Common Questions Solo Female Travelers Ask About What to Wear in Jordan

Given that Middle Eastern countries are on the more conservative spectrum, one of the top concerns for female travelers, especially Western ones and those traveling solo, is what they can or cannot wear. Here are some of the frequently asked questions (or different versions of “What to wear in Jordan?“) I often get when I tell others I’ve been there:

• What should girls wear in Jordan?
• Can I wear a dress to Petra?
• Can I wear short sleeves in Jordan?
• Can I wear shorts in Petra/Jordan?

So, what to wear in Jordan? For real…

Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country; however, there is no strict or formal dress code. So, even though it is a conservative country, as long as you dress moderately, you should be fine. If you take a closer look at local women, you’ll find that some may choose to cover, while others may choose to dress modestly. Other women and girls also dress in a more liberal way in certain social settings. It all comes down to a woman’s background and the environment she grew up in. And in your case as a visitor, it’s about what you’re wearing and where you’re wearing it. Some things may be completely off the table all over the country, but other things can actually be socially acceptable in more relaxed destinations or areas.

So, let’s break it down by destination.

What to wear in Amman

Amman is the capital city of Jordan, meaning you’ll be interacting with locals from different backgrounds. The general rule of thumb is to keep your knees and arms covered and try to avoid showing cleavage. That doesn’t mean that you can’t wear sleeveless tops or ripped jeans, or even dresses and skirts. You definitely can, but in nicer neighborhoods like Al Weibdeh or Rainbow street, or in more private, fancier venues, rather than Downtown, for instance.

What to wear in Petra

As Petra is probably the most touristy attraction in Jordan, it can be a more relaxed destination when it comes to dress code. Especially because there are lots of travel influencers and content creators posing in dresses, or even gowns, in front of the treasury, even though I’d recommend you’d wear something comfortable and more suitable for the location. However, Wadi Musa, the town where Petra is located, is actually a bit of a conservative place, so you need to watch out for what you wear walking around the town itself.

Like I said, Petra itself is not as strict – I personally wore biker shorts (but I wouldn’t have worn anything shorter though). You’ll be mostly hiking, and even if you take the easiest trail, the main one, it’s still better to wear something that is hiking-friendly. I talk more about what to wear and pack to Petra here.

What to wear in Aqaba

I didn’t stay in Aqaba but I made a pit stop there for a couple of hours, so I don’t have any pictures of myself on one of the beaches there, but I can assure you that your bathing suit and pair of shorts are just fine. After all, Aqaba is a beach town, so what are you expected to wear on the beach rather than beachwear?

What to wear in Wadi Rum

Wadi Rum is a desert, so rather than focusing on what to wear in that sense, you want to see what’s desert weather-friendly. In the desert, light colors and breathable fabrics, like linen, are your best friends. If you’re at your luxury camp, you can wear all loose breathable outfits during the day, but if you’re hiking, you want to wear something comfortable that also protects your skin from the sun. What to Wear in Jordan: The Ultimate Packing List

Your packing list will vary according to which destinations you’ll be visiting exactly, the season in which you’re traveling, and the number of days, of course. All of these are deciding factors to help you figure out what to wear in Jordan. So, I’ll assume that you’re traveling in the spring or fall (which are the best times to visit Jordan) and that you’ll be going to the main destinations mentioned before. As for the count, I’ll leave that for you.

What’s the Jordan Pass?

For those who aren’t already familiar with the Jordan Pass, it’s a sightseeing package that Jordan Tourism Board has put together for tourists to enjoy a hassle-free visit to the country, enabling them to save time and money.

The Jordan Pass gives you access to over 30 tourist attractions. Additionally, it waives your tourist visa entry fees if you purchase it before entering the country and stay for at least 3 nights.

Attractions Covered by the Jordan Pass

The Jordan Pass covers entry to over 30 sites in the country; be it museums, castles, or UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Jordan Pass Packages

All pass-holders get their visa fees waived, free entry to 30+ attractions, as well as free downloadable brochures. However, there are 3 available packages to choose from, and the main difference is how many days the pass grants you to visit Petra:

• Jordan Wanderer – grants you a 1-day visit to Petra (JOD 70)
• Jordan Explorer – grants you a 2-day visit to Petra (JOD 75)
• Jordan Expert – grants you a 3-day visit to Petra (JOD 80)

Is the Jordan Pass worth it? Here’s my verdict

Now you’re probably thinking that this is a great catch, but is it really worth it?

Theoretically, yes, it sounds like it would save you time and money – mostly on the Petra entry ticket. However, realistically speaking, it really depends on your nationality, because in my case, it would’ve actually cost me more money if I’d purchased it.

You see, Egyptians DO NOT need a visa to enter Jordan, and in most cases, the entry ticket to attraction sites for Arabs is a little bit more expensive than locals’ but still way cheaper than other foreigners’. As for the Petra ticket, there may not be a multi-day ticket for Arabs, but still, I still saved A LOT of money because the 1-day ticket for Arabs costs 10 JOD while the regular one costs 50 JOD.

So, only because I’m Egyptian, I saved the following:

• 40 JOD on Petra
• 40 JOD for the visa
• + a miscellaneous amount on a few random sites

The total of the visa and Petra visit alone amounts to 80 JOD, and when you compare that to the available Jordan Pass packages, it would’ve been ridiculous for me to buy it.

So, does that mean that the Jordan Pass is a SCAM?

NO, IT’S NOT!

Again, it depends on your nationality. Before investing in the Jordan Pass, check if you need a visa to enter Jordan. If you do need a visa, then the main deciding factor would be the Petra ticket, and if you’re neither Jordanian nor of another Arab nationality, then you won’t be eligible for a discount. In this case, the Jordan Pass makes a lot of sense.

A 1-day Petra ticket will cost you 50 JOD, and then the visa will cost you another 40 – that’s a total amount of 90 JOD. By buying the Jordan Wanderer pass, you actually save money – 20 JOD+ since you won’t have to pay entry fees at other attractions like Wadi Rum or Jerash.

But first, why Amman?

I’ve had Jordan on my radar for so long but I was more excited for the desert adventures – I didn’t have much expectations of Amman itself, to be honest. Surprisingly, from the minute I set foot out of the airport, the good energy came rushing in, stealing my heart right away.

The thing I loved the most about Jordan’s capital is that it’s a very aesthetically pleasing city to walk around –or “hike” to be more accurate with my wording. There’s always a surprise in every corner or staircase – be it a mural, a pretty building, or a breathtaking view.

Top 8 Things to Do in Amman

#1 Go for a walk around the city

Yes, that’s right! Exploring the city on foot is one of the best things to do in Amman. As I said, it could be a very pleasant experience; from street art to breathtaking views, there’s always a surprise on every corner. Plus, it could be a great way to familiarize yourself with the city on day one, which is something I usually do whenever I go to a new destination. By day three, I was able to navigate my way without having to use Google Maps! Just don’t forget to wear comfortable walking shoes.

Here are some of my favorite areas to go for a walk:

• Al Weibdeh
• Rainbow street
• Downtown
• Some parts of Al Abdali (those closer to Downtown and Al Weibdeh)

#2 Walk Around Rainbow Street

Speaking of pleasant walks, you need to go explore the famed Rainbow Street! It’s one of the very few spots in the city that is walking-friendly, as it’s flat and also aesthetically pleasing. There are lots of rooftop cafés and dining options in the area, too, so it’s a win-win whether you go during the day or in the evening.

#3 Explore Al Weibdeh

If you’re an artsy person, then you’ll definitely enjoy a stroll around Al Weibdeh, which is hands down one of Amman’s coolest neighborhoods.

There are lots of small shops, coffee shops, murals, and a few hidden gems here and there. It’s a quiet, urban addition to the city away from the hustle and bustle. It’s also where you’ll most likely find other expats hanging out, along with the local thinkers and artists.

#4 Catch the sunset at the Amman Citadel

The highlight of things to do in Amman is definitely visiting its iconic citadel, which is probably on your list anyway. But did you know it’s one of the best places to witness a beautiful sunset, too?

Skip the morning queues and head there a couple of hours before sunset. You’ll have enough time to explore the archaeological site, snap a few shots for the gram, and take in the magical golden hour.

• Mid-May – Aug (8:00 – 20:00)

#5 Visit the Old Signs of Amman Museum

One of the city’s hidden gems, located in Downtown, is the Old Signs of Amman museum, also known as the Armat Museum.

As the name suggests, the place displays a wide collection of old shop signs from the streets of the Jordanian capital, which date back to 40 years ago. The purpose of this non-profit project is to preserve an integral part of Amman’s history and identity. If you’re a vintage lover, then this place is definitely worth a visit!

#6 Visit the Duke’s Diwan

If you fancy a trip back in time, then the Duke’s Diwan is definitely one of the coolest things to do in Amman. Situated in the heart of Downtown Amman, the Duke’s Diwan is the capital city’s oldest building open to the public.

It was first built in 1924 as Amman’s very first post office, which later became the main office of the Ministry of Finance. Then, in 1948, it was turned into the Haifa Hotel. Fast-forward around 50 years, and it was bought by the Duke of Mukheiheh, Mamdouh Bisharat –hence, the name.

The building, the furniture, the interiors, and even the doors and windows at the Duke’s Diwan are well-preserved and pretty much untouched. It’s both aesthetically pleasing and an interesting look back at traditional Jordanian houses.

#7 Explore West Amman

West Amman is a lot more modern than the Eastern part of the city. It’s not that it’s any prettier, but it’s just different, and it’s interesting to get to see another side of the city. One of the nicest places I’ve stumbled upon was Swefieh Village, which is a cool urban outdoor space for shopping, dining, and entertainment. I definitely think this is one of the most underrated things to do in Amman.

Other Touristy Things to Do in Amman

If you still want to do the whole touristy thing, there are still more sites and attractions you could visit, such as:

• The Roman Theater
• The Jordan Museum
• King Abdullah Mosque
• Al Husseini Mosque

Best Restaurants in Amman

The Levant is known for its mouthwatering cuisines, and due to their shared similarities, there are some differences. And since Lebanese food is one of my all-time favorite cuisines, I found it interesting to try out Jordanian cuisine too.

Actually, one of the best things to do in Amman is to explore the culture through its traditional dishes. But before we delve straight into my restaurant recommendations, here’s a list of all the foods you must try when in Jordan:

How to Get Around?

The best way to commute in Amman is via Uber or Careem, or a regular taxi, only if the meter is working. Renting a car in the city isn’t really practical as it’s not cost-efficient and it’s also not easy to find a parking spot. On the other hand, Uber is pretty cheap there; most of the time, it’ll only cost you around JOD 1-2 for a ride.

My GOLDEN tip? If it’s a walking distance, WALK IT! As I previously mentioned, Amman is a very scenic city. And even though walking around the city can be rather strenuous, it’s a great workout. Trust me, you won’t regret it, and if you’re a photographer, you’re welcome! Just make sure to pack comfortable walking shoes.

Jordan is a small country, and given that Amman is quite central, it’s in close proximity to plenty of destinations that are worth exploring. So, if you ever feel like renting a car or hiring a driver to embark on a new adventure beyond the capital, here are a few ideas:

• Madaba, Mount Nebo, Wadi Mujib, and the Dead Sea.
