I’ve had my fair share of chaotic arrivals after a long flight; arriving late at night, trying to navigate a foreign transport system, or struggling with an internet connection in an attempt to request an Uber. That’s why, in this read, I’ll walk you through your different options for getting to your accommodation from the airport, challenges that we often face as solo travelers, and how to overcome them safely. So, don’t make the same mistake of forgetting that part of trip planning, and read along.

Most Common Airport Transfers

In most destinations, there are 3 common ways to reach your accommodation from the airport:

• Public transport: That’s often the cheapest way to get to your hotel, but it can be quite a hassle as airport shuttles or trains often involve transfers and hauling luggage. Not to mention that not all airports or destinations, like Paris or Faro, have train and metro connections, so it’s not always an option.
• Regular taxis: Cabs are usually available immediately, but they’re such a hassle. Aside from the nagging taxi drivers, in most destinations you’ll have to negotiate the fare and, most likely, end up overpaying. 
• Ride-hailing apps: This option is more convenient than the previous ones in terms of comfort and peace of mind. However, drivers aren’t always nearby, and there’s always the risk of surge pricing and long waits. Not to mention that you need to have an internet connection upon arrival. So downloading an eSIM beforehand is an absolute must.

The Real Problem

Different drawbacks of each airport transfer option aren’t the actual challenge. Everything has its pros and cons, but the real problem is that when you’ve just spent 10 hours on a plane, you have more to worry about. 

You’re exhausted, potentially jetlagged, carrying luggage, and all that you probably care about is getting to your hotel and lying on a comfortable bed. This scenario gets extra stressful when you arrive in a city you don’t know late at night, especially if you’re a solo female traveler like yours truly. At this point, safety becomes your number one priority. That’s why you’ll find yourself prioritizing convenience over saving a few dollars.  

The Solution: How Pre-Booked Airport Transfers Come to the Rescue

That’s where pre-booked airport transfers come into play. Just like you’ll plan every other aspect of your trip in advance, you can also book your airport taxi before you even leave your home.  

By pre-booking airport transfers, your driver will be able to track your flight, wait for your arrival, and they’ll have previous knowledge of your final destination. And the best part is that the fare is fixed beforehand. So, instead of worrying about finding transportation after a long, tiring flight, your vacation will simply begin the moment you set foot out of the terminal.

Sure, it’s pricier than other transportation methods. But personally, this is one of those travel expenses I’m willing to splurge on when I know I’ll be arriving late at night, especially if it’s after a long-haul flight or if I’m arriving at a destination where extra caution is required. 

How to Book Airport Transfers?

Of all companies that offer airport transfers, these are the ones that I trust the most: KiwiTaxi and Booking.com.

Airport Transfers via KiwiTaxi

KiwiTaxi is one of the most trusted platforms for booking airport transfers in the travel industry, in my opinion. When you compare rides from Cairo International Airport to Downtown Cairo on both platforms, the fare is much cheaper on Booking. So, it’s either they’re expanding into this market with more than competitive prices, or because of the company’s size, they’re able to keep their prices low. 

Airport Transfers FAQs Answered 

How do airport transfers work?

All you have to do is book online, and you’ll receive a confirmation email with your ride details. Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting for you with a nameplate and the designated meeting spot, and they’ll take you to your accommodation. 

Are airport transfers cheaper than taxis?

Unfortunately, airport transfers are not always cheaper than taxis or even ride-hailing services. Depending on the destination, your ride can be quite expensive, but under certain circumstances, it can be worth it for safety purposes. Airport transfers on Booking.com are sometimes cheaper than KiwiTaxi, though. 

Are airport transfers available 24/7?

Yes, you can schedule an airport transfer at any time. This is one of its biggest advantages, as it guarantees a safe ride at late hours. 

Will the driver wait if my flight is late?

An additional fee often applies if extra waiting time is involved. In case of flight delays, the driver usually tracks your flight and adjusts accordingly. Terms and conditions may slightly differ depending on which platform you book through, so make sure you double-check while booking. 

Can I cancel my airport transfer?

Yes, you can cancel your booking free of charge as long as you do so 24 hours before your scheduled pick-up time.

Final Thoughts

The first hour of your trip basically sets the tone for the entirety of it. So, after weeks, or maybe months, of planning itineraries and booking flights and stays, the last thing you want is to start your vacation by haggling over taxi fares. And waiting for a ride or trying to figure out a foreign country’s public transportation while exhausted and carrying luggage are just as bad.

About Lion’s Head

One of the most iconic mountains in Cape Town is Lion’s Head, which is located in the Table Mountain National Park. You know that pointed mountain in the backdrop of many Cape Town astonishing landscapes? That’s the one. 

Even though Lion’s Head is situated at only 669 meters above sea level, it’s such a rewarding hike. It’s steeper than expected, packed with chains and ladders near the summit, and involves some scrambling. All of this makes the hike a bit challenging, but super rewarding, especially after you take the first look at the mind-blowing 360° ocean views at the summit. When I hiked the mountain, it was a bit cloudy, but it was just as surreal as it is on a clear day. 

Lion’s Head Trail Options

When deciding whether or not hiking Lion’s Head is for you, it’s important to know that there are 2 different routes to choose from: the Chains Route and the Spiral Route. 

• The Chains Route: This is the main route I was telling you about; the one that features scrambling and metal chains and ladders. It’s steeper and includes more exposure to open heights, but it’s more direct and more adventurous. 
• The Spiral Route: In the meantime, there’s another trail that bypasses the obstacles in the other one, but it takes a longer time to hike. This option is a more ideal one for less experienced hikers, more anxious travelers, or those with a fear of heights. However, it’s worth mentioning that I hiked the Chains Route despite my fear of open heights, which made it extra fun and rewarding. But more on that later. 

Is Lion’s Head Worth It?

PRO TIP: If you’re planning your Cape Town itinerary, it’s worth staying nearby so you can reach the trailhead before sunrise (if this is when you’ll be hiking).

Where to Stay in Cape Town for Lion’s Head

Gardens

If hiking in Cape Town is your top priority, then Gardens would be an incredibly convenient place to stay. It’s one of the closest neighborhoods to the main trails of both Lion’s Head and Table Mountain; just minutes away from the trailheads. This way, if you’re planning for a sunrise hike specifically, you don’t have to worry about traffic. 

Where to Stay in Gardens? Here are my top picks:

Camps Bay

On the other hand, if you want to wake up to an oceanfront view of Lion’s Head, then Camps Bay should be your top choice. The postcard-like views are absolutely stunning, but it’s also worth noting that it’s a pricey area to stay in.

Sea Point & Green Point

From a strictly travel perspective, Sea Point and Green Point are 2 of the best neighborhoods to stay in Cape Town, especially for solo travelers like me. I personally stayed in Green Point during my trip. They’re both known for their high safety and for being social hubs for travelers, making them a great starting point for solo exploration. 

Where to Stay in Sea Point? Here are my top picks:

• Boutique hotel(s): Pineapple House and The Cole Boutique Hotel & Spa

How to Get to Lion’s Head

Guided tour

If you’re a solo traveler like me, I highly recommend you join a guided group trip. Not just because having a guide that knows the area and being part of a group would be much safer, but also because it’s a great way to make friends. At least that’s what I did.

There are a couple of ways to book a guided Lion’s Head hike. You can book one through your hostel, or book it online through Viator or GetYourGuide; these are the 2 booking platforms I trust the most. 

I personally went with my hostel, Never at Home; my guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. My stay there, overall, was a great and seamless one; it’s safe to say that this one’s Curls en Route-approved. 

Rental car 

If you have an international driver’s license and you’re a confident driver, renting a car in Cape Town will definitely offer you flexibility. I didn’t rent a car myself, but one of the friends I made at the hostel had rented one, and it came in handy, especially when we were staying up late. I also hired a driver with a private car and split the cost with 3 other solo travelers to go on day trips. So, it definitely came in handy throughout the whole trip to have a car. 

Uber

If you’re planning on hiking Lion’s Head on your own, which I honestly don’t really recommend, then you can simply Uber to the start of the trail. 

How to Plan Your Lion’s Head Hike

Now let’s get to the detailed planning. Before setting off, here’s what I’d recommend booking beforehand. 

Booking the hike itself

Prefer not to hike alone? This is definitely the wisest choice. Join a guided hike through Viator or GetYourGuide.

Accommodation

If you’re planning to hike Lion’s Head during sunrise or sunset, and getting there on time is a priority, then I recommend you stay somewhere nearby. Consider areas like Gardens or Camps Bay. 

Transportation

If you’re planning to explore Cape Town beyond Lion’s Head, renting a car offers the most flexibility. Otherwise, Uber is a convenient option.

eSIM

Download an eSIM before arriving so you can navigate, check the weather, and book an Uber after your hike, if needed. • Download AllTrails to easily navigate the trail in case you get lost or separated from your group, and for other useful features like trail conditions. 
• Get insured and make sure your travel insurance covers adventure travel accidents and injuries.

My Experience Hiking Lion’s Head

Most people say Table Mountain is the best hike in Cape Town, but I have to disagree. To me, hiking Lion’s Head was far more enjoyable. However, it’s worth noting that I didn’t know better while hiking Table Mountain, as I wasn’t hiking with a guide. I hiked it with a small group of solo travelers I met on my trip, and we took the main trail. Little did we know that it was supposed to be the easiest, as it wasn’t technical at all, but to me, it was incredibly boring. The entire hike felt like climbing spiral stairs, and let’s say it was both strenuous and not stimulating enough for my ADHD brain. 

On the other hand, my Lion’s Head hike was completely different. I booked a guided group hike through my hostel, because it’s safer for a solo traveler to join a group and it’s one of the best ways to meet people. 

I was there in February, so that’s considered summer in Cape Town. However, the weather forecast changed on the same day of the hike, and it was expected to be cloudy with a chance of precipitation. Our guide said that it wasn’t a high chance, so it was still safe to hike as planned, and that really was the case. The only thing that was affected was the visibility at the summit, as it was cloudy, but it was still a breathtaking sight to be above the clouds. 

It’s also worth mentioning that I didn’t go on a sunrise or sunset hike; we just did a morning hike, so the trail wasn’t crowded at all. 

Overcoming my Fear of Open Heights on Lion’s Head

I hiked Lion’s Head just a day before my birthday, so this was such a meaningful experience for me and such a core memory. Especially because I overcame all the challenging parts despite my fear of open heights!

For more context, in case you don’t already know, because I post a lot of hiking content, I’m obsessed with hiking in spite of having a fear of open heights. I only discovered this years ago by coincidence when I went rock climbing for the first time and froze on the mountain. I didn’t know back then because I don’t have a regular fear of heights, and I still don’t; it’s just open heights, so think mountains, roller coasters, etc. 

Unfortunately, it’s not just a phobia; I get physical symptoms. I often feel dizzy, anxious, and sometimes even nauseous. But since my passion for hiking grew more, I kind of developed coping mechanisms along the way, and the more I exposed myself to it. In fact, I learned one of these mechanisms on that very hike on Lion’s Head.

During our ascent, I was talking about it with a girl in my group; I always give people a heads-up before a hike just in case I get an anxiety attack, so they wouldn’t freak out. She gave me advice that might sound so silly at first, but it actually works. She told me to sing whenever I get anxious on the trail, and I’ve been doing it ever since. I have a terrible voice, but at least it entertains me, so it’s like hitting two birds with one stone.

Can beginners hike Lion’s Head?

Lion’s Head is challenging, but still doable. And if you don’t feel confident enough, you can always opt for the easier Spiral Route.

Can you hike it alone?

You absolutely can, but I don’t recommend hiking Lion’s Head solo. Even though it’s secure to an extent, and there’s signage throughout the trail, for safety reasons in case of injury, it’s not advisable. 

How long does it take to climb Lions Head, Cape Town?

Hiking Lion’s Head takes around 90 minutes on average, so the whole trip should take you 3 to 4 hours if you factor in breaks, time spent on the summit, and a slower pace. 

Is the Lion’s Head hike scary? 

It can definitely be intimidating, but as someone with a fear of open heights, it’s the good kind of scary, if that makes any sense.

What should I wear while hiking Lion’s Head?

Layering clothes is always ideal while hiking Lion’s Head; however, the exact layers depend on the season, time of day, and weather conditions. 

What is the best time to go to Lion’s Head?

The best time to hike Lion’s Head is from September to May for ideal weather.

Is it better to hike Lion’s Head or Table Mountain?

The answer to this question is highly subjective; it depends on your availability, fitness level, and goals/interests. Personally, I enjoyed the Lion’s Head hike way more than Table Mountain to the extent that I descended the latter in a cable car. 

It’s worth noting that part of that reasoning was that I made the mistake of choosing the wrong trail. The Platteklip Gorge route was basically a never-ending stone staircase, which was both strenuous and boring to me. I would’ve enjoyed other routes far more, but it’s important to note that they’re a lot more technical, and therefore, much harder.

Final Thoughts

If you’re ever in Cape Town and craving a little adventure, hiking Lion’s Head should definitely be on your bucket list, especially if you want to challenge yourself a bit. Just go with the right expectations, and you should be okay, and I guess this guide was extensive enough to at the very least set the right expectations for you.

Experiences in Egypt to Add to Your Bucket List

1. Visiting the Great Pyramids of Giza

This one might feel like stating the obvious, but as someone who was born and raised here, I can assure you that the pyramids are worth all the hype. Driving on the Ring Road and casually passing by that majestic site every now and then is something I sometimes struggle to comprehend and try not to take for granted. 

That doesn’t mean that seeing them from afar is enough, though. I highly recommend you wake up bright and early to avoid the crowds and take in all the history right at the Giza Plateau. It’s worth noting that since this is one of the most touristy sites in the world, and not just in Egypt, it could be a bit overwhelming. That’s why it’s best if you hire a tour guide or go with a local friend if you have one.

2. Giving the other pyramids the same attention

A lot of travelers think that the Great Pyramids of Giza are the only pyramids in Egypt. Well, that’s not the case. Archaeologists have identified over 100 pyramids; some of which are significantly smaller in size and others are no longer there. However, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, and their subsidiary queens’ pyramids, are not the only ones of significance. 

For off-the-beaten-path choices, I highly recommend you add Saqqara and Dahshur to your Cairo itinerary. Saqqara is where the oldest known monumental stone structure in Egypt stands, the Step Pyramid of Djoser. As for Dahshur, it’s where you’ll find the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid, among others.

3. Sailing down the Nile

The Nile River is considered Egypt’s heartbeat, life, and soul. You can experience it by either taking a short felucca ride in the city or by boarding a multi-day Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa. 

I’ve taken countless felucca rides throughout my life, but I still remember my very first time going on a Nile cruise as a child. The themed nights were cheesy but cute; my family and I made a lot of friends, but waking up to the view every morning was the biggest highlight. 

FUN FACT: In Egypt, there’s a saying about how drinking from the Nile always brings you back. While drinking straight up from the Nile is generally unsafe, you can safely do so only in Aswan right after the dam, as it purifies the water. I’m living proof of that. 

4. Hot air ballooning in Luxor

This is not just one of my favorite experiences in Egypt; it’s hands down one of my most unforgettable memories. When I did this on my 29th birthday, I thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but I was wrong. I would absolutely do this over and over again. Floating over the lush green fields and ancient temples of Luxor at sunrise felt euphoric, despite my fear of open heights. So, if height or safety are your concerns, trust me; there’s nothing to worry about, and you’ll forget all the fear once you’re up there.

5. Going all the way to Abu Simbel

Believe it or not, I only went to Abu Simbel after 29 years of living in Egypt, even though I’ve been to Aswan multiple times. But Abu Simbel is further down south, so it often felt like going the extra mile, as it was a day trip from Aswan that required waking up before dawn. But one February, since I was already there, I decided it was time to finally visit one of the most praised ancient temples in the country.

6. Diving in the Red Sea

Egypt’s Red Sea is known for its wonderful coral reefs and incredible marine biodiversity. That’s why diving or snorkeling is one of the experiences in Egypt you just can’t miss. I still remember how astonished I was the first time I saw all sorts of vibrantly colored fish; that’s a core memory for sure. 

If you’re looking for the best destination to go to your first intro class, or get PADI-licensed, Dahab is one of the most affordable places to do so. On the other hand, if you’re a pro diver, Marsa Alam is known for being a world-class diving hub, as it’s home to an abundance of spectacular reefs as well as wild dugongs, sea turtles, and dolphins.

7. Camping in the Black and White Deserts

Another unconventional birthday trip of mine was to the Black and White Deserts. For some reason, whenever I wanted to go, it didn’t happen. So, I planned a full camping trip for me and my friends on my 27th birthday. 

The Black Desert, which is a result of ancient volcanic activity in the area, is located in the Bahariya Oasis. On the other hand, the White Desert’s distinctive nature is because the entire area used to be covered with water millions of years ago. The desert’s iconic rock formations, composed of either calcium, quartz, or limestone, were the result when the ocean retreated. I’m someone who really appreciates the great outdoors, so celebrating in a destination with such a unique landscape and otherworldly terrain was such a magical experience.

The cherry on top for me was that we went the extra mile to make this trip extra special; almost 100 miles to be more specific. That was how far we drove to reach the iconic Djara Cave, where I literally blew out my birthday candles. 

Djara Cave is a dripstone cave in the heart of the Western Desert on the Wahat road connecting Farafra Oasis to Assiut governorate. The cave dates back to around 55 million years ago and is a result of rain corrosion into the limestone. It also contains animal engravings dating back to the Neolithic period.

8. Hiking in Saint Catherine

Home of the Jebeliya tribe and Egypt’s tallest mountains, Saint Catherine is where I fell in love with hiking, despite my fear of open heights. My first-ever hike was the infamous Mount Sinai, where Moses is believed to have received the 10 commandments. The journey to the summit, paved with breathtaking scenery, was both adventurous and spiritual at the same time.

Saint Catherine is where you can enjoy unforgettable, if not the best, hiking trails and experiences in Egypt, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast like me. After Mount Sinai, I kept going back for more adventures and views, and I have to say, Saint Catherine never ceased to amaze me.

9. Floating in the salt lakes of Siwa

Believe it or not, the first time I got inside one of these salt lakes, I didn’t even know how to swim. I was dead scared because I was water-phobic at the time (I’m currently working on it), and the lakes were incredibly deep. But you’ll float no matter what; the super high salinity in the water does that, just like in the Dead Sea in Jordan. 

Then when you add the Instagrammable turquoise waters, nestled between crystal-shiny salt mines, you’ll get it. That’s what truly makes floating in the salt lakes one of the most magical experiences in Egypt. It’s what makes the long ride to Siwa worth every second.

Final Thoughts

Reliving these memorable experiences in Egypt through telling you about them made me think about how lucky I am to be surrounded by so much beauty and magic. Living in Egypt can be taken for granted far more often than it should be, but I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge how much I’m grateful for each one of these experiences. And I truly hope you get to live them yourself as you turn your dream trip to Egypt into a reality.

After traveling to El Gouna numerous times for both work and leisure, I’ve stayed in parts of town, tried and tested several hotels, and visited my friends at many more. So, in this guide, I’ll first walk you through the best areas I think you should look at first when booking accommodation, before sharing with you my favorite hotels in town. 

If you’re planning a trip to Egypt’s Red Sea and want to explore a gem that isn’t as touristy as Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, I highly recommend El Gouna. As an Egyptian, this is one of my favorite beach towns in the country for its endless activities, turquoise lagoons, vibrant nightlife, and top-notch restaurants. And as a solo female traveler, I can vouch that it’s one of the safest destinations in Egypt and the entire world.

About El Gouna

Located only 25 kilometers away from Hurghada, El Gouna is a privately-owned town developed by Orascom Development Holding in the late 80s. In my opinion, it’s a gem you can’t miss if you’re planning a trip to Egypt’s Red Sea coast. Personally, I prefer it over tourist-heavy beach towns like its neighboring Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh.

As an Egyptian traveler, this is one of my favorite beach towns in the country thanks to its endless activities, turquoise lagoons, vibrant nightlife, and top-notch restaurants. And as a solo female traveler, I can vouch that it’s one of the safest destinations I’ve ever traveled to; totally not biased, I promise. 

To start off by setting the right expectations, it’s worth mentioning that the town is considered a luxury destination, so hotels in El Gouna can be pricier end of travel. However, you’ll still find lots of options suitable for different budgets, ranging from apartment-style stays to luxury resorts.

Where to Stay: Understanding Areas (Best Hotels in El Gouna Included)

Unlike other neighborhood guides like the Cairo or Paris ones, this one’s a bit challenging, as El Gouna isn’t divided into neighborhoods the way a bigger city is. Sure, there are neighborhoods like Nuba or Siba El Gouna, but these are residential areas where travelers don’t really stay. Many visitors refer to other areas in terms of marinas, beaches, or resort districts. So, I’ll be framing places to stay as “areas” rather than “neighborhoods”.

That said, hotels in El Gouna are scattered across town. So, in this section, I’ll be focusing on the top areas I think you should be looking at first as a first-time visitor. After years of traveling to El Gouna for both work and leisure, these areas offer the best balance of location, accessibility, dining options, and, of course, accommodation choices.

1. Downtown

As the name suggests, this is the heart and center of El Gouna. This is hands down the most convenient area to stay. I personally love staying there as there are supermarkets, restaurants, banks, and everyday essentials within walking distance. Not to mention that there are not one, but two tuk-tuk stops there, so getting to other areas isn’t a hassle at all. So, if you want to be close to everything without worrying about commuting, this is definitely the place for you. 

• Vibe/Character: Central, lively, and walkable.  
• Nearby attractions: The Clubhouse, El Gouna Go Karts, El Gouna Padel, G-Space, and El Gouna Library.
• Transportation: Tuk-tuks are always available. 
• Best for: Solo travelers, first-time visitors, digital nomads, and anyone who wants to stay somewhere central. 
• Best hotels in El Gouna: Cook’s Club El Gouna and Sultan Bey. 
• Solo travel score: 10/10

2. Abu Tig Marina  

If you’re looking for postcard-worthy views and a lively atmosphere, Abu Tig Marina is hard to beat. This is the hot spot and one of the most vibrant areas in El Gouna, especially at night. Restaurants, bars, and of course, yachts all lining the lavish marina. 

P.S. To be honest, though, this area is too loud for me, so if you need a good night’s sleep like me, it might not be for you. 

• Vibe/Character: Upscale, lively, and social. 
• Nearby attractions: Abu Tig Marina Promenade, yacht harbor, restaurants, bars, shops, Moods Beach, and the New Marina. 
• Transportation: Tuk-tuks are always available.
• Best for: Foodies, young travelers, and nightlife enthusiasts. 
• Best hotels in El Gouna: Turtle’s Inn, Captain’s Inn, Ali Pasha, and Three Corners Ocean View. 
• Solo travel score: 9/10

3. Beachfront (Mangroovy Area) 

If your ideal vacation revolves around beach days, you might want to consider staying in a beachfront hotel, specifically in the Mangroovy Area, as it’s close to many attractions, as well as access to sandy beaches and beach clubs. 

What’s tricky about finding accommodation there is that there aren’t many hotel options, especially ones within a lower budget. You’ll have to find a studio or apartment through Mangroovy Residence or Lemon Spaces serviced apartments, or if you’re a luxury traveler, you can stay at one of the nearby upscale hotels. 

• Vibe/Character: Luxurious, beach-focused, and laid-back. 
• Nearby attractions: Mangroovy Beach, The Smokery Beach, KBC El Gouna Kiteschule, and Fanadir Marina. 
• Transportation: You can request a tuk-tuk through your hotel, or a ride-hailing app like Uber or Careem. 
• Best for: Beach lovers and luxury travelers. 
• Best hotels in El Gouna: DoubleTree by Hilton Mangroovy and Casa Cook El Gouna. 
• Solo travel score: 7/10

4. Mansions Area

As a frequent-goer, this is one of the residential areas I like to stay in as it’s easy to find affordable apartment-style accommodations there. It might seem a bit secluded at first, but it’s actually a short drive to the center. I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t have a car, though. However, if you’re renting a car or if you don’t mind waiting for an Uber tuk-tuk to arrive, the affordability of the accommodations there is definitely worth it. You can find plenty of apartments and studios in G-Cribs, Scarab, or any of the nearby residential compounds on Booking.com to compare. 

• Vibe/Character: Quiet, residential, and budget-friendly.  
• Nearby attractions: El Gouna Festival Plaza, El Gouna Padel, and El Gouna Go Karts.
• Transportation: Best with a car. Even though tuk-tuks’ availability makes getting around super easy, having a car in El Gouna would be a huge blessing, especially if you’re planning on traveling to Hurghada, Soma Bay, or Sahl Hasheesh. Compare car rentals on Expedia, as it offers plenty of options in the area.
• Best for: Budget travelers, digital nomads, travelers who prioritize value over location. 
• Best stays in El Gouna: G-Cribs and Scarab. 
• Solo travel score: 8/10

Best Hotels in El Gouna for Solo Travelers

Although the areas mentioned above are where I’d recommend first-time visitors begin their search, like I previously highlighted, hotels in El Gouna are scattered throughout the town. Some of my favorite hotels in El Gouna didn’t even make it in the previous section. That’s why the following roundup will be more hotel-centered rather than area-focused. 

Given that El Gouna is an upscale destination, it wouldn’t make sense to categorize accommodations according to their budget. Instead, I’ll be categorizing them based on the level of luxury. 

Kindly note that I’ve either stayed at, visited, had friends stay there, or extensively researched the following hotels. There are far more hotels in El Gouna; the following are just my personal favorites and those I think are worth staying at as a solo traveler.  

3-Star Hotels in El Gouna

• Turtle’s Inn – The most budget-friendly hotel in El Gouna, in the heart of the Abu Tig Marina.
• Captain’s Inn – One of the best-value hotels in the marina, perfect for those who want to stay in the heart of the action.

4-Star Hotels in El Gouna

• Ali Pasha – A charming boutique hotel overlooking the Abu Tig Marina, with excellent walkability and dining options.
• Sultan Bey – Great for travelers who appreciate lagoon views and direct beach access at Zeitouna Beach via shuttle boat. 
• Cook’s Club – An adults-only hotel, perfect for younger solo travelers who enjoy a social setting, boho-chic interiors, and poolside parties. 
• Three Corners Ocean View – An adults-only seaside resort, offering proximity to the marina while maintaining a quieter atmosphere. 

P.S. Don’t stay at the other Three Corners hotel, named Rihana – I’ve personally had a terrible experience with their staff while visiting a friend.

5-Star Hotels in El Gouna 

• Steigenberger Golf Resort – A luxury resort, on the more affordable end, overlooking the lagoons and golf course. 
• Movenpick Resort and Spa – One of the biggest beachfront resorts in El Gouna, with multiple pools and facilities.

Luxury Getaways in El Gouna

• Casa Cook – An adults-only boutique hotel known for its pretty minimalist aesthetics and tranquility. 
• The Chedi – One of El Gouna’s newest luxury resorts. 
• La Maison Bleue – One of the prettiest boutique hotels in the entire country. The luxury mansion is an ideal romantic getaway, but might be worth a night for travelers who are keen on getting Instagrammable shots. 

Accommodation Tips for Solo Female Travelers

• Read the most recent reviews, preferably those within the last 6 months.
• Prioritize properties with 24-hour reception.
• Arrange airport transfers if you’re arriving late at night.
• Share accommodation details with someone back home.
• Save your accommodation details on Google Maps and write them down on a piece of paper in case something happens to your phone. 
• Prioritize comfort and convenience over price. 

P.S. El Gouna is generally one of the safest destinations in Egypt, and as a solo female traveler myself, I can definitely confirm that. 

Tips for Deciding Where to Stay in El Gouna

1. Factor in proximity to amenities and available modes of transportation

Everyone would love to stay somewhere close to as many amenities and attractions as possible, but how central do you need your accommodation to be? Consider whether you prefer restaurants and amenities within walking distance or a short tuk-tuk ride. Also think about whether you prefer to stay somewhere where there’s an abundance of tuk-tuks, or waiting for one is not an issue for you. Do you even need a tuk-tuk, or will you be having a car or bicycle? These are all important questions to ask yourself before booking a hotel in El Gouna.

2. Ask yourself whether you prioritize budget or convenience 

Since solo travel is automatically more expensive, most of us try to stick to a certain budget by default. But since El Gouna is an upscale destination, it’s not budget-friendly anyway. In this case, some travelers would choose to save up as much as they can, which essentially means saving up on accommodation. On the other hand, other travelers will not care about the higher cost of accommodation since the whole trip is a splurge anyway. 

3. Consider the duration of your stay

The length of your trip will automatically impact your budget. If you’re staying for a few days, you might prefer the convenience of a hotel; however, if you’re staying for a month, you might prefer the comfort and affordability of renting a studio.

4. Think about your preferred pace and environment

El Gouna can be very lively and super relaxed at the same time. Whether you prefer both or one thing during the day doesn’t necessarily mean you would at bedtime. For instance, you might enjoy staying up late for drinks and live music at the Abu Tig Marina, but if you’re staying at the hotel upstairs, you might not get the good night’s sleep you need. So, if this is a priority for you, I highly recommend staying away from hotels in busy areas like the marina. 

Final Thoughts

One of the things I love the most about El Gouna is that it’s easy to get around, even if you don’t have a car. Tuk-tuks are widely available, affordable, and most areas are only a short ride away from one another. So, don’t feel any pressure to pick the ‘perfect location’; the majority of the hotels in El Gouna are top-notch anyway. 

What I would stress, though, is that if you find a hotel you love, try to book it sooner rather than later. El Gouna is one of the most popular beach destinations for Egyptians, with year-round events and favorable weather. That means: the best rooms sell out fast.

Cairo vs. Giza: What’s the Difference?

Before diving into the neighborhood breakdown, I thought I’d address this first, as many first-time visitors don’t understand this and often get confused. A lot of tourists often think that Giza is a neighborhood in Cairo, where the pyramids are located. While the Great Pyramids of Giza are indeed located in Giza, it’s not a neighborhood.

The truth is: Giza and Cairo are two different governorates. However, due to urban overlap, they’re physically merged, only separated by the Nile, and together, they make up Greater Cairo. So, being in Giza does not necessarily mean you’re in the pyramids’ area; Giza is much bigger than that. 

Travelers often stay in either governorate and get around as if they’re in one big city. Where you choose to stay highly depends on your itinerary and trip goals. Are you here just to visit the pyramids, or are you hoping to properly explore Cairo? I’ll help you figure out where to stay in Cairo in the next section.

Where to Stay in Cairo: Understanding Neighborhoods

1. Al Haram

Al Haram, which actually translates to “the pyramid” in Arabic, is the Giza neighborhood where the Great Pyramids of Giza are located. It’s divided into smaller local areas such as Hadayek El Ahram and Nazlet El Semman, which is right in front of the Sphinx, famed for its horse stables and iconic rooftop restaurants. 

Personally, I don’t usually recommend staying there, especially to those who aren’t well-traveled. Nazlet El Semman specifically is not a ghetto in the Western sense, but it’s ghetto-like as it’s a form of informal urban settlement. So, I wouldn’t say it’s unsafe because the livelihoods of the people living there highly depend on tourism. But the hustle culture and chaotic environment can be a bit intense for some; it’s definitely not for the faint of heart. Another reason why it’s not my first choice is that it’s only close to the pyramids, so if you’re planning on exploring Cairo, you’ll be spending a lot of time in traffic. 

Now you might be wondering: why even suggest staying there? Well, if you’re in Cairo for just 1 or 2 nights and the main purpose of your visit is to see the pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, then waking up to that view is absolutely worth it. My biggest tip would be to book your stay with the right expectations. 

• Vibe/Character: Chaotic, lively, and unapologetically authentic. Expect narrow streets, aggressive selling tactics, and lots of horses and camels. 
• Nearby attractions: The Great Pyramids of Giza, the Sphinx, and the Grand Egyptian Museum.
• Transportation: Ride-hailing is your best option.
• Best for: Bucket-list travelers or photographers, primarily visiting for the pyramids.
• Best hotels in Al Haram: Marriott Mena House, Kove Hotel by the Pyramids, Steigenberger Pyramids Cairo, Galaxy Pyramids View Inn, and Gaia Pyramids Hotel.
• Solo travel score: 7/10

2. Downtown Cairo

This is hands down one of my top recommendations, especially for solo travelers and first-time visitors. Downtown Cairo is the city’s cultural heart, with grand 19th-century architecture and history in every nook and cranny. It’s also worth mentioning that it’s home to the old Egyptian Museum and the iconic Tahrir Square.

If you’re wondering where to stay in Cairo if you want an authentic view of the city, Downtown is vibrant, historic, and full of character. Disclaimer: It can be noisy and overwhelming, but that’s just part of its charm, to be honest.

• Vibe/Character: Historic, energetic, authentic, and a cultural hub.  
• Nearby attractions: Egyptian Museum, Tahrir Square, Nile Corniche, Abdeen Palace, Cairo Tower, and Old Cairo.
• Transportation: Metro or ride-hailing apps.
• Best for: History buffs, budget travelers, solo travelers, and first-time visitors who want to cover as many attractions as they can. 
• Best hotels in Downtown: Steigenberger Hotel El Tahrir Cairo, The Nile Ritz-Carlton, Mazeej Balad Boutique Hotel, Madina Hostel, and Dahab Hostel.
• Solo travel score: 8.5/10

3. Zamalek

If I had to recommend only one neighborhood, Zamalek would be it. It’s one of the best areas to stay in Cairo; it’s quite central as it’s located right across the Nile River from Downtown. Also, as a local, I can’t deny it’s one of my favorite places in the city. The upscale, cosmopolitan island is packed with trendy cafés, art galleries, bookstores, boutiques, embassies, and a whole lot of restaurants. Plus, it’s one of the very few places with green spaces; going for a walk in Zamalek is just a wonderful experience. 

• Vibe/Character: Lush, artsy, and cosmopolitan. 
• Nearby attractions: Cairo Tower, Nile Corniche, Cairo Opera House, the Egyptian Museum, and Downtown Cairo. 
• Transportation: Ride-hailing apps. 
• Best for: Solo travelers, digital nomads, foodies, and arts and culture lovers. 
• Best hotels in Zamalek: Sofitel El Gezirah, Cairo Marriott Hotel, Novotel Cairo El Borg, The President Hotel, and Longchamps Boutique Hotel.   
• Solo travel score: 9.5/10

4. Garden City

An often overlooked option is Garden City, one of Cairo’s most elegant neighborhoods. Just as the name suggests, it’s another of the city’s very few green neighborhoods. It’s home to embassies, historic villas, and luxury hotels with astonishing Nile views. It’s also located right next to Downtown Cairo, so it’s quite central, which makes exploring the city easy. 

But why stay there and not in Downtown or Zamalek? Best known for its quiet and much slower pace, Garden City is a great place to stay if you want proximity to attractions but would rather have peace of mind over the hustle and bustle of the city center. 

• Vibe/Character: Lush, quiet, elegant, and centrally located.
• Nearby attractions: Nile Corniche, the Egyptian Museum, and Cairo Tower. 
• Transportation: Ride-hailing apps.
• Best for: Luxury travelers and solo travelers looking for a quieter stay. 
• Best hotels in Garden City: Four Seasons Nile Plaza, Kempinski Nile Hotel, and InterContinental Cairo Semiramis. 
• Solo travel score: 9/10

5. Maadi

If you’re wondering where to stay in Cairo if you’re staying for a long period of time, Maadi is easily the best place to stay. And no, I’m not being biased because it’s my home base; the charming suburb, founded in the early 1900s, simply deserves it. 

The southern suburb is not geographically central like Downtown or Zamalek, but it’s still somehow centrally located. Downtown is 30 minutes away, New Cairo is 15 or 20 minutes away, and the Giza Necropolis is 30 minutes away, which in Cairo time is considered great. If you are a first-time visitor visiting for just a few days, you might want to stay somewhere more central, but if you’re staying for a longer time, Maadi would make the perfect base. It’s green, walkable, and best known for its international community, where you’ll feel right at home. 

• Vibe/Character: Lush, slow-paced, walkable, social, and cosmopolitan.
• Nearby attractions: Nile Corniche, Wadi Degla Protectorate, and the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. 
• Transportation: Metro or ride-hailing apps.

• One month in Cairo? Hands down Maadi.
• Working remotely? Maadi or Zamalek.
• Returning visitor? Maybe New Cairo or Sheikh Zayed to explore the suburbs or different parts of the city that are non-touristy. 

Tips for Deciding Where to Stay in Cairo

1. Consider your itinerary first

One of the biggest mistakes first-time visitors make when deciding where to stay in Cairo is choosing their hotel before figuring out what they actually want to see or do. If seeing the Great Pyramids of Giza is your priority, then maybe staying nearby is worth it. On the other hand, if exploring Cairo is your main goal, then staying somewhere central like Downtown or Zamalek makes more sense. And if you want easy access to restaurants, cafés, and nightlife, then Zamalek is your best option.

2. Don’t underestimate Cairo’s traffic

A hotel may seem close to some attractions on the map, but Cairo’s brutal traffic can turn a short ride into a much longer journey. So, instead of focusing only on distance, consider how frequently you will be crossing the city. Choosing a place to stay that’s in close proximity to most points of interest will save you hours.

3. Decide between the local atmosphere and convenience

Some neighborhoods offer a more authentic glimpse into daily life in Cairo. On the other hand, other neighborhoods are much quieter, more modern, and better suited for international travelers. Think about what you prefer more: would you rather be surrounded by the bustling sounds of Cairo, or do you prefer a more polished environment with easier access to modern amenities?

4. Consider how much walking you plan on doing

Unlike many European destinations, Cairo is not really a walkable city. Aside from its vast size and how attractions are spread out, pavements are often inconsistent, and streets can be super busy. If being able to walk around is a priority, then maybe you should consider staying in a neighborhood like Zamalek or Maadi. 

5. Think about your preferred pace

Some neighborhoods are quite vibrant with a bustling environment, whether it’s day or not, while others are noticeably much calmer. If you prefer staying in the heart of the street action, then maybe Downtown or parts of Zamalek are for you. However, if you’d rather stay somewhere quieter, then maybe you should opt for places like Garden City or Maadi.

Airalo Review: My Experience With Airalo

I’ve been using Airalo on my solo trips for a little over 4 years now, and I’ve tested it in various destinations across Europe and the SWANA region. 

When I first downloaded the app, it didn’t take me long to figure out how it worked. Airalo’s interface is user-friendly, and the setup process is pretty straightforward. They even offered a step-by-step guide, as well as a video tutorial on the app that you can follow to easily install and activate your eSIM.

As a solo female traveler, reliability was an important factor, as I often needed to stay connected to the internet for safety and navigation. Most of the time, the coverage was absolutely amazing; sometimes even better than physical eSIMs. For instance, I had trouble topping up my physical SIM card in Jeddah, so downloading Airalo saved me big time. And in Dubai, downloading Airalo beforehand allowed me to actually use Facebook Messenger. 

The only time I faced any technical difficulties was during my trip to Portugal, but that was mainly due to two reasons. Also, I was traveling to attend AfroNation, and given the enormous amount of travelers in The Algarve there at the time, the occasional network failures were inevitable. For complete transparency of this Airalo review, it’s worth mentioning that their tech support was pretty helpful but not super responsive at first. Other than that, the rest of my experiences in other destinations went smoothly.

Hidden behind the gates of exclusive luxury resorts and private communities lies an entire universe of crystal-clear turquoise waters, trendy beach clubs, and summer hotspots. This whole world, despite its popularity, remains largely unknown to international travelers, but I’m here to do the heavy lifting for you because you won’t find any similar breakdown of this Sahel experience elsewhere.

Plan Your Trip to the North Coast, Egypt (TLDR)

Understanding Sahel: All About the North Coast, Egypt

First things first, what is Sahel?

Simply put, “Sahel” is short for “El Sahel El Shamaly”, which means “the North Coast” in Egyptian Arabic. 

As I mentioned earlier, the Mediterranean coastline stretches from Alexandria to Marsa Matrouh. For a little over 1,000 KM (650+ miles), gated communities line white-sand beaches, overlooking the clearest and bluest water you’ll ever see. Picture a gigantic summer playground, featuring trendy beach clubs by day and wild nightlife by night; except it’s spread across a vast collection of beach communities rather than a single town like Dahab or El Gouna. 

What makes this a truly hidden, yet not so hidden, gem is that the crowd is predominantly Egyptian. It’s not really considered a destination, but rather a summer lifestyle for the privileged, or a weekend escape from the big city’s hustle and bustle. 

Which takes us to 2 important points to discuss: when to visit and understanding the unique social culture of the North Coast, Egypt.

Best Time to Visit the North Coast, Egypt

Unlike other beach destinations in the country like Dahab or El Gouna, the North Coast, Egypt, is not a year-round destination; it operates only in the summer months. 

Peak season is from June to September, specifically when schools shut down and the official summer break starts, ending the season right before the Back to School week. So, for the full-on Sahel experience, for the beach clubs, the concerts, sporting events, and the whole shebang, this is when to visit. 

However, if you’re visiting during that time, you need to know that prices will be incredibly steep. That’s why I recommend booking your stay in advance to benefit from better rates. 

Weather-wise, though, you could still visit a couple of weeks before or after the Sahel season begins and ends. Rates will be cheaper, but it’s also important to note that services may be less available. For example, some restaurants, gas stations, and other service providers may not be operating off-season. It is still doable, though; I just came back from Sahel literally a week ago. I spent the Eid vacation there, the weather was great, and enough services were available to get by. 

The “Good” and “Evil” Sahels Explained 

“Good Sahel” and “Evil Sahel” are terms that locals use to refer to 2 completely different parts (and sides) of the North Coast, Egypt. Personally, I hate using these terms as I think they’re classist as it can get. But sadly, classism is the form of discrimination you’ll notice the most in Egypt. It is, however, the best way I can try to convey the core essence of the unique Sahel culture. 

Understanding the difference between these 2 sides of the coastline is the key to understanding the social phenomenon that makes Sahel both loved yet also heavily criticized.

The first and simplest distinction is that Good Sahel is the old Sahel, closer to Alexandria and up until El Alamein, shortly after the Hammam toll gate. Evil Sahel is basically anything that comes after that. But the difference is way more than a geographical distinction; it’s an entire cultural contrast. 

The Good Sahel (el Sahel el tayyeb) is as simple as the good old days can get. Mornings feature swimming through the crashing waves, building sandcastles, snacking on Freska (an Egyptian beach-only wafer treat) or clams, and repeat. As for the traditional Good Sahel post-beach meal, it’s macaroni with red sauce and breaded chicken. Following this sunny day, and trying to wash the sand stuck all over your body, entertainment options are limited. You’ll either get together with your group and play board games or card games or head to the resort’s entertainment center, which often only comprises a pool table and a ping-pong table. 

On the other hand, Evil Sahel (el Sahel el shereer) is insanely different. For starters, their gated communities are 10X more exclusive. Sure, the norm in the North Coast, Egypt, is getting access to the resort if you have a reservation inside or if you’re a property owner or if you’re visiting someone who is. However, in the latter parts of Sahel, getting access to a gated community requires a QR code. And you often wouldn’t just stick to the resort or community where you’re accommodated; you’ll want to hang out in other places, so you’ll need QR codes for these places too. Yes, it’s that complicated. 

Honestly, this is why, personally, I hate planning a trip to Sahel. There, I said it. This is probably the only place in the entire world where I leave the booking process to my friends or family (depending on who I’m traveling with). I just hate the logistical hassle that comes with the exaggerated exclusivity. That’s partly the reason why I’m here to tell you all about it, so you won’t hate yourself during the planning process. 

With the exclusivity, you can safely assume that Evil Sahel can be more superficial, status-driven, and obviously, on the pricier end. People also dress differently; unlike throwing a pair of slippers and shorts on your swimsuit in the Good Sahel, Evil Sahel often requires traveling with an entire wardrobe. People “dress up” just to go to the beach club. 

Moving on to the hang-out spots, if you’re looking for promenades lined with cafés and restaurants, commercial areas, and a wild nightlife scene, Evil Sahel is your go-to. I’ll go more in-depth regarding this later on. 

Personally, I love both. I know I might have made the Evil Sahel sound so… evil, but I don’t think it makes you a bad person to want both kinds of fun. I’m both a party animal and a nature lover at heart. So, when I want to unwind, I’ll hit the older parts of the North Coast, Egypt, but when I want to venture out, party hard, and attend cool social or sporting events, the newer parts of Sahel are where I head.

Is the North Coast, Egypt, Worth Visiting?

In short, and generally speaking, yes, the North Coast, Egypt, is worth experiencing. If you’re visiting in the summer and you’ve already seen and done the basic first-time visitors’ Egypt bucket list, then Sahel is worth your time. There are pros and cons to consider, though, to know if this is the place for you. 

Pros

• Incredibly stunning beaches; some of the best in Egypt and the whole world, to be honest.
• Less touristy than the Red Sea.
• It’s a truly unique cultural experience that international travelers haven’t even scratched the surface of yet.

Cons

• It’s quite expensive.
• It’s seasonal; only doable if you’re traveling in the summer. 
• Difficult to explore without a car.
• If upscale experiences or nightlife aren’t your thing, it’s not for you.

The Geography: Where to Stay in the North Coast, Egypt

Areas Explained

As I mentioned before, the North Coast, Egypt, is not a single destination like other ones across the country. Non-Egyptians often get confused because everyone says things like Marassi, Hacienda, and Amwaj as if they’re towns; they’re not. 

Along the coastline, you’ll find a continuous chain of beach resorts/compounds and gated communities. Some are relatively small compounds with just a few hundred chalets, while others are enormous master-planned developments that come with endless facilities like marinas, hotels, shopping districts, beach clubs, even golf courses, and more. 

To make things a bit more interesting, locals sometimes don’t refer to specific compounds when giving directions, especially if they’re not famous enough. Instead, we use “kilos” (kilometers). For instance, we’d say something like “I’m staying at kilo 43”. These kilometer markers are borrowed from the Alexandria-Marsa Matrouh Coastal Road, locally known as “Sahel Road”, which serves as the backbone of the North Coast, Egypt. For years, this kilometer system was one of the easiest ways to identify locations along this vast stretch of coastline, especially the earlier parts. 

Another way to identify locations is by referring to the major region or district to which the compound belongs. Every few dozen kilometers, there’s a major district that serves as a geographical reference point and is also home to a bunch of compounds. 

• Old Sahel: Features smaller and quieter compounds like Sidi Kreir, Diplo 1 and 2, and El Ballah. 
• El Alamein: Home to the famed compound Marina, New Alamein City, and historical World War II sites.
• Sidi Abdelrahman: Home to some of the biggest developments, including Marassi, Hacienda, Amwaj, Telal, Diplo 3, and more. 
• El Dabaa: There are several newly opened developments there, such as D-Bay, SouthMed, and SeaZen. 
• Ras El Hekma: Home to popular compounds like Masyaf, Mountain View, Fouka Bay, and La Vista.
• Sidi Heneish: Known for one of the most pristine and less-developed stretches of the coastline, featuring only a few big developments like Almaza Bay.

The easiest way to think of the North Coast, Egypt, not as one destination, but as a collection of each community spread across an enormous coastline. Once you understand the kilometer marker system and the major districts, navigating Sahel instantly becomes much easier.

How & Where to Book Your Stay

Now that you know how Sahel is divided, it’s much easier to choose where to stay. Browse available hotels on the map below while keeping these different regions in mind.

Hotels in the North Coast, Egypt

If you prefer a hotel’s convenience, there are actually more hotel options than people often think. They’re usually in the pricier parts of Sahel.

Renting a Chalet

This is what most locals often do when traveling to the North Coast, Egypt, for convenience and budgeting purposes. However, this might not be convenient, cost-wise, if you’re traveling alone. If you’re traveling with a group, though, this option might be worth considering. 

So, how do locals find a chalet to rent?

• We book through a known broker. If you make friends with Egyptians on your trip, it might come in handy to ask them for contacts if they have any. 
• Facebook groups all the way. There are lots of Facebook communities for things of that sort, such as “North Coast Buy & Rental Group” or “Whatsup For Sale Or Rent In Marina, Marassi, Hacienda, Amwaj North Coast”.
• Some properties are up for rent on platforms like Booking.com.

Transportation in the North Coast, Egypt 

Option #1: Car

The problem with Sahel is that it’s very difficult to get around without a car. So, your best options are either that you’re lucky enough to have an Egyptian friend to carpool with or that you rent your own car. 

For car rentals, I found the most affordable and competitive prices to be on Booking.com and Trip.com. They’re also the most trusted platforms out there, allowing you to rent cars from reputable companies like Avis, Sixt, and Hertz. Various cars are available for rent from Cairo International Airport via both platforms, and a 4-day rental can cost you around USD 100, depending on the model, of course. 

Aside from the cost of the rental itself, there are a few other expenses you need to consider:

• Gas (Prices have been fluctuating over the past few years, so make sure you check the current rate online before booking your trip).
• Tolls (That’s an insignificant amount–less than a dollar in total).
• Insurance/security deposit.
• Local taxes and VAT.
• Cost of extra mileage. Each deal offers different limited mileage, so it varies. 

PRO TIP: Rent your car through Booking.com, as I found that they offer limited mileage for up to 600-700 KM (373-435 miles). If you exceed that limit, you’ll pay USD 0.25 for every extra kilometer. So, if you’re traveling with the car, it’s best to rent one with the highest possible mileage offered.

There are also a few things you’ll need to provide to be able to rent a car in Egypt:

• Passport
• Driver’s license (to be provided by anyone who’ll be driving).
• Credit card in the main driver’s name to hold the security deposit.

Option #2: Take a bus there and use ride-hailing apps to get around

The alternative is to travel to the North Coast, Egypt, via bus; premium bus companies like Blue Bus and GoBus offer rides from Cairo to different stations across the coastline. 

As for getting around within Sahel, ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem do operate there in the peak summer season. However, it’s important to bear in mind that the number of cars available will not be the same as in Cairo, especially late at night. You might not even find a ride if you decide to stay up late partying, so it’s risky. Also, Sahel is much bigger than what first-time visitors normally expect. Some compounds are minutes away from one another, while others can be hours apart. That’s why depending on ride-hailing apps will limit you, especially if you want to explore the whole thing. 

Personally, I’d go for a car all the way. Sure, it feels like it comes with a lot of expenses, but if you manage to split the cost with other solo travelers you meet on your trip, or you’re traveling with others, it’ll be a win because convenience is highly crucial for a trip like this. 

Option #3: Fly there and use ride-hailing apps to get around

Another way to get to Sahel is to fly to Al Alamein International Airport or Alexandria Borg El Arab Airport. Fly in directly from your homeland to Sahel, and once you arrive, either rent a car (only if you’re flying to Borg El Arab) or use ride-hailing apps like in the previous option. 

Don’t Skip This Before Your Trip

After you book your accommodation and transport, there’s one final thing you need to sort out before your trip: get insured!

Before every international trip, travel insurance is the one final essential I need to tick off my checklist, and so do you in this case. You see, Sahel is a little different from a typical city break. As you know by now, it’s quite spread out, and the nearest major city with broader services is Alexandria. It’s the kind of destination where unexpected costs can be inconvenient and can add up quickly.

That’s why, as a foreigner, I highly recommend you don’t skip getting travel insurance, not just in Sahel, but throughout your entire trip to Egypt.

Things to Do in the North Coast, Egypt

#1 Spend a slow day at the beach 

This one obviously goes without saying: just go to the beach and do beach things. Chill, read a book, throw ball with your friends and/or your furry friend, or unleash your inner child and build sandcastles. One thing I love to do? I like to color; I find it very therapeutic. 

#2 Or spice it up and attempt some water sports

Take beach things to another level, a tad more adventurous one. Popular beaches often feature various water activities like jet skiing, wakeboarding, paddleboarding, parasailing, or banana boat rides. What a lot of people don’t expect to find in Egypt, though, is surfing! Yes, there’s a surfing community in Egypt, and Sahel is their home. #3 Go to a beach club

Going to the beach is one thing, and going to a beach club is another. Going to a beach club in Sahel involves dressing to impress, lounging on chaises-longues, sipping on cocktails, listening to good music, and unleashing your inner social butterfly. Here are some of the locals’ favorite picks:

If water parks are your thing, look no further. Marassi is home to one of the biggest water parks in Egypt. From gigantic hydrofalls to the iconic Plunge ride, expect an adrenaline-fueled day at Marassi Water World. 

#5 Party like there’s no tomorrow 

This is one of the experiences that make Sahel so distinctive. The Sahel nightlife scene is one of the biggest in the country. From cozy beach parties featuring vinyl DJs to local superstars and international artists performing to thousands of party-goers, not to mention the raves that last till the next morning. 

Some of the artists I’ve personally seen perform live in the North Coast, Egypt include &Friends, Solomun, Notre Dame, and more. Other notable mentions include local sensations like Ruby, Ahmed Saad, Marwan Moussa, and Wegz, as well as international artists like JLo, Peggy Gou, Russ, Saint Levant, and NaÏka, to name a few. Now you probably have an idea of what kind of events to expect. 

How to find events in Sahel?

• Follow the venues and big developers on Instagram.
• Follow major party promoters like ByGanz or Venture Lifestyle’s P+US.
• Also, keep an eye on the Instagram account Sahel Nightlife for updates and announcements. 
• Check out ticketing platforms like TicketEgypt and TicketsMarché for events in Sahel.
• Keep an eye on Cairo’s favorite social events on Instagram to see if they’re heading to Sahel. Events like: Daybreak and Grill Setup‘s Bn’B by Grill Setup.

#6 Stay fit

Cairo’s biggest fitness gurus and gyms take off to Sahel in summer as well. Major developers often partner up with gyms, yoga and pilates instructors, and CrossFit coaches to set up shop at their compounds or for one-day sporting events.

#7 Dine out 

Food is an integral part of Egyptian culture; I say that over and over again. So, finding the best food in Sahel is guaranteed, be it Egyptian or endless choices of various international cuisines. I’ll be sharing my recommendations in a dedicated section below. 

#8 Then shop till you drop 

By now, we’ve already established that Cairo’s favorite brands all take off to Sahel in summer, and that also includes its favorite local fashion brands and concept stores. So, if you need a last-minute emergency fit, have a fashion disaster, or are simply craving some dopamine from retail therapy, you’ll find lots of commercial districts to your rescue. On top of my head, there’s Lakeyard in Hacienda Bay, Mporium in Marassi, The Village in Almaza Bay, and Ritsa in Masyaf Ras El Hekma.

P.S. Restaurants are café are available at these commercial districts as well. 

#9 Hit the arcades

You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the arcades; you just have to be young at heart. Marassi houses a massive entertainment center called The Hub that might just be what you’re looking for. Bowling, arcades, you name it. 

#10 And if you miss sightseeing, visit the World War II sites

You might be in Sahel, taking a break from sightseeing, but this is worth taking a break from the beach because it’s probably the last thing you’d expect to see in Egypt. 

Long before El Alamein became one of the hottest summer getaways, it was the site of 2 significant World War II battles: the First and Second Battles of El Alamein, fought back in 1942. 

Today, you can visit the El Alamein Military Museum, which boasts wartime vehicles, weapons, maps, and more artefacts. You can also visit the Commonwealth Cemetery, as well as the German and Italian war memorials. 

Where to Eat in Sahel

There are endless options within all budgets: fast food, mixed grills, and seafood restaurants, fancy schmancy dining experiences, you name it. Restaurants aren’t just inside compounds; you can find plenty on the Alexandria-Marsa Matrouh Road as well. A lot of Cairo and Alexandria’s F&B giants often set up shop in Sahel during the summer, and since you’re probably not familiar with their names, let me share some of my personal favorite places to eat and drink.

Is Sahel Solo Travel-Friendly?

Answering this question can be a bit tricky, because the answer can be both yes and no. 

You see, Sahel isn’t naturally for solo travelers. It’s built for groups: families, friends, and big social groups. Most Sahel-goers arrive with pre-existing groups and spend their whole vacation together. Also, access to venues can be a bit complicated, and when you’re traveling solo, you won’t necessarily always have the required network to help you navigate these logistics. Not to mention that accommodation in Sahel can be quite expensive, and staying on a budget often relies on groups splitting the costs.  

On the other hand, the North Coast, Egypt, can be a great solo travel experience. Generally, safety isn’t a concern; crime there is rare, compounds are usually heavily secured, and you’d be surrounded by families and vacationers. You also won’t be hassled like in major tourist destinations like Luxor; no one will try to sell you anything, which can be overwhelming to many travelers. 

Plus, we’ve already established that the beaches in Sahel are incredible. So, if your idea of the perfect solo trip includes riding the waves, reading by the beach, café hopping, and watching beautiful sunsets, then you won’t regret it. And last but not least, you’ll be experiencing a side of Egypt that foreigners rarely get to see. 

So my final verdict is that: yes, you can enjoy Sahel as a solo traveler, just maybe not in the traditional backpacker sense. 

I’d say Sahel is best suited to independent travelers looking for a glimpse into modern Egyptian summer culture, rather than a destination where meeting other travelers comes naturally. 

And frankly speaking, even in heavily sociable settings, if you’re an extrovert, you will absolutely survive. Let’s say you’re traveling solo, you want to experience the nightlife scene, but you’re afraid of going alone. Speaking from personal experience, as an ambivert, I did just fine, and I had a great time. There were times when I was staying at a close friend’s place, and she was working at major concerts, and I had to be left all alone sometimes. I ended up partying with complete strangers, and it was totally fine. One time, my friend came by to check on me, saw me with a couple, and she thought we were already friends. Plot twist: we weren’t; we’d just met. 

If you’re not a social butterfly, don’t be discouraged. It really doesn’t take one to survive. I still managed to mingle and socialize with people at times when I was really down and didn’t feel like socializing at all. Music, specifically, has this magical way of connecting people. I’ve even gone to music festivals abroad alone and survived, so you can too. 

Practical Tips for Foreigners

• Experiencing Sahel can be extremely difficult without a car. So, if you don’t befriend a local, I highly recommend renting a car. 
• If you do rent a car, drive carefully and try to familiarize yourself first during the day. From El Alamein onwards, a newer highway design replaces the old coastal road, with elevated U-turn bridges, two-way exit lanes, and complex merging points that require extra attention if you’re not used to it. 
• At night specifically, extra caution is advised, as you may encounter drivers traveling at high speeds or under the influence.
• Cash is king in Egypt. Beach clubs, stores, and restaurants will most likely offer POS machines for card payments, but you’d still need cash for emergencies, tipping, and toll gates. 
• Don’t expect free access to the beach. Some beaches are public, while others require entry fees, minimum spends, or membership-only access. 
• Distances are longer than they seem on the map. Plan extra time between spots and factor in crazy traffic if you’re hitting a popular club or going to a concert. 

Final Thoughts: Who Is Sahel For?

Now that I’ve broken down everything about the North Coast, Egypt, for you, it’s time to figure out whether or not it’s the destination for you. The answer to this question highly depends on 2 things: your travel interests and whether or not this is your first time in Egypt or if you’re staying in the country for long enough. 

If you’re looking for ancient temples and history, you should go to Luxor, Aswan, and Cairo. If you’re looking for diving and snorkeling, head to the Red Sea. However, if you’ve already seen and done it all and you want to experience how Egyptians spend their summers, there’s nowhere like Sahel. The turquoise Mediterranean waters, beach clubs, sunset dinners by the sea, and afterparties are unrivaled.
