, I didn’t find Luxor one of the best destinations to try authentic Egyptian cuisine. However, there was this one restaurant on the East Bank that I kept going back to every single day of my last trip to Luxor. They don’t just serve delicious, authentic Egyptian food, but the atmosphere and vibes there were spot on! So, if you’re looking for a restaurant that serves food that feels like a warm hug from an Egyptian grandma, Sofra is the place to go!

Day Trips From Luxor

Dendera

One of the best things to do in Luxor, if you have extra time on your hands, is to go on day trips to visit nearby temples and archaeological sites. One of the most beautiful places you could visit is the Temple of Dendera. 

Located in Qena, the Temple of Dendera was dedicated to the goddess Hathor, one of Ancient Egypt’s most celebrated deities. She was often associated with music, joy, dance, and motherhood; she was also dubbed the Lady of the Sky. Her temple, with its iconic entrance of six columns with Hathor’s head, is definitely one of the wonderful and best-preserved temples in Egypt, making it worth a visit.

Esna 

This city of Esna was one of the most significant cities in Ancient Egypt, especially during the Roman and Ptolemaic periods. The Temple of Esna was dedicated to the worship of the ram-headed god, Khnum, the god of creation. The inscriptions in this temple and the beautifully lotus-decorated pillars are so vivid, which makes this temple so special.

Edfu

The Temple of Edfu was dedicated to the famed god Horus and was partially built during the reign of Ptolemy III (246–221 BC) in 237 BC. The construction was then resumed 180 years later in the reign of Ptolemy XII (80–51 BC) in 57 BC.

It’s one of the most impressive and preserved temples in the country. Mostly because it remained buried under layers of debris for millennia, enabling its architectural and decorative elements to survive.

Aswan

In my opinion, Aswan deserves a multi-day trip, usually paired with Luxor due to their close proximity. I personally love kicking off this trip in Luxor, where it requires so much energy, and ending it unwinding in beautiful Aswan, where the nature and hospitality win. However, history buffs who are planning a short trip in Egypt may be more inclined to spend more time in Luxor for the archaeological sites. In this case, if you settle for a day trip, it’s completely fine. You might want to spend the day exploring Nubian villages like Gharb Seheil or Heissa, visit the mesmerizing Philae Temple, or go all the way to the famed Abu Simbel.

Hurghada

Egypt is a massive country, and it’s bigger than what most people think. That’s why planning your itinerary in a way that makes sense geographically is important. So, visiting Hurghada after Luxor, or vice versa, is a good idea if you’re planning to go to Hurghada as well. If not, and you only have one day, then a day trip from Luxor to Hurghada might be a wise choice if you want to take a break from the scorching heat and go snorkeling in the Red Sea instead.

How to Choose Hiking Shoes: Know All the Different Types of Hiking Footwear

Before diving into how to choose hiking shoes, it’s important to understand that there are different types of hiking footwear. Here’s a simplified breakdown that’ll help you get started: 

Hiking Sandals

As the name suggests, these sandals are super lightweight, breathable, and ideal for hot climates or trails that include water crossings. 

• Pros: Fast-drying, breathable, and easy to pack.
• Cons: Lack of toe protection and less ankle support.
• Best for: Summer hikes, travel days, and mixed trains that include water crossings.

Mountaineering boots are specialized, heavy-duty boots with insulation and stiff soles with crampons for extreme environments; think Everest Base Camp. On the other hand, Alpine hiking boots are a more supportive and stiffer category of hiking boots for challenging, but less extreme terrain.

• Pros: Designed for extreme weather conditions like snow, ice, and high altitude. 
• Cons: Too heavy and expensive, and not suitable for regular hikes. 
• Best for: Technical hikes and alpine expeditions.

How to Choose Hiking Shoes: What to Consider?

Now that you know your hiking footwear, it’s time to learn how to choose the right one for you. To do so, you need to understand that there are several decision factors that you need to consider first. 

#1 Terrain and Trail Type

The first decision factor you need to consider is the terrain type of the hike you’re attempting. If the terrain is flat and on the easy difficulty level, then opt for lighter hiking shoes. On the other hand, if it’s a steep rocky terrain with an uneven surface, you might need to look at hiking boots with ankle support and a good grip. And if you’ll be hiking in a wet, muddy environment, then you’ll need waterproof hiking boots with grippy soles.

#2 Duration and Load

How long is your hike, and how much will you be carrying? You might wear light, breathable hiking shoes for a day hike (if it’s an easy one). Meanwhile, multi-day treks would require sturdier hiking boots with ankle support, especially if the trek’s unsupported and you’ll be carrying a backpack and not just a daypack.

#3 Footwear Material and Water Resistance

The previous two factors will help you decide which footwear material is best for you. Synthetic footwear is lighter to travel with and fast-drying. Meanwhile, leather hiking boots are less breathable, but they’re more durable for more challenging hikes. 

Water resistance is also an important factor to consider. To simplify things, go for a waterproof pair for wet conditions and a non-waterproof one for hot, dry, desert hikes. That said, your hiking style will most likely help you choose the perfect pair.

#4 Breathability and Weight

Breathability is another important decision factor. It often comes with lightweight, but you’d need to trade off protection if you opt for this. It really depends on the climate and hiking conditions, and it’s sometimes a personal preference.

#5 Fit and Comfort

Always prioritize comfort over style to avoid blisters and injuries. For instance, as a tall girlie, I often have trouble finding my size as I have big feet. I wear size 41 in the EU, which is 9.5 in the US, and in some brands, it is 10 or even 10.5! That’s why, most of the time, I look at unisex designs in the men’s department. In fact, both of my hiking boots are men’s boots. So, don’t limit yourself to hiking shoes for women if you have a challenging size. 

My Favorite Hiking Footwear

A decade ago, I had no clue how to choose hiking shoes, and a hole in my Adidas was the physical proof of it. Fast-forward to this day, and I proudly own a couple of pairs that I absolutely love. It only took one travel mishap and a lot of research. Here are my favorite hiking footwear that I highly recommend:

Columbia Men’s Newton Ridge Plus II Suede Waterproof Hiking Boot 

• Even though it doesn’t look like it, it’s actually breathable and waterproof thanks to Columbia’s Omni-Tech technology, which keeps your feet dry and comfortable.
• They’re on the bulky side of hiking boots, but for leather ones, they’re considered pretty lightweight. 
• It offers both good midsole cushioning and a reliable outsole with a decent grip.
• They’re super stylish; they come in different colors as well, but I have the elk/mountain red ones.
• Also available in women’s sizes.

Merrell Alverstone Mid GTX 

• Merrell’s GORE-TEX technology offers enhanced waterproofing and breathability.
• The outsole offers a strong grip, which helped me embark on moderate, rocky terrains.
• This pair is quite versatile; I’ve worn it on mixed terrains, multi-day hikes, as well as day hikes. 
• They barely needed any time to break them in; they’re my comfiest pair. 
• They’re super durable as well. I’ve worn these in Petra, on a multi-day trek in Saint Catherine, and on multiple-day hikes, and they’re still pretty reliable and comfortable.

P.S.If you’re looking for something more robust for a more rugged terrain, the Moab 3 GORE-TEX might be a great upgrade. The Vibram outsole feature offers quality traction, and it’s also a sturdier pair with enhanced support that is ideal for more challenging hikes.

How to Choose Hiking Shoes: Trying and Testing Before Buying

Making sure your choice of hiking shoes is suitable for the terrain(s) you’ll be hiking is not enough. You need to test them out and make sure they’re literally the right fit for you! Here are a few tips on how to choose hiking shoes before buying them:

• Try out the new shoes at the end of the day when your feet are already worn out to see whether they’re comfy enough.
• Wear hiking socks or the ones you’ll be wearing on the hike.
• Always opt for ankle support when choosing the design to minimize the chances of injury.
• Put your index finger behind your ankle to make sure the shoes aren’t too tight.
• Make sure your heel isn’t moving up and down and that it’s well-supported.
• Walk around the store long enough to see how comfortable you are in the pair.
• Break in your shoes by wearing them multiple times before any big hike to avoid blisters.
• Try to buy the shoes at a store rather than making an online purchase, but if that’s inevitable, check return/exchange policies for online orders.
• If you’re a woman with big feet like yours truly, don’t limit yourself to hiking shoes for women. Both of my hiking boots are actually from the men’s department.

Those who’ve been following my content closely know very well that Dahab is my favorite destination in Egypt. I’ve been visiting regularly for over a decade – sometimes multiple times a year, and sometimes I stay for a month or more. It’s like my home away from the big city’s hustle and bustle; and pollution. 

Aside from Dahab’s magical nature and distinctive charm, one of my favorite things about the bohemian beach town was that it used to feel like Egypt’s closest thing to a place where coexistence actually exists. In Dahab, it never mattered what your background was, your social class, or whether you were wearing a bikini or a burkini on the beach. Everyone’s the same here. Everyone minds their own business. Sounds too good to be true, right?

Sadly, though, Dahab has garnered a lot of attention among both international and local tourists alike – not only for its astonishing nature, but also for its affordability. Even with the current inflation in Egypt, Dahab remains one of the most affordable holiday destinations in the country. Ignoring the fact that I still remember a time when I could rent an apartment for EGP 2.5K a month, while now, locals are struggling to pay rent because landlords are charging everyone tourist prices. So, even though the town’s cost of living is still way cheaper than other cities, rent alone can cost around EGP 20K per month now. There are cheaper apartments in Cairo, but that’s not the topic of this article. 

What I’m trying to shed light on here is how mass tourism is hurting more than it’s helping. Generally, when outsiders visit or move to a destination, they’re supposed to adapt to its culture. Unfortunately, the rule of thumb in Egypt is the exact opposite. Don’t get me wrong – I’m not trying to trash my own homeland. I spent more than seven years of my life promoting Egypt as a top travel destination, because it deserves every ounce of it. However, it’s only fair to acknowledge the flaws as well, in an attempt to make an actual change, and not just aimlessly criticize. 

So, where were we? Yes, Dahab’s culture… A coastal town in the Sinai desert, by the Red Sea’s Gulf of Aqaba, originally inhabited by the Bedouin Muzzeina tribe – all of this should give you an idea of the vibe: laid-back, slow-paced, eco-friendly, sustainable, you name it. But when mass tourism season arrives, you’ll find yourself avoiding central areas like Mashraba, or avoiding traveling during the summer or national holidays altogether. For some reason, visitors will arrive with their portable Boombox JBL speakers, judgmental looks, and the egocentric belief that this universe revolves around serving the human race alone. 

Littering cigarette butts and plastic on the beach, crashing into coral reefs with kayaks, and teaching kids it’s okay to traumatize jellyfish are among some of the quite disturbing behaviors I’ve witnessed firsthand during peak season. But one thing that drives me crazy is the rising phenomenon of parking cars right by the sea at Lagoona Beach, nose-dive style. I sometimes wonder what part of ‘natural protectorate’ people don’t get, but then I realize the term is probably not even in their dictionary. The beach is already filled with cigarette butts and broken glass. But is it so hard to understand that this is a public beach and not a public parking lot? There’s literally endless parking space just a few meters away from the sea, where I seem like the only person who puts it to use on the days I visit.

The craziest thing is when I complain to drivers for parking right beside or behind me when I’m just trying to lie down on the beach like a normal beachgoer, I’m looked at as if I’m an alien. As if it’s alright to inhale car fumes, take in the motor’s heat, or simply as if the cars are not occupying space that should be reserved for other humans who’d like to sit where there’s swimmable water. 

Last week, mid one of these frequent arguments, some other guy decided to intrude and gaslight me. He even decided to judge me for renting shade from one of the Bedouins! He claimed that this type of behavior normalizes “renting space” on a public beach. *inserts facepalm emoji* Not sure why I was being attacked for renting a couple of sticks and a piece of cloth – from an indigenous woman trying to make a living – to protect me and my dog from the scorching sun. Was that dude trying to say he’s unhappy that locals are offering a simple service, that by the way, he’s not whatsoever forced to use or pay for? Aren’t WE the guests in their land or what? He proceeded to badmouth and curse me to his friend – I obviously didn’t let it slide and gave him a piece of my mind, but he ended up killing the mood. 

Why and when have people become so unhinged? Why is respecting the environment and the space we take up too much to ask for? And are our vacationing options now limited to either this or gated communities and QR codes (throwing shade at the North Coast aka Sahel)? Where can I have a normal summer in Egypt? Anyone, please?

5. Let the filter rest in the mug for a couple of minutes, then stir again for another 10 seconds if you prefer your coffee strong.
6. Pull out and press the plunger a few times to release rich flavor. You may repeat the process if needed.

P.S. You can make hot tea using the same process.

FinalPress Step-by-Step Guide for Cold Brew

1. Add room temperature water to a mason jar, then place your FinalPress in the water.
2. Pass the lid through your FinalPress plunger and screw it to the mason jar. The lid already comes with the rest of the FinalPress parts.
3. Refiritate overnight.
4. Stir and press the plunger, like in the first process, before drinking.

How to Clean Your FinalPress Camping Coffee Maker

Cleaning FinalPress at Home/Hotel/Hostel

• As soon as you receive your FinalPress, soak the parts in hot water and mild detergent for an hour for deep cleaning before the first use.
• After using, disassemble the parts and rinse with warm water to remove any coffee residue. Use a mild detergent and gently brush or scrub the filter and all the parts, then rinse again.
• If you use your FinalPress regularly, make sure to deep clean it on a weekly basis.

Cleaning FinalPress in the Outdoors

• When you’re out camping, make sure to rinse your FinalPress immediately after using it, using clean water, if available. Use a water bottle to pour water over the parts and remove any coffee residue.
• Wipe it down using a tissue to remove any leftovers or moisture.
• Let it air dry for a bit to avoid any moldy smells.

My Experience Using FinalPress

So far, I’ve tested my FinalPress several times in multiple settings. First time I tested it was at home, because I was so excited to try it out, to be honest, and I was blown away! The coffee tasted incredible; it was silky smooth, and it tasted just like barista-made filtered coffee, just minus all the paper filters and the brewing skills. It was also very easy to use, and the process was pretty easy to understand as well. The package came with a straightforward instructions sheet, and there’s a very helpful tutorial video on the official website as well, if you like visual aids like me.

I also tried it while traveling – I took it on a camping trip in Fayoum, and I also used it while staying in a guesthouse in Aswan. All I had to do was pack my own coffee and boil some water. Like I mentioned before, cleaning it was a piece of cake, and it wasn’t messy at all, especially in the outdoors. About Abu Simbel

The Abu Simbel Temples are located in Nubia, in Aswan governorate, near Egypt’s southern border. King Ramses II of the 19th Dynasty cut into the existing rock formations to build the world-famed temples. The main temple is known for its iconic facade where the 4 colossal seated statues are located; 2 on each side of the entrance. Below their feet, there are small figures representing the king’s family. You can also see fragments of one of the colossal statues on the ground as a result of an ancient earthquake.

On the inside, there are 3 interconnected halls and detailed hieroglyphic inscriptions on the walls, including battle scenes from Ramses’ victory at the Battle of Kadesh. There are more colossal statues of Ramses posing as Osiris, lined up and leading to the innermost sanctuary, where the 4 deities are sitting: Amun Ra, Ra Horakhty, Ptah, and a deified version of Ramses II.

A smaller temple, also rock-cut, sits to the north of it. However, this one is dedicated to Ramses II’s wife, Queen Nefertari, and Hathor, the goddess of the sky, women, fertility, and love. On the facade are 6 colossal statues of the king and queen. 

Abu Simbel’s Relocation

The construction of the High Dam posed a threat to submerge the Abu Simbel Temples. So, in 1968, the temples were carefully dismantled and relocated to a higher ground just like the Philae Temple. And almost a decade later, in the late 70s, Abu Simbel was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

How to Book the Abu Simbel Tour

There are tons of tour operators and travel agencies in Aswan that will offer to take you to Abu Simbel, but how to know which ones are the best? In a touristy country like Egypt, the abundance of options can be overwhelming. What I personally recommend, and what I’ve done myself, is reading reviews online. Look at what other explorers, especially solo travelers if you’re venturing alone, are saying online about tour operators. Aside from platforms like TripAdvisor and Yelp, travelers will be reviewing specific experiences on booking platforms like Get Your Guide, Viator, and Klook–these are some of my favorites.

What the Abu Simbel Tour Typically Consists Of

A day trip from Aswan to Abu Simbel will require an entire morning as the drive to the archaeological site will take approximately 3-4 hours–so there are 6 hours wasted just on the road. That said, expect a very early hotel pickup. I guarantee you it’s absolutely worth it, though!

• Early morning pick-up: Aside from the long drive, it’s best to go as early as possible to beat the crowds. Expect to be picked up as early as 3 to 4 AM, which depends on the driver’s route, if it’s not a private tour and you’re sharing it with others. For instance, I was picked up around 4 AM; however, I was the last person to be picked up from a small group of 5 as I was staying in the Nubian village.

P.S. If you’re not staying in Aswan, the city, and you’re staying elsewhere, expect an extra cost for an extra means of transportation like a speedboat or a motor tricycle. For example, the mini-bus couldn’t pick me up from the Nubian village of Gharb Seheil as it would’ve wasted the entire group a lot of time and the road wasn’t really mini-bus-friendly. So, a motor tricycle picked me up and dropped me off at another pick-up point so I could join my group.

• 3-hour ride to Abu Simbel: If you can sleep in a moving vehicle, that’s great, because this is your only chance to recharge for your Abu Simbel tour. Expect to be woken up by a stunning sunrise–take it in and snack on your packed breakfast as you’ll have a long day ahead of you.
• Meeting your guide: Your driver will drop you off at the parking lot right outside the Abu Simbel Temples, and there, you’ll meet your tour guide. On your way inside, you’ll make a stop at the ticket office to purchase your ticket(s) as they’re often not included in the Abu Simbel tour itself.
• Quick history lesson: Upon your arrival in front of the Abu Simbel Temples, your tour guide will tell you all about the temples’ history and what you’ll see inside. This is to save time spent inside each temple so you wouldn’t overcrowd the site.

• Exploring the temples: Afterwards, your guide will give you some free time to explore at your own pace. Generally, the main temple will require 30 minutes and the small temple will take around 15 minutes (photography time included). 
• Back to Aswan: Depending on the agreed time for regrouping you might have some time for souvenir shopping on your way out–you can also buy snacks or use the restroom if you need to. Then, you’ll head back to Aswan and will probably arrive sometime between 1 and 2:30 PM, depending on your tour’s itinerary and route.

The Best Times to Visit Abu Simbel 

Winter months are the best time to go on the Abu Simbel tour, or visit Aswan, in general, as it’s in the most southern, and hottest, part of Egypt. So, December through February are the best months to visit, weather-wise, but bear in mind that this is also the peak season.

If you’re traveling to Egypt in October or February, then make sure you plan your trip with the solar alignment in mind. You see, twice every year, on the 22nd of October and the 22nd of February, the sun penetrates the Temple of Abu Simbel, illuminating the inner sanctuary.

Fun fact: Before relocating the temple, the solar alignment took place on the 21st of October and February, instead of the 22nd. 

Unfortunately, I wasn’t lucky enough to witness the solar alignment even though I went on the 21st of February! Due to some circumstances, I had to make some changes to my travel plans so I left Aswan later on the 21st, a couple of days earlier than I originally planned.

The site is open daily from 6 AM to 5 PM (last entry at 4 PM). However, bear in mind that in Ramadan, entry is from 7 AM to 3 PM.

Tips to Make the Best Out of Your Abu Simbel Tour

• The earlier you start your Abu Simbel tour, the better. If you can start as early as right after sunrise, do so. The site is often overcrowded with tourists and that can ruin your experience, especially if you have to deal with entitled tourists like I did–that’s the worst kind!
• Don’t forget to pack breakfast, since you’ll miss it at the hotel, as well as snacks for the long day. There’s a cafeteria there, but I don’t recommend you rely on that as you’ll be overcharged for everything. If you inform your hotel that you’re going on the Abu Simbel tour, they will most likely pack you a breakfast box in the morning–it’s a common thing in Aswan.
• Make sure you bring a hat and apply (and reapply) sunscreen so you won’t get a heatstroke. Speaking of which, also pack a large water bottle to stay hydrated.
• As you walk out of the site, you’ll be forced to walk through souvenir shops. If you don’t want to be overcharged or stopped by vendors every few seconds, walk in the exit direction without letting your eyes wander, be assertive, and it’s best if you learn a couple of helpful Arabic phrases. “Laa Shokran” is “no, thank you” and “Khalas” is “enough!”

The Abu Simbel tour is more than just ticking off another historic site–it’s walking into a masterpiece of ancient engineering. The world-renowned temples are a tribute to power and a testament to the great lengths we’re willing to go to preserve our history. So, whether you find yourself drawn to the sheer grandeur of the site, the magnetic spiritual aura in its halls, or its fascinating story, Abu Simbel is a truly wonderful experience you will never forget.

The Story Behind Hadouta Masreya

Hadouta Masreya, which translates to “Egyptian Tale” in Arabic, is a traditional guesthouse named after the iconic song by legendary Egyptian singer Mohamed Mounir, who also happens to be a family friend of the owners. Being Nubian himself, Mohamed Mounir holds a special place in the hearts of his people, and the property pays homage to his legacy in a truly unique way. 

Instead of just numbers, each room is named after one of his songs, with the lyrics beautifully inscribed on the walls. This creative detail makes every stay a truly immersive experience, especially for Mounir’s lovers. 

It’s also worth mentioning that Hadouta Masreya was the second guesthouse ever to open its doors to the public in Gharb Seheil. One of the founders, Shereen, who’s an Egyptian solo female traveler herself, was the only woman to start her own project in the Nubian village at the time.

Hadouta Masreya’s Location in the Nubian Village 

Hadouta Masreya is located in Gharb Seheil, the most popular Nubian village in Aswan. This Nubian village is famous for its colorful houses and vibrant bazaar. This is where you should get the best souvenirs when in Aswan–there is far more variety and unique options than at the old Aswan Souk, and you can definitely get better deals than at Philae Temple. 

As for transportation, there’s a touristic ferry dock, just a couple of minutes’ walk from Hadouta Masreya, in the heart of the bazaar. However, the main transportation method to and from the Nubian village is the 3-wheeled motor tricycle. Since the road is rugged and isn’t well-paved, there aren’t taxis around. You need to take the tricycle to the bridge connecting the village with the city. 

A great perk about staying at Hadouta Masreya is that they can hire a private driver for you. Mohamed, the driver they hired for me, was super friendly and hospitable. He arrived early before my train arrived in Aswan, and he coordinated my pickup time with me in advance. On my way back home, he helped me with my luggage all the way till he made sure I got on my train back to Cairo safely. He even noticed I was falling asleep on our way to the station, so he stopped and brought me a Red Bull (he knew it was my favorite energy drink from an earlier conversation). It’s also worth mentioning that Mohamed was always on time, so don’t worry and don’t expect the typical Egyptian timing. 

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room–safety. I know this will be a great concern, especially if you’re a solo female traveler, but believe it or not, I’ve never felt as safe in my entire life as I have in the Nubian village. I’m not exaggerating, and this is not one of those cases where it’s all about personal experiences that vary from one person to the other. To prove to you the level of safety, local vendors in the Nubian village don’t bother to lock up their shops after dark! They simply cover their stands and displays to protect their merchandise from dust. This is how safe it is.

Accommodation

Hadouta Masreya offers single, double, and triple rooms, making the guesthouse perfect for solo travelers as well as those traveling in pairs or groups. Each air-conditioned ensuite room comes with clean towels and bed linens, as well as coat hangers and storage space. 

Some of the rooms come with a balcony and a premium Nile view—I stayed in one of those on my last visit. The room, as well as the balcony, were quite spacious, and I truly enjoyed working and reading with that view. The balcony, along with the songs bit I mentioned earlier, were among my favorite things about the accommodation itself. 

It doesn’t stop there–Hadouta Masreya is also implementing sustainable efforts. It’s the first guesthouse in the Nubian village to embrace upcycling by creatively repurposing wooden pallets into beds. This not only makes the property eco-friendly but also reflects its commitment to simplicity. Hadouta Masreya prioritizes hospitality, quality service, and a culturally immersive experience. For instance, they intentionally chose not to include TVs in any of the rooms to encourage guests to fully embrace the surrounding atmosphere.

Available Facilities

The Atmosphere

The Atmosphere in the Nubian Village

The Nubian village of Gharb Seheil is mostly famous for its traditional Nubian houses, painted in bright colors and murals, making it the most colorful place in Egypt. Nubians are known for their unmatched hospitality and generosity, so don’t be surprised if locals welcome you into their homes for a cup of tea, a meal, or even to meet their pet crocodiles! 

It’s worth mentioning that Gharb Seheil may no longer be as quiet as the other Nubian villages or how it once was. Its growing popularity in recent years has led to an influx of restaurants and guesthouses, so expect frequent traditional Nubian performances and celebrations after sunset.  

During the day, the Nubian village buzzes with the market’s hustle and bustle and the arrival of tourists at the ferry dock. It’s not as overwhelming as it sounds, though. In fact, the air is filled with the aroma of freshly brewed herbal tea and fragrant spices, adding to Gharb Seheil’s unique charm.

The Atmosphere at Hadouta Masreya

Just like the rest of the village, the staff at Hadouta Masreya falls no short of hospitality and generosity. Everyone who works there is super friendly and helpful and will make you feel right at home. 

In spite of the guesthouse’s cozy and relaxing atmosphere, it’s noteworthy that it’s a family-friendly place. The presence of families and big groups might influence the atmosphere at the restaurant or the reception, but don’t fret, I found the rooftop to be the perfect getaway whenever I wanted some peace and quiet in the evening. 

Value for Money

For bed and breakfast accommodation, expect to pay something between USD 70 and 175 per room per night if you’re a foreigner or EGP 1,540 and 3,755 if you’re an Egyptian. Prices vary depending on the travel dates, the occupancy, the size of the room, and whether or not it comes with a view. 

If you’re a solo traveler, expect to pay from USD 70 to 110 or from EGP 1,540 to 2,650 per night, which is great value for money when you consider food, WiFi, and the authentic Nubian experience. It’s also super budget-friendly when you compare it with hotel prices in the city, outside of the Nubian village.

Overall Experience

A lot of things can make guests return to a property–food, atmosphere, comfort, you name it! But to me personally, what keeps me going back to any business is always the service. In my opinion, that’s what makes or breaks any business, whether it’s a hotel or not. And that’s exactly what brought me back to Hadouta Masreya after all these years. But it wasn’t just any service—it was something truly special.

It all goes back to the story of how my solo travel journey began. As I mentioned earlier, when I took my first-ever solo trip to the Nubian village, I stayed at Hadouta Masreya. Luxor and Aswan Transportation Options: Sleeper Train, Talgo Train, Flights, and More

Whether you’re traveling to Luxor or Aswan from Cairo or flying in from your home country, you’ll have to take one of the following transportation options. If you’ve never tried either before, making up your mind can be difficult. Lucky for you, I’ll break down my full experience with each transport method to help you reach the most suitable decision. 

But first, what are your options? The most commonly known transportation methods to or from Luxor or Aswan are the sleeper train, which many travelers have doubts about, and regular domestic flights. In addition to those, you can also hit the road, whether via bus or car; however, I don’t recommend either of those options–more on that later.

Trains: Sleeper Train VS Talgo Train

Sleeper Train

Let’s start with Egypt’s sleeper train, one of the most common and popular options. The trains themselves are pretty old, so don’t expect anything fancy; however, they’re fine and relatively clean. Each cabin has 2 convertible beds, the lower bunk is made up of regular seats that are later converted to a bed. You can’t convert the beds yourself, though–you need the conductor to do this for you. The cabin also has a convertible table, coat hangers, a mirror, and a sink. 

PRO TIP: Make sure to pack your own blanket as no covers are provided, and it gets chilly at night, especially if you’re traveling in the winter. 

As for the bathroom situation, it’s a shared bathroom. I honestly haven’t tried it myself, as luckily, I didn’t have to use the bathroom, but my picky friend did (I wasn’t traveling solo when I rode this train), and she said it was fine. But again, I wouldn’t have high expectations if I were you. 

Every ticket also includes a hot meal of your choice. Personally, I’m not a fan of food on trains in Egypt, in general, so you might want to bring snacks with you if you’re a picky eater, as it’s a long ride. The Cairo-Luxor train takes around 10 hours, and the Cairo-Aswan train takes around 12 hours, with the stops and all.

Overall, I didn’t mind the experience; to me, it seemed “adventurous,” if that makes any sense. The only thing that really bothered me was how often we were bothered by the conductor’s aggressive knocking and lack of patience. To be honest, most times he knocked, he had a valid reason, but he wasn’t patient when we didn’t open the door instantly, which was pretty frustrating. The cabin was too small, so getting through our luggage to the door took a few seconds, which apparently seemed inconvenient to him. I mean, I could’ve been changing my clothes as well. Also, he didn’t like it when he wanted to set up the beds when we weren’t ready to sleep–we told him we had work, but it still wasn’t ideal for him. 

You might be wondering, “but Nadine, this train sucks, why would I book it?” In most cases, aside from the sleeper train’s “adventurous” nature, travelers book it mainly for budget reasons, as trains are cheaper than flights. However, the price difference isn’t that big of a deal for foreigners as their train tickets are way more expensive than Egyptians’. 

For Egyptians, the sleeper train ticket costs EGP 1,050 per person for a 2-person cabin and EGP 2,050 for a single cabin. On the other hand, foreigners’ tickets for the sleeper train range between USD 90 and 130 depending on the cabin type: double or single occupancy. 

How to Book Egypt’s Sleeper Train?

The sleeper trains in Egypt are not operated by the Egyptian National Railways company but by a third party called Abela Trains. They have their own website and offices at the train stations. To book the sleeper train, you can either do it in person at the train station or via Abela Trains’ official website.

Talgo Train

If you think that the sleeper train is the only option to Luxor or Aswan, you’re wrong. There are a lot of different trains; there’s the Talgo train, the VIP Special Express (that’s just a name; there’s nothing premium about it), the Spanish train, and the Russian train. For a long and tiring ride like this one, the Talgo train is the best option from the regular seating trains as it’s the newest one, introduced in 2023.

The Talgo train is a modern air-conditioned one with 2 options: 1st class and 2nd class. The seats feel a lot like those of an airplane, so I just considered my ride like a long-haul flight. The main difference is that the seats in 1st class are bigger.

Each seat gets access to an electric socket and a USB port to charge devices, as well as a small bin. There’s also a food and beverage serving cart that passes by every now and then–you can get something and expect the steward to return later for payment. 

As for the bathroom situation on the Talgo train, they’re regularly cleaned between uses, so using the toilet wasn’t an issue at all. To be completely honest, though, I did have one incident where I couldn’t use the bathroom because of the previous occupant–let’s not get into the gross details. The cleaning guy did get in to fix the mess he made before I could use the bathroom, but I honestly just couldn’t. Other than that, you should be fine. 

How to Book the Talgo Train?

The Talgo train is operated by the Egyptian National Railways, so you can either book it online via the website or app or in person at the train station. Here are a few things you need to know about booking the Talgo train, though:

• Train tickets are released 2 weeks before travel dates, so booking before that isn’t an option.
• Online booking is, unfortunately, available for Egyptians only, so if you’re a foreigner, you have to book the Talgo train at the station beforehand.
• Online booking is full of bugs, and it’s not a very user-friendly process, so you want to try booking as soon as the tickets are out just in case.
• If you need to return your ticket for whatever reason, you need to return it and request a refund the same way you booked it. So, for instance, if you booked a ticket online and you need to return it, you must return it online and not at the train station, and vice versa. There will be a penalty fee, of course. 

Which Railway Stations to Ride From

The main railway station in Cairo is Ramses Station; however, trains heading to Upper Egypt usually take off and arrive at Giza Station and the newly opened Bashtil Station. The train will pass by both train stations anyway, but if your location in Cairo is close to both, Bashtil is much cleaner and nicer. Just bear in mind that if a train is heading to Luxor or Aswan from Cairo, it will take off from Bashtil first, then Giza.

Domestic Flights 

The fastest and most convenient way to travel to Luxor or Aswan from Cairo, or vice versa, is taking a domestic flight. The Cairo-Luxor flight takes around an hour, while the Cairo-Aswan flight takes around an hour and a half. Taking a flight will save up to 9-11 hours of travel, depending on where you’re going. Flights are usually more expensive than the Talgo train and the sleeper train, though, especially if you’re Egyptian, since train tickets are more expensive for foreigners. If you’re a foreigner, a flight might cost you the same or slightly more, depending on many factors, like your travel dates and airline. Speaking of airlines, those that operate domestically are EgyptAir, Nile Air, and Air Cairo. 

The best time to go to Luxor and Aswan is from October to April, when the weather is warm and pleasant. Temperatures during these months are ideal for sightseeing and outdoor activities like hot air ballooning in Luxor. The peak tourist season, though, is from December through February, especially during Christmas break. For cheaper flights and fewer crowds, I’d avoid the holidays if I were you: Christmas break and the local mid-term vacation, which is usually from the end of January till mid-February. 

As for summer months, from May to September, that’s the low season; avoid that time at all costs! These are the hottest months in Egypt, and Upper Egypt (the south) is the hottest region in the entire country. Temperatures soar above 40°C (104°F), so both Luxor and Aswan will be unbearable. You can still travel to Egypt during that time as it’s a year-round destination, but it’s best to go to a beach town like Dahab or El Gouna.

Your best shot, budget-wise, would be the shoulder season, which is during the spring or fall months: March, April, October, and November. The temperatures would be higher than in winter, but still comfortable to travel, and you’ll manage to find cheaper flights during these times. Not to mention that, of course, there will be far fewer crowds than in the high season.

Booking a Domestic Flight in Egypt

Other Transportation Options

Aside from domestic flights, the Talgo train, and the sleeper train, you can also take a bus or drive. However, I don’t recommend the Upper Egypt bus unless you’re completely broke and don’t mind sitting in a bus for 12 hours with zero legroom. 

As for driving, if you’re a foreigner, I don’t recommend driving in Egypt altogether. Driving here is an extreme sport, and since you won’t be used to the driving culture here, I don’t think it’s wise. If you’re Egyptian and decide to go on a road trip, as far as I know, the Upper Egypt roads were recently renovated, but you need to be careful as you pass through Qena, as I heard it’s not the best part of the road. 

Final Verdict

All in all, if I’d choose again between a flight, the Talgo train, or the sleeper train, I’d opt for the flight for comfort and convenience. If you don’t have a lot of vacation days but have the budget and plan your trip in advance so you can find good flight deals, you should be good to go. On the other hand, if you can’t manage to find cheap flights and you don’t mind wasting 10-12 hours of travel, then you can opt for the train, whether it’s the sleeper or Talgo train.

What Makes Hot Air Ballooning in Luxor Special

Riding a hot air balloon, in general, is a truly great experience. But why Luxor? Well, imagine floating over 5,000+ years of history! Sounds surreal, right? It feels like that as well. Luxor is home to ⅓ of the world’s monuments, and the hot air balloon ride will show you around from a bird’s eye view. Some of the landmarks you can witness from above include the Valley of the Kings, Hatshepsut Temple, Colossi of Memnon, and more.

In addition to all of that, picture that panoramic view at sunrise! Throw in desert landscapes and lush fields into the equation, and voilà, you get yourself a bucket list-worthy experience. 

How to Book a Hot Air Balloon Ride in Luxor

To book a hot air balloon ride in Luxor, you can either book online or directly through local operators. If you book online, the platforms I love the most are Tinggly, Get Your Guide, and Viator.

On the other hand, if you decide to book directly with an operator, make sure you do enough research and read reviews to find a reputable company. The one I personally did it with and would vouch for is Sindbad Balloons.

Prices will range from USD 30 to 80 depending on several factors—the most significant of all is the time of your selected ride. There are 2 rides that take place every morning: the sunrise trip (the more expensive one) and the second trip after sunrise (the one on the cheaper end). Prices will also vary slightly from one operator to another, and so will last-minute booking. More importantly, prices in EGP are always subject to change due to inflation.

What to Expect on the Day of the Flight

Due to the nature of the activity, the best time to do it is very early in the morning when winds are lighter and weather conditions are more stable. So, expect an early morning hotel pickup that can be as early as 3:30 AM. The exact pickup time will vary depending on your hotel’s location, the rest of your group, and your tour’s route, as well as the sunrise time during that time of the year.

• Early morning pickup: Due to the nature of the activity, the best time to do it is very early in the morning when winds are lighter and weather conditions are more stable. So, expect an early morning hotel pickup that can be as early as 3:30 AM. The exact pickup time will vary depending on your hotel’s location, the rest of your group, and your tour’s route, as well as the sunrise time during that time of the year.
• Check-in and briefing: Before heading out to the hot air balloons’ take-off location, your operator will gather everyone to brief them on everything. Listen to the safety instructions very carefully—they will also give you a waiver to sign, which is standard procedure. They will most likely serve you tea during that time as well if it’s included in your package.
• Boat ride across the Nile: If your hotel pickup is on the East Bank, you’ll be taken to a boat to cross over to the West Bank, as this is where the hot air balloons take off. Your briefing will probably be on the boat.
• Bus ride to the location: After arriving at the West Bank, you’ll ride mini buses to take you to your final destination where the hot air balloons take off.

• Inflating the balloon: Upon arrival at the location, you will wait for a short period as your balloon is being prepared for take off. During that time, you can watch it being prepared and inflated, as well as tens of other balloons floating around in the pink sky.
• Takeoff and flight: The takeoff is pretty seamless, and the ride itself usually takes around 45 minutes. During the flight, you’ll float over lush fields and multiple archaeological sites that your pilot will highlight.
• Landing and post-flight celebratory picture: Landing is the trickiest part—you’ll be expected to squat, not sit down, and hold on to the ropes attached to the basket so you won’t hurt yourself during impact. After landing, you can stand up and get out only when your pilot instructs you to. Afterwards, you’ll be given a certificate and enjoy a celebratory moment with the whole group, and possibly take pictures. An envelope will be passed around as well, so you can add a tip to the operators if you’d like. After seeing how these people work behind the scenes and all the picture-perfect Instagram shots, I was so appreciative of what they do. Pulling this off is not easy, and the operators I dealt with provided a quality service that was absolutely worth tipping heftily. 

Is Hot Air Ballooning in Luxor Safe?

Safety should always be your top priority, whether or not you’re traveling alone. Although incidents may have occurred in the past, they’re still very rare, so hot air ballooning in Luxor is considered safe. 

Pilots, who’ve been doing this for years, undergo extensive training and are obligated to pass exams and meet medical requirements to be licensed. All aircraft, including hot air balloons, are regulated by the Federal Aviation Authority, and all hot air balloon operators in Luxor must adhere to strict regulations set by the Egyptian Civil Aviation Authority. I’ve had a conversation with our pilot about this, and he told me that the aircrafts must be regularly checked and the pilots are frequently re-assessed from time to time, even after receiving their licenses. If they fail to pass an assessment, they might risk starting all over again.

It’s also worth noting that on days when weather conditions are poor or the wind is not ideal, hot air balloon rides are canceled. But don’t fret; your operator will give you the opportunity to reschedule or get a refund.

In spite of all of that, it’s still important to take the necessary precautions. Do your research about hot air ballooning in Luxor, and make sure you book with a reputable operator—read the reviews, check their website, and contact them if you have any questions.

Tips for an Amazing Hot Air Balloon Experience

Best Time for Hot Air Ballooning in Luxor

The best months for this activity would be between October and April for better weather conditions for both the ride and visiting Luxor in general. Luxor is in Upper Egypt (the South), which means it’s much hotter there than in the rest of the country, so I highly advise against traveling there in the summer.

What to Wear 

You want to wear comfortable shoes and clothing when you’re hot air ballooning in Luxor. Avoid dresses and skirts to easily get in and out of the basket. Dressing in layers is key, as early mornings can be chilly, but the massive flame in the balloon will make the ride itself warmer than you’d expect. Speaking of which, don’t forget to bring a hat or a beanie as that massive flame feels like a mega hooded dryer on steroids—you’ll feel the heat on your scalp!

Photography Tips

Hot air ballooning in Luxor is a magical experience you’ll definitely want to document, even if you’re not a professional photographer. I heard from several sources that professional cameras are prohibited on the ride. I didn’t see anyone being checked and denied entry beforehand, though. Also, I had 2 film cameras on me, and no one told me anything—they weren’t DSLRs, but still, I thought it was worth mentioning. 

Other than that, you’ll have plenty of time to take all the photos, selfies, and videos you want. In my case, our pilot was super friendly as well; he even turned around the hot air balloon when I asked him to so I’d be able to take a few shots on the other side. 

Motion Sickness Precautions

Generally, the ride should be very smooth, but if you’re someone who often gets motion sickness, you might want to take some extra precautions if you’re super sensitive to any kind of ride. 

• Avoid heavy meals or greasy foods before the ride to minimize nausea.
• Consider medication if needed.
• Keep your eyes on a fixed point and focus on the horizon.
• Try to stand closer to the center of the basket to avoid minimal movement near the edges. 
• Take deep breaths to try to keep yourself calm.

Is Hot Air Ballooning in Luxor Worth It? 

My final thoughts on this is that this experience is absolutely worth it! It’s usually an optional activity on tours, but I believe that it’s an Egypt bucket list experience and must be added to your itinerary. So, if you have the time and budget for this, definitely don’t skip it. If you have a fear of heights, don’t let that discourage you. I actually have a fear of open heights (not any heights), and I thought I’d be more scared or uncomfortable. However, the experience turned out to be the exact opposite and wasn’t as scary as I thought it would be. 

Before my ride, I heard from multiple people that they’d done this several times, and I didn’t get it—I thought hot air ballooning in Luxor was a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and that’s it. After I did it myself, I can safely say that I would do this again and again. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is this is absolutely worth it!
