In this detailed review, I’ll be covering everything you need to know in advance about the 3-star eco-lodge: accommodation details, on-site facilities, value for money, and more. I’ll also share my personal experience from my 5-day stay and rate everything as I go.

Abu Dabbab Lodge’s Booking Process

Booking your stay at Abu Dabbab Lodge directly with the hotel can be a little confusing. There are 2 websites: one for the beach and another for the lodge. The latter, unfortunately, isn’t user-friendly and has a lot of bugs. That’s why I recommend booking through a hotel-booking platform. 

I personally booked my stay through Booking.com, as I low-key love the benefits of their Genius Loyalty program. However, you can also find Abu Dabbab Lodge listed on other platforms like Expedia and Trip.com.

Abu Dabbab Lodge’s Location 

What truly sets Abu Dabbab Lodge apart is that it’s located in the Abu Dabbab Bay area, which is around 30 KM south of Marsa Alam International Airport.

Abu Dabbab’s unique ecosystem makes it one of the most stunning marine habitats in the Red Sea. It’s home to vibrant coral gardens, various kinds of tropical fish, and rays, but what it’s mostly known for is its family of sea turtles. Abu Dabbab’s protected waters are home to nesting and resident sea turtles, each with a story and a name. 

Accommodation

Rooms at Abu Dabbab Lodge aren’t overly fancy, but they’re cozy, comfortable, and well equipped with everything you’ll need for a few days by the beach. They have double rooms that can be made available at a single-occupancy rate, making it affordable for solo travelers. 

My room had a garden view, an ensuite bathroom with a shower, an AC, a TV, a mini fridge, and a little coffee/tea corner. There was also a spacious closet with extra pillows, plus a proper vanity area with a decent mirror, which I personally appreciated as a woman who needed space to get ready every day. Not to mention the drying rack outside of every room. 

An extra detail that I also appreciated as a creator was that there were several electric outlets at several corners around the room. This way, I was able to charge my phone, laptop, and GoPro all at once. 

Housekeeping was also great; my room was spotless throughout my entire stay, and I received complimentary bottled water on a daily basis. The staff was also…fun, but more on that later (check the towel art battle section below). Overall, the room was a pretty comfortable place to come back to after spending long, tiring days exploring Marsa Alam. 

Available Facilities

• Free parking is also available on site. So, if you’re renting a car, you won’t have to worry about parking tickets. 
• Access to the famed Abu Dabbab beach to all hotel residents, which is honestly the best thing about Abu Dabbab Lodge and what makes the stay there absolutely worth it. 
• There are several restaurants and bars; the main ones are in the lodge’s lobby, while the rest are on the beach. 

• The beach also has a diving center where you can book excursions or diving sessions, as well as rent diving and snorkeling gear like fins or life jackets. 
• Loungers, showers, and bathrooms can be found on the beach too.
• There’s also a shopping area that you can find on the beach; souvenirs there can be quite expensive, though. 
• An outdoor pool is available and is open all year round.
• Every guest receives a towel card at check-in for beach/pool towels. 

The Atmosphere at Abu Dabbab Lodge

Abu Dabbab Lodge is not an overly fancy resort, but rather a super quiet and comfy place to go back to after a long, energetic day. But despite that, during the day, its beach attracts travelers from neighboring resorts and hotels for its exceptional reefs and marine life, specifically its famed family of sea turtles. 

That said, coupled with the previously mentioned beach amenities, a vibrant atmosphere is guaranteed if you spend your day on Abu Dabbab beach.

Being located within a nationally protected marine area makes Abu Dabbab Lodge extremely committed to preserving this biodiversity. As you walk down the beach, you’ll spot plenty of signage dedicated to eco-awareness. Generally, you’ll sense their eco-friendly efforts, which is something I highly appreciated, in the overall atmosphere of the place.

Value for Money

What I paid for my 5-day stay seemed expensive in comparison to other beach destinations like Dahab, but Marsa Alam is considered a destination on the pricier end anyway. However, in comparison to other highly rated Marsa Alam hotels, Abu Dabbab Lodge falls in the mid-range category. 

Considering top-notch service, prime location, abundance of amenities, and access to one of the best snorkeling spots on the entire coast, the stay at Abu Dabbab Lodge is absolutely worth every penny, in my humble opinion. Food wasn’t the best; there’s no wide variety, but since it’s not a big hotel, it was understandable. Also, even though most dishes were mediocre at best, there were always a few delicious exceptions at every meal. My top favs were the roasted chicken and potato cubes with garlic. 

Overall, I think money was well spent on this stay. 

My Overall Experience at Abu Dabbab Lodge

Like I previously mentioned, my room was lovely and quite comfy, and it was always spotless. I loved that there were lots of amenities on site, specifically the restaurants and bars on the beach. And of course, the beach itself was the best thing about my stay! Also, checking in and out went smoothly; the receptionist was always helpful and friendly. 

Aside from the food, which I’d honestly rate at a 3.5/5, the only negative experience I had was poor WiFi. The hotel supposedly offers free internet connection to all guests, but it wasn’t reliable at all, so I had to depend on my mobile data. That said, it’s not an ideal place for a digital nomad hoping to get lots of work done during their trip unless you have a portable WiFi device or have enough data to utilize a mobile hotspot. 

My Towel Art Battle

The most wholesome part of my experience at Abu Dabbab Lodge was my towel art battle with their housekeeper. Yes, you did read that: towel art battle.

Here’s how it all started!

After a very exhausting first day adventuring, I walked into my hotel room to find a towel art masterpiece that looked like the byproduct of a peacock and a swan having a majestic baby. I know how bizarre this sounds, so I’m dropping some photos for visual aid. The housekeeper also used my watermelon paper fan that I had left on my vanity and some flower petals for decoration. As soon as I saw this, I laughed out loud!

This small gesture made my day, so I thought I’d respond with a masterpiece of my own. After watching a couple of YouTube tutorials, I responded with a towel crab and placed cash between its claws. I thought it would be a fun way to leave a tip, and lowkey hoped he’d get the memo and turn this into a towel art battle.

And guess what? He got the memo! And raised the bar so damn high…

The next day, I came back to a literal crocodile made of towels, almost eating my crab, along with a floral note that reads, “accept battle”.

I knew I couldn’t match his skill level, but I knew if anyone could beat him at creativity, it would be yours truly. At this point, we were technically out of towels, and I didn’t want to compromise the crab and the crocodile because I actually wanted the crab to escape, or at least a depiction of it. 

Anyhow, I carefully lifted the perfect towels to pull out the blanket, and turned it into a blanket whale! I had to make a sea creature bigger than a freakin’ crocodile, but I didn’t stop there. I had the once-mighty crocodile look beat, with its tongue sticking out (AKA this day’s tip) and some rose petals depicting a graphic, bloody scene. And of course, my former crab was escaping. 

The message was: whale wins *mic drop*… How can someone possibly top that?

These were probably his thoughts while carefully considering his next move, because the following day, I walked into the room to find a gigantic towel elephant on the bed, and a note that read: “elephant wins”!

Since there was no way I could’ve possibly created anything bigger than an elephant, and it was my last night, I responded with 3 sea creatures: a jellyfish, a sea turtle, and a stingray. I also left a floral note that read: “You brought an elephant; I brought the ocean”.

The worst part of this whole shenanigan was that I never knew his thoughts on this because I checked out the next morning. 

Anyway, I just thought this small act of kindness probably made this housekeeper’s day just like it did mine. 

Final Verdict

Would I stay at Abu Dabbab Lodge again? Absolutely. Would I recommend it for fellow solo travelers? Definitely! This hotel surely deserves its reputation and popularity among travelers. Even if you decide not to stay there for whatever reason, a day use there at the beach is absolutely worth it.

About Marsa Alam and Its Geography

We’ve already established that attractions, as well as hotels, are scattered along a remote coastline rather than a walkable city center. That’s why choosing the right place to stay is crucial, especially if you’re a solo traveler like me. 

Here’s a complete breakdown of the regions in Marsa Alam where there are accommodation options. There are other zones like Wadi El Gemal, for instance, but since it’s a natural protected area, traditional hotels aren’t available; you can go camping there with a permit, though. 

That said, the following breakdown only covers regions where there are hotels, lodges, and resorts. 

Where to Stay in Marsa Alam As a Solo Traveler

#1 Port Ghalib

What makes Port Ghalib special is that, unlike the rest of Marsa Alam, you’re not locked in your resort. There’s actually a promenade and a marina zone, where you can easily walk to restaurants, cafés, and shops. This is also where you may be hopping on a boat for some excursions, such as the Marsa Mubarak trip where you get to snorkel with turtles and dugongs.

• Vibe/Character: Social, walkable, dining out, and marina strolling.
• Nearby attractions: Port Ghalib Marina and Marsa Mubarak Bay.
• Transportation: In Marsa Alam, it’s best to either rent a car or join a group tour, and the operator will handle your pickup and drop-off.

#2 Abu Dabbab 

This area attracts nature lovers, as well as snorkelers and divers, for its unique ecosystem and vibrant reefs. That’s why it’s home to ecolodges designed with communal spaces and activity-focused facilities like dive centers and yoga decks, making it easier to socialize. Abu Dabbab definitely boasts lots of the best hotels in Marsa Alam.

• Vibe/Character: Best suited for nature-loving travelers and scuba divers.
• Nearby attractions: Abu Dabbab Beach, Elphinstone Reef, and Samadai Reef (Dolphin House).
• Transportation: In Marsa Alam, it’s best to either rent a car or join a group tour, and the operator will handle your pickup and drop-off.
• Best for: Solo travelers, nature lovers, and divers.

This region is heaven on earth for divers and kite surfers, and naturally, it attracts travelers who belong to the adventure community. So, as a solo traveler, it’s impossible to feel isolated at the dive villages and ecolodges in the Deep South. 

• Vibe/Character: Off-grid adventure and hardcore diving.  
• Nearby attractions: Hamata Islands, Wadi El Gemal National Park, and Sataya Reef (Dolphin Reef).
• Transportation: In Marsa Alam, it’s best to either rent a car or join a group tour, and the operator will handle your pickup and drop-off.
• Best for: Adventurous solo travelers, island hopping enthusiasts, and pro divers.

Tips for Deciding Where to Stay in Marsa Alam

1. Decide what you want to do in advance

Depending on the attractions you want to visit and the activities you want to do, your ideal location might differ. For instance, if you’re a first-timer, you might want to explore different locations that are scattered around. On the other hand, if your priority is seclusion and adventure, you might want to stay elsewhere.

2. Opt for a central stay

To save time on the commute between attractions, opt to stay somewhere central. 

This is one of the reasons why I chose to stay in Abu Dabbab and why I personally recommend staying there, especially for first-timers who’d like to experience a bit of everything.

3. Consider the amenities included

Choose a hotel that offers beach access, an on-site diving center for activities, and multiple restaurants or bars. Basically, make sure the hotel offers a social atmosphere.

4. Look at meal options offered by hotels.

Look at options like bed & breakfast, half-board, and full-board, and choose wisely. Personally, I think opting for half-board accommodation is the ideal option. In my experience, you will most likely miss lunch at your hotel on most days; plus, full-day excursions often include lunch. So, by opting for half-board, you won’t be paying for the meal twice. 

Final Thoughts

Marsa Alam can be a pricey destination and a not-so-popular one amongst solo travelers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find a great place to stay. The Red Sea destination is located in the South of Egypt, 260 KM (a little over 160 miles) away from Hurghada. It’s mostly known for its crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral reefs, and stunning marine life. There, you can snorkel with sea turtles, spot wild dugongs, swim alongside spinner dolphins, and more. That’s why snorkeling and diving in Marsa Alam are bucket list-worthy.

After years of sitting on my bucket list, I recently made it happen and solo road-tripped my way there. I spent my days exploring its iconic spots and remote corners and returned even more obsessed with the destination than I already was. 

So, if Marsa Alam sounds like your cup of tea, or if it’s already on your list and you’re planning a trip there, look no further. I put together this extensive guide that covers everything you need to know before you go: where to stay, how to go, what to do, you name it.

Planning Marsa Alam Last Minute? (TLDR)

• Best place to stay: Abu Dabbab Lodge (This is where I personally stayed and loved because I had access to Abu Dabbab Beach, which is home to an entire family of sea turtles).
• Best way to go: Rent a car if you’re a confident driver, or book a domestic flight if you’re tight on time and have the budget for it. 
• Bucket list activities you must book: Swimming with dolphins in Sataya or Samadai, and snorkeling with sea turtles and dugongs in Marsa Mubarak.
• Don’t forget: travel insurance and an Egypt eSIM. 
• Best time to visit: Spring (March-May) and Fall (October-November) are optimal for mild temperatures. However, the weather in both Summer and Winter is still great. 

Where to Stay: Best Hotels in Marsa Alam

Understanding the geography of Marsa Alam is the key to making or breaking your experience there. It’s more spread out than what most travelers think; the town itself is pretty small, and the destinations and attractions are located miles away. So, renting a car or hiring a tour guide with a driver is an absolute must. 

That said, almost all the best hotels in Marsa Alam are located on the main coastal road, not inside the small town. Here are some of my top recommendations:

• Wadi Sabarah Lodge ($$$) (Abu Dabbab)
• Marsa Shagra Village ($$$) (Abu Dabbab)
• Wadi Lahmi Village ($$$) (Abu Ghusun)

Marsa Alam Transportation: Getting Around and How to Get There

There are various ways to get from Cairo to Marsa Alam: you can book a domestic flight, take a bus, or simply drive. It’s a 7- 8-hour ride from Cairo, depending on where exactly you’re moving from and heading to. However, if you’re taking a bus, the ride is expected to take much longer. On the other hand, the flight from Cairo to Marsa Alam is only 1 hour and 20 minutes long. 

Deciding which mode of transportation is best for you depends on your budget and schedule. I personally don’t recommend the bus as it’s such a long, exhausting journey. When I went there, I drove my car, and it honestly came in handy. But it’s worth mentioning that the last section of the route, right after Safaga, gets very confusing because there are 3 different roads. The older coastal roads aren’t even the best in terms of construction, and they’re two-way. So, if you’re not a confident driver, I think booking a flight would be best for you. 

What’s trickier is getting around Marsa Alam and not getting there. The thing is, there are no taxis and no ride-hailing services, so it’s best to rent a car. If you’re not comfortable driving, you’ll need to hire a car with a driver, or book a tour through your hotel or an agency/third-party like Viator or GetYourGuide.

That’s why having my car came in handy during my time there, as I was able to explore certain destinations on my own. However, it’s worth noting that I’m used to driving through dirt roads in natural protectorates and solo road tripping across Egypt. 

Best Things to Do in Marsa Alam

Between desert and beach activities, Marsa Alam is mostly known for the latter. The tranquil Red Sea destination offers world-class diving experiences to its visitors, due to its rich marine life and stunning coral reefs. Snorkeling and diving in Marsa Alam are like no other in the rest of the Red Sea destinations; what the reefs and beaches there have to offer are truly unrivaled. 

Marine Adventures: Snorkeling and Diving in Marsa Alam

#1 Explore untouched reefs

The significantly salty water and its remarkable visibility make snorkeling and scuba diving in the Red Sea a truly exceptional experience. That, along with, of course, the stretches of stunning coral reefs and 1,000+ species of tropical fish. Divers from all over the world come to Egypt for its mind-blowing diving spots across the Red Sea, but Marsa Alam, in particular, holds a special place. It’s hands down the best destination in the entire country to visit for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts.

Here are the top dive sites in Marsa Alam:

• Abu Dabbab Bay: This shallow bay boasts colorful reefs and a variety of tropical fish, as well as rare sightings of dugongs. However, it’s mostly known for being home to sea turtles. This all makes Abu Dabbab the perfect location for snorkeling and intro dives. 
• Umm Halhala (Garden Reef): An offshore coral garden that sits right outside the Abu Dabbab area, accessible via speedboat from the beach. This was hands down one of the most stunning reefs I could see as a beginner. 
• Elphinstone Reef: Being famous for hammerhead and whitetip shark sightings in the fall, as well as vibrant corals that stretch as deep as 100+ meters (328+ feet), makes this a diving paradise. However, it’s more of an advanced divers’ site due to its depth and strong currents. 
• Fury Shoals: An entire reef system down south, boasting a network of over 20 reefs and lagoons, making it another diver’s paradise. 
• Shaab Samadai (Dolphin House): This lagoon is home to a pod of spinner dolphins where you can have magical encounters in a more protected setting. 
• Shaab Sataya (Dolphin Reef): This southern reef is another home to spinner dolphins, but given its open water setting, encounters may be closer and with bigger numbers. There are wonderful coral reefs there worth seeing as well. 

#2 Swim and Snorkel at Sharm El Luli (Ras Hankorab) and Abu Dabbab Beaches

Even though there are marvelous reefs and colorful fish at both beaches, making them lovely snorkeling destinations, the beach experience felt they deserved a point of their own. Aside from snorkeling, you can simply swim and chill at both Sharm El Luli and Abu Dabbab, but they each offer a different kind of experience and vibe. 

#3 Snorkel with sea turtles and dugongs

This is hands down one of the main highlights Marsa Alam has to offer, especially for snorkelers and non-divers. Even if you can’t swim at all, you can still spot these astonishing sea creatures.

Thanks to Marsa Alam’s protected shallow bays, rich in seagrass meadows, which are what both species feed on, it’s home to families of sea turtles and rare dugongs (sea cows).

• Abu Dabbab Beach: Abu Dabbab’s protected waters are home to nesting and resident turtles. That’s why staying in Abu Dabbab Lodge, which gives you free access to the beach, is a great idea. That’s what I personally did, and I do not regret it one bit. The beach also offers vibrant coral reefs, tropical fish, and rare sightings of dugongs if you take a speedboat and go deeper into the sea. 
• Marsa Mubarak: This sheltered bay has a unique ecosystem that makes a home for sea turtles and dugongs, making it one of the best places to spot both. 

#4 Swim with spinner dolphins

Another magical sea creature Marsa Alam is known for is the spinner dolphin. Pods of those beautiful marine mammals can be found in various spots in the Red Sea. The top two destinations where you may see dolphins and swim with them are Shaab Samadai and Shaab Sataya. However, just like turtles and dugongs, dolphins are wild animals, and their sighting is never guaranteed.

As I mentioned before, this lagoon is home to a pod of spinner dolphins where you can have magical encounters in a more protected setting than Sataya. Due to stricter regulations, snorkeling is restricted to designated areas and the dolphins’ resting zone is off-limits. Also, swimmers must wear life jackets regardless of whether or not they can swim.

Shaab Sataya (Dolphin Reef)

On the other hand, Sataya offers an open-water setting, so closer encounters are a possibility, and potentially with larger numbers. However, it’s worth noting that the journey to the southern reef is long and exhausting. 

You’re expected to head out as early as 5:30 AM, depending on your operator and the location of your hotel; I was picked up at 6:00 AM, but we still had to pick up a couple of more people on the way. The first ride took 2 hours till we reached Hamata Port, and from there, we joined a larger group and hopped on a yacht. Then, we sailed for 2 more hours into the open water till we reached Sataya. 

After two snorkeling sessions and lunch on the boat, we sailed back to Hamata Port, but the journey back was even more tiring because the water was too turbulent, so most of us got seasick. The journey back was probably 2 of the worst hours of my life because I was incredibly sick. But aside from the seasickness, long rides, and waking up early, it was all worth it. Because once you get in the water and see those magical creatures swimming by you, you’ll be in awe. It’s absolutely breathtaking!

#5 Marvel at the mangroves in Qulaan 

Qulaan beach is a serene lagoon located in Wadi El Gemal National Park, south of Marsa Alam. The site is famous for the iconic mangrove trees, an ecological marvel that thrives in saltwater. It’s the perfect spot to unwind after a long day, where you can sip on traditional Jabana coffee and chat with the native Ababda tribesmen while enjoying the view. 

FUN FACT: Unlike most nomadic tribes that navigate the desert using the stars, the Ababda tribe actually uses the sun and wind direction to find their way. 

#6 Take a dip in Al Nayzak

Al Nayzak is a unique natural rock pool located just a few miles south of Marsa Alam by the coast. Legend says that a meteorite hit the coast and created this geological marvel; hence the name, Al Nayzak, which actually means “meteorite” in Arabic. Most travelers like to make a quick stop at the hidden pool for a swim and some photos for the ‘Gram. 

#7 Visit Hamata Islands

Dubbed “the Egyptian Maldives”, these pristine, uninhabited virgin islands feel straight out of an old Windows desktop background; millennials in the back, do you hear me?

They’re just a 40-50-minute boat ride from Hamata Port. Once you arrive, you can enjoy the raw, untouched nature by wandering on the white-sand islands and snorkeling at the vibrant reefs nearby. One of the islands you must not miss is Siyal Island. 

Land and Desert Adventures in Marsa Alam

#1 Desert safari in Wadi El Gemal

Those who know me know that I’m a desert gal at heart, and I’d never pass up an opportunity to venture out in the vast Egyptian desert. But to me, Marsa Alam is more of a water-activities destination. However, as a tourist, it’s quite understandable if you feel like taking a break from the turquoise waters for a change of scenery. 

If that’s the case, then you should go on a desert safari in Wadi El Gemal National Park for a taste of Marsa Alam beyond its beaches. The rugged desert landscapes, mountains, and valleys are sure to steal your breath away. It’s such a great place to experience the destination’s landscape and culture differently.

Depending on your tour, you can ride a quad bike, a camel, or an off-road car. Then visit a Bedouin village and enjoy traditional tea as the sun sets over the horizon. Personally, I hate quad bikes; they’re too loud, and I feel like they disrupt the natural environment. But that’s just one woman’s opinion; you’re entitled to disagree if that’s your cup of tea. 

#2 Going for a stroll in Port Ghalib

For a more laid-back experience, you can spend an evening wandering around Port Ghalib. You might recognize it, as it’s also where you’ll go to ride a boat for some of the excursions.  

Aside from boats, the marina is lined with cafés, restaurants, and shops as well. So, it’s a lovely place to grab an afternoon coffee or dinner, and enjoy a different atmosphere after a long day snorkeling. 

How to See Marsa Alam’s Marine Life Responsibly

Honestly, one of the things I love the most about Marsa Alam is that responsible tourism and marine life conservation are taken very seriously there. As I mentioned earlier, getting to some of the region’s most beautiful destinations means driving through dirt roads and protected natural areas, rather than having them paved over and developed for mass tourism. The extra effort it takes to get there is actually part of what keeps these places feeling so untouched. And once you arrive, the strict regulations in place help protect the beaches, reefs, and marine life that make Marsa Alam so special in the first place.

To visit Marsa Alam and explore its stunning treasures, here are a few things to keep in mind to do so as responsibly as possible:

• When snorkeling with wildlife, enter the water calmly if you’re on a speedboat; don’t jump! Avoid making noise or sudden movements, in general, so you don’t scare them away.
• Don’t chase, touch, or feed wild animals like dolphins, sea turtles, or dugongs.
• Always keep a safe distance between you and the animals.
• Avoid blocking dolphins’ swimming direction.
• Don’t snorkel right above sea turtles, especially if you’re with a large group. Sea turtles will often swim up to the surface to breathe, and snorkeling above them can block their way.
• Don’t stand, touch, or damage corals with your fins or diving equipment. Even a small amount of damage, which may seem insignificant to you, can harm an entire fragile ecosystem.
• And of course, leave no trace behind. Don’t litter, and don’t collect seashells; these act as shelter for small sea creatures on the shore. 

Where to Eat: Marsa Alam Food & Drink 

The fact that everything in Marsa Alam is spread out makes saving dining spots impractical, to be honest. One of the best things I’ve done was booking my accommodation with meals because after a long day of exploring and driving around, a ride to Port Ghalib, where most of the nice restaurants are, might either be too far or too exhausting. 

PRO TIP: Don’t make the same mistake I made and book full-board accommodation; book half-board with breakfast and dinner instead. It’s very likely that you’ll miss lunchtime hours at your hotel, plus full-day excursions often include lunch anyway. 

Solo Travel in Marsa Alam

Now, time for the million-dollar question: Is Marsa Alam a solo travel-friendly destination? Well, I wouldn’t say it’s a 100% solo travel destination, but it’s definitely doable on your own. 

The reason why I’m saying it’s not a solo travel destination is that you’ll mostly encounter groups and couples there. As a solo female traveler, I haven’t come across anyone who was traveling by themselves other than me. However, this didn’t affect the quality of my trip whatsoever. 

It’s just important to set the right expectations because it’s not the kind of destination where you’ll instantly connect with fellow solo travelers on the road. But if you’re open enough, you can always chat with the locals and other travelers joining the tours and excursions.

Speaking of tours and excursions, the ability to join existing groups by booking a tour online makes attractions so accessible and more affordable for solo travelers, as the cost is split over the whole group anyway. 

Here are some of my top solo travel tips for Marsa Alam:

• Don’t expect a solo-travel social scene: Like I just mentioned, there aren’t any hostels or backpacker hubs where you’ll naturally meet tons of other solo travelers. So, if meeting people is important to you, join group excursions instead of relying on your accommodation.
• Choose your accommodation wisely: Marsa Alam is very spread out, as I said earlier, and some resorts can be quite isolated. If you’re traveling solo, it’s best if you stay somewhere with restaurants, activities, and easy access to tour operators. This is one of the reasons why I highly recommend staying at Abu Dabbab Lodge. There were several bars and restaurants on the beach, a diving center on-site, along with a bunch of other facilities.
• Arrange your transportation in advance: We’ve already established that Marsa Alam’s attractions are pretty spread out and that commuting can be tricky. So, if you’re not renting a car, figure out how you’ll get between your hotel, the airport, beaches, and excursion meeting points before you arrive. To get to your hotel safely, especially if you’re landing late at night, it’s best if you pay a little extra for an airport transfer. 
• Ask your tour operator whether an excursion requires a minimum number of participants and how it affects its rate: Group excursions are usually more affordable for solo travelers; however, it’s important to consider that some activities or some operators may be priced differently if there’s a minimum number of participants. Always double-check beforehand to avoid any misunderstandings around pricing. 

• Download offline maps: This one goes without saying anywhere, but it’s especially useful if you’re renting a car and visiting remote areas. Mobile coverage can be spotty once you’re away from the main resort areas.
• Carry cash: Sure, you will be able to pay by card at your hotel/resort and at its fancy facilities. However, cash will always come in handy for smaller local businesses or for tips. I paid mostly by card for my entire trip, but there were several occasions where I needed money, like when I had to pay for National Park tickets myself, or when I wanted to tip the housekeeper in my hotel. 
• Let someone know your excursion plans: Always share your itinerary and plans for the day with someone you trust back home. Snorkeling and diving in Marsa Alam usually require signing a waiver as standard procedure; at the end of the day, adventure travel activities always come with risk. It’s a simple precaution, but it’s better to be safe than sorry, especially if you’re heading out somewhere remote. 
• Put sea conditions into consideration: This one feels particularly relevant after my Sataya experience. Even if you’re not prone to seasickness, check the sea conditions before booking an excursion and ask your operator about the expected journey and its conditions. Some of these excursions, like the Sataya trip, involve hours on a boat in open water, and that can be a very different experience from a short snorkeling trip. In that case, even if you haven’t been seasick before, if the water’s turbulent and you’re not used to spending an entire day on a boat, you will most likely get seasick. That’s why it’s important to pack the right medication in your meds pouch before traveling. 

Getaways and Day Trips From Marsa Alam

Being strategic with your itinerary is ideal to make the best of your trip to Egypt, in general. Marsa Alam might be far from Cairo, but it’s close to several must-visit destinations in Upper Egypt (what we call the south). You can either head to Marsa Alam after doing your Luxor and Aswan part of the trip, or vice versa, or maybe you can see them on weekend getaways or day trips from Marsa Alam. It all depends on your travel interests and itinerary. 

El Quseir

The nearest city to Marsa Alam is El Quseir, and if you have the time, I highly recommend you pay it a visit. It’s not just another port town; it’s one of the oldest towns on the Red Sea that’s known for its history and authentic local culture. This is hands down a great place to visit for a more culturally immersive experience away from the major tourist hubs along the coast.

Luxor

Honestly, I personally believe Luxor is one of those Egyptian destinations that deserves a whole part of your trip, especially if it’s your first time in Egypt. I mean, you can’t travel all the way to this ancient land that’s thousands of years old without seeing the infamous temples and tombs, history buff or not.

However, if you’re short on time or if you’re mainly on a dedicated diving trip, it’s still worth visiting on a day trip. It will be a full, potentially tiring day, but I promise you you won’t regret it.

Dendera 

The Temple of Dendera is one of Egypt’s hidden treasures, possibly because it’s located in Qena, a southern Egyptian city that’s not so well-known among foreigners. Dedicated to the goddess Hathor, the temple is one of the best-preserved in the country and one of the most stunning ones, making it absolutely worth the day trip.

Kom Ombo and Edfu

One of the reasons why I love the Luxor and Aswan Nile Cruise, and always recommend it over visiting each city on its own if you have the budget for it, is that you get to see the beautiful temples on the way. Those include the Temples of Edfu and Kom Ombo, the first one dedicated to the god Horus, and the latter dedicated to 2 Gods: Sobek, the crocodile god of fertility, and the falcon-headed Horus, god of the sky.

So, if you’re on a tight budget or have limited time and won’t be able to do the cruise, you can always visit both temples on a day trip from Marsa Alam. 

Final Thoughts

So, is Marsa Alam worth visiting? Absolutely! If you’re anything like me and you’re a sucker for Mother Nature, Marsa Alam is guaranteed to blow your mind away. It’s particularly best for marine-life lovers and snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The only caveat is that it can involve long excursions, early mornings, and a less developed version of the Red Sea. Which, when you really think about it, is part of what sets it apart.

Cape Peninsula Day Trip at a Glance (TLDR)

• Route: Cape Town → Muizenberg → Kalk Bay → Simon’s Town → Boulders Beach → Cape Point → Cape of Good Hope → Chapman’s Peak → Hout Bay → Cape Town
• Duration: Full day
• Distance to drive: ~150–200 km (93–124 miles) loop
• Best way to do it: Rent a car or book a guided tour.
• Start: Around 7:00–8:00 AM
• End: Around 6:00–8:00 PM
• Best for: First-time visitors, road-trip lovers, photographers, and nature lovers.

The Cape Peninsula Route

#1 Start in Cape Town

Recommended arrival/departure time: 7:00–8:00 AM

I highly recommend you head out as early as 7:00 or 8:00 AM to make the most of your day, beat traffic, and try to get to spots before the tourist crowds start showing up. From Cape Town, you’ll head south till you reach your first stop, Muizenberg.

#2 Muizenberg Beach

Time needed: 20–30 minutes (if you’re only stopping for photos) or 1–2 hours (if you’re swimming or surfing). 

Your first scenic stop, Muizenberg Beach, is situated about 30 minutes outside of Cape Town. If you recognize the Instagram-famous colorful beach huts, that’s the one. 

This stop was so much fun that my travel buddies and I came back the following day for a full-day experience. Just bear in mind that the water is SUPER COLD, so you’ll want to rent a wetsuit. I rented one even though I was not surfing on our first day, when we did the Cape Peninsula Route. 

Muizenberg is also famous for its surfing culture thanks to the beach’s mad waves. I had to attempt riding the waves myself, and even though I’m not a surfer or a pro swimmer, this was one of the wildest experiences I’ve had in my life. 

If that interests you, this is one of the best places to take a surfing lesson. You can either eliminate one of the Bays from your itinerary to make more time for it, or go back and dedicate a whole day if you have the time. 

#3 Kalk Bay

Time needed: 30–60 minutes

Beyond the scenic viewpoints, Kalk Bay offers a quick breakfast/coffee stop. It’s home to a charming harbor and cute cafés, allowing you to grab a cup of coffee and wander around independently. 

To be honest, I personally skipped this part of the itinerary as I wanted to spend more time swimming in Muizenberg. I just grabbed breakfast on the go in the morning and made a quick lunch stop on the road later in the day. 

#4 Simon’s Town

Time needed: 30 minutes

Simon’s Town is a historic naval town and a good place to stop before heading toward Boulders Beach, especially if you choose not to stop in Kalk Bay. It offers historic architecture, a waterfront, and a bunch of cafés and restaurants. Just try not to spend too much time here because the next stop is one of the highlights of the Cape Peninsula Route. It definitely was for me. 

#5 Meet the African Penguins at Boulders Beach

Time needed: 1–1.5 hours

To me, this was not just the highlight of the day, but one of the highlights of my entire trip to Cape Town. As penguins are one of my absolute favorite wild animals, meeting them in South Africa was a dream come true. 

But wait… penguins in Africa? Yes, Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town is home to a special and endangered colony of African penguins. The colony is one of just a few in the world, making this site an incredibly popular destination among international tourists. 

How to Visit Boulders Beach Ethically?

You can either see the penguins from the main viewing zone of boardwalks on Foxy Beach, or from Boulders Beach, the nearby sheltered cove where swimming is allowed. At Boulders Beach, penguins are expected to be walking past you or even swimming next to you in the shallow water. 

To visit ethically, make sure you stick to the following:

• Keep a safe distance between you and the penguins (about 3 meters). 
• Do not touch, poke, chase, corner, or feed the penguins. 
• Aim to visit during low tide for maximum beach space. Otherwise, it’s better to stick to the boardwalks. 
• Avoid using drones or invasive selfie sticks when photographing the penguins. 
• Make sure you bring a telephoto lens for your DSLR camera, and turn your flash off. 
• Keep quiet and don’t make any noise. 

#6 Cape Point Nature Reserve

Time needed: 2–3 hours

Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope are two of the most iconic landmarks in the Cape Peninsula Route and in all of South Africa. Both are located on the southwestern tip of the Cape Peninsula, so they’re often confused, but they offer quite different experiences. 

The Cape Point Nature Reserve is home to a network of hiking trails leading to some dramatic views of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The reserve offers routes that are suitable for hikers of all levels, allowing all outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy the scenic viewpoints, its famed lighthouse, and the diverse wildlife, including ostriches, baboons, and various bird species. 

#7 Cape of Good Hope

Time needed: 30–45 minutes

Unlike Cape Point, the sky-high cliff with panoramic views, the Cape of Good Hope is a flatter, more rugged area, best known for its pristine coastline and similar wildlife. 

Both landmarks also hold significant cultural significance for the indigenous people of South Africa. The Cape of Good Hope, specifically, is often associated with local folklore, such as tales of the mythical Flying Dutchman, a ghost ship that was believed to have sailed the seas surrounding the Cape. 

There, you can make a photo stop by the famous sign and snap some shots of the dramatic coastline. 

Cape Point vs. Cape of Good Hope vs. Cape Agulhas

Like I previously mentioned, Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope are different in several ways. People often confuse them because they’re located in the same nature reserve. 

One other misconception that a lot of travelers have is that the Cape of Good Hope is the southernmost point of Africa. That’s incorrect. This title actually belongs to Cape Agulhas, which is about 150 KM further east. This is the true point where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet. On the other hand, the Cape of Good Hope is the “most south-western point of Africa”, and that’s where the confusion comes from; people simply misread it. 

#8 Chapman’s Peak Drive

Time needed: 30–60 minutes

Another highlight of the Cape Peninsula Route is hands down the Chapman’s Peak Drive, which is one of the most scenic rides I’ve ever done. The picturesque coastal road offers lots of viewpoints, so expect to make several photo stops. There is no one specific spot to visit, though; the drive itself is the attraction. 

#9 Hout Bay

Time needed: 30–60 minutes

If you have more time and energy, and want to make one final stop before returning to Cape Town, you can head to Hout Bay. You can watch the sunset from the harbor, and maybe go on an optional boat trip, or have seafood for dinner before heading back. And who knows, maybe you’d spot some seals as I did…

The geography can be quite confusing if you’re looking at individual attractions separately, especially if it’s your first time in Cape Town. That’s why I’ve highlighted each point of interest on the map below so you can easily visualize the Cape Peninsula route.  

How to Plan the Cape Peninsula Day Trip

If you want to do the Cape Peninsula road trip, the 2 most convenient options are either joining a group tour or renting a car and doing it all at your own pace. Let’s break down both options so you can decide which one suits you best. 

Option 1: Rent a Car

Renting a car is your best option if you prioritize flexibility, customizing your own schedule, making spontaneous stops, and moving at your own pace. However, it’s also important to consider a few things like parking, toll and gas expenses, and whether or not you have an international driver’s license. 

P.S. People drive on the left side of the road (steering wheel’s on the right side of the car) in Cape Town. So, you need to mentally prepare for that if it’s the opposite in your home country.

Option 2: Book a Guided Tour

For a solo traveler, renting a car might be a costly option; however, that’s actually the option I went for. But I was only able to do that because I split the costs with a small group of friends I met at my hostel. 

If you’re completely on your own, nervous about navigating, or you simply don’t want to worry about the logistics, then the best thing to do is book a guided tour. This would also be a great way for you to meet people and make friends. 

What to Pack for the Cape Peninsula

• Layers of clothing (preferably windproof because Cape Peninsula weather can change quickly.)
• Sunscreen
• Sunglasses
• Water
• Camera (bring a telephoto lens)

• Light (rain) jacket

Practical Tips for Your Cape Peninsula Day Trip 

• Start your day early.
• Check the weather forecast beforehand and dress accordingly.
• Don’t try to do everything. Be flexible and open to necessary changes.
• Bring both cash and cards.
• Stay vigilant and keep your belongings out of sight.
• Don’t feed or touch the penguins, and always keep a safe distance.

Is the Cape Peninsula Route Worth Doing in One Day?

Yes, absolutely, but you also need to set the right expectations; it’s going to be a long day. The Cape Peninsula route packs so many different experiences into one day, but it’s totally doable without rushing through them all. However, if you have more days in Cape Town, it’s worth considering slowing down and turning any of these stops into separate experiences. 

For instance, as I mentioned earlier, when I went to Muizenberg the first time on the Cape Peninsula road trip, my hostel buddies and I enjoyed it so much that we went back the following day to spend more time there. A couple of them were surfers, and they taught us a few surfing basics, and it ended up being such an adventurous beach day. 

Final Thoughts

I’d have to say, following this itinerary on my birthday makes it one of my most memorable ones to date. From colorful beach huts and riding waves to marveling at African penguins and diverse wildlife, then going on one of the most spectacular drives in South Africa and the whole world. The Cape Peninsula Route is basically a reel of all the highlights in the Cape Town region. So, when in South Africa, you should definitely add this itinerary to your bucket list; you won’t regret it.

I’ve had my fair share of chaotic arrivals after a long flight; arriving late at night, trying to navigate a foreign transport system, or struggling with an internet connection in an attempt to request an Uber. That’s why, in this read, I’ll walk you through your different options for getting to your accommodation from the airport, challenges that we often face as solo travelers, and how to overcome them safely. So, don’t make the same mistake of forgetting that part of trip planning, and read along.

Book Your Airport Transfers Before You Leave Home (TLDR)

• Book your airport transfers via KiwiTaxi, the platform that’s been exclusively specializing in airport transfers for over a decade.
• Or try out Booking.com’s airport transfers, the newest addition to the leading platform’s offerings.

Most Common Airport Transfers

In most destinations, there are 3 common ways to reach your accommodation from the airport:

• Public transport: That’s often the cheapest way to get to your hotel, but it can be quite a hassle as airport shuttles or trains often involve transfers and hauling luggage. Not to mention that not all airports or destinations, like Paris or Faro, have train and metro connections, so it’s not always an option.
• Regular taxis: Cabs are usually available immediately, but they’re such a hassle. Aside from the nagging taxi drivers, in most destinations you’ll have to negotiate the fare and, most likely, end up overpaying. 
• Ride-hailing apps: This option is more convenient than the previous ones in terms of comfort and peace of mind. However, drivers aren’t always nearby, and there’s always the risk of surge pricing and long waits. Not to mention that you need to have an internet connection upon arrival. So downloading an eSIM beforehand is an absolute must.

The Real Problem

Different drawbacks of each airport transfer option aren’t the actual challenge. Everything has its pros and cons, but the real problem is that when you’ve just spent 10 hours on a plane, you have more to worry about. 

You’re exhausted, potentially jetlagged, carrying luggage, and all that you probably care about is getting to your hotel and lying on a comfortable bed. This scenario gets extra stressful when you arrive in a city you don’t know late at night, especially if you’re a solo female traveler like yours truly. At this point, safety becomes your number one priority. That’s why you’ll find yourself prioritizing convenience over saving a few dollars.  

The Solution: How Pre-Booked Airport Transfers Come to the Rescue

That’s where pre-booked airport transfers come into play. Just like you’ll plan every other aspect of your trip in advance, you can also book your airport taxi before you even leave your home.  

By pre-booking airport transfers, your driver will be able to track your flight, wait for your arrival, and they’ll have previous knowledge of your final destination. And the best part is that the fare is fixed beforehand. So, instead of worrying about finding transportation after a long, tiring flight, your vacation will simply begin the moment you set foot out of the terminal.

Sure, it’s pricier than other transportation methods. But personally, this is one of those travel expenses I’m willing to splurge on when I know I’ll be arriving late at night, especially if it’s after a long-haul flight or if I’m arriving at a destination where extra caution is required. 

How to Book Airport Transfers?

Of all companies that offer airport transfers, these are the ones that I trust the most: KiwiTaxi and Booking.com.

Airport Transfers via KiwiTaxi

KiwiTaxi is one of the most trusted platforms for booking airport transfers in the travel industry, in my opinion. When you compare rides from Cairo International Airport to Downtown Cairo on both platforms, the fare is much cheaper on Booking. So, it’s either they’re expanding into this market with more than competitive prices, or because of the company’s size, they’re able to keep their prices low.

How do airport transfers work?

All you have to do is book online, and you’ll receive a confirmation email with your ride details. Upon arrival, your driver will be waiting for you with a nameplate and the designated meeting spot, and they’ll take you to your accommodation. 

Are airport transfers cheaper than taxis?

Unfortunately, airport transfers are not always cheaper than taxis or even ride-hailing services. Depending on the destination, your ride can be quite expensive, but under certain circumstances, it can be worth it for safety purposes. Airport transfers on Booking.com are sometimes cheaper than KiwiTaxi, though. 

Are airport transfers available 24/7?

Yes, you can schedule an airport transfer at any time. This is one of its biggest advantages, as it guarantees a safe ride at late hours. 

Will the driver wait if my flight is late?

An additional fee often applies if extra waiting time is involved. In case of flight delays, the driver usually tracks your flight and adjusts accordingly. Terms and conditions may slightly differ depending on which platform you book through, so make sure you double-check while booking. 

Can I cancel my airport transfer?

Yes, you can cancel your booking free of charge as long as you do so 24 hours before your scheduled pick-up time.

Final Thoughts

The first hour of your trip basically sets the tone for the entirety of it. About Lion’s Head

One of the most iconic mountains in Cape Town is Lion’s Head, which is located in the Table Mountain National Park. You know that pointed mountain in the backdrop of many Cape Town astonishing landscapes? That’s the one. 

Even though Lion’s Head is situated at only 669 meters above sea level, it’s such a rewarding hike. It’s steeper than expected, packed with chains and ladders near the summit, and involves some scrambling. All of this makes the hike a bit challenging, but super rewarding, especially after you take the first look at the mind-blowing 360° ocean views at the summit. When I hiked the mountain, it was a bit cloudy, but it was just as surreal as it is on a clear day. 

Lion’s Head Trail Options

When deciding whether or not hiking Lion’s Head is for you, it’s important to know that there are 2 different routes to choose from: the Chains Route and the Spiral Route. 

• The Chains Route: This is the main route I was telling you about; the one that features scrambling and metal chains and ladders. It’s steeper and includes more exposure to open heights, but it’s more direct and more adventurous. 
• The Spiral Route: In the meantime, there’s another trail that bypasses the obstacles in the other one, but it takes a longer time to hike. This option is a more ideal one for less experienced hikers, more anxious travelers, or those with a fear of heights. However, it’s worth mentioning that I hiked the Chains Route despite my fear of open heights, which made it extra fun and rewarding. But more on that later. 

Is Lion’s Head Worth It?

PRO TIP: If you’re planning your Cape Town itinerary, it’s worth staying nearby so you can reach the trailhead before sunrise (if this is when you’ll be hiking).

Where to Stay in Cape Town for Lion’s Head

Gardens

If hiking in Cape Town is your top priority, then Gardens would be an incredibly convenient place to stay. It’s one of the closest neighborhoods to the main trails of both Lion’s Head and Table Mountain; just minutes away from the trailheads. This way, if you’re planning for a sunrise hike specifically, you don’t have to worry about traffic. 

Where to Stay in Gardens? Here are my top picks:

Camps Bay

On the other hand, if you want to wake up to an oceanfront view of Lion’s Head, then Camps Bay should be your top choice. The postcard-like views are absolutely stunning, but it’s also worth noting that it’s a pricey area to stay in.

Sea Point & Green Point

From a strictly travel perspective, Sea Point and Green Point are 2 of the best neighborhoods to stay in Cape Town, especially for solo travelers like me. I personally stayed in Green Point during my trip. They’re both known for their high safety and for being social hubs for travelers, making them a great starting point for solo exploration.

How to Get to Lion’s Head

Guided tour

If you’re a solo traveler like me, I highly recommend you join a guided group trip. Not just because having a guide that knows the area and being part of a group would be much safer, but also because it’s a great way to make friends. At least that’s what I did.

There are a couple of ways to book a guided Lion’s Head hike. You can book one through your hostel, or book it online through Viator or GetYourGuide; these are the 2 booking platforms I trust the most. 

I personally went with my hostel, Never at Home; my guides were very knowledgeable and friendly. My stay there, overall, was a great and seamless one; it’s safe to say that this one’s Curls en Route-approved. 

Rental car 

If you have an international driver’s license and you’re a confident driver, renting a car in Cape Town will definitely offer you flexibility. I didn’t rent a car myself, but one of the friends I made at the hostel had rented one, and it came in handy, especially when we were staying up late. I also hired a driver with a private car and split the cost with 3 other solo travelers to go on day trips. So, it definitely came in handy throughout the whole trip to have a car. 

Uber

If you’re planning on hiking Lion’s Head on your own, which I honestly don’t really recommend, then you can simply Uber to the start of the trail. 

How to Plan Your Lion’s Head Hike

Now let’s get to the detailed planning. Before setting off, here’s what I’d recommend booking beforehand. 

Booking the hike itself

Prefer not to hike alone? This is definitely the wisest choice. Join a guided hike through Viator or GetYourGuide.

Accommodation

If you’re planning to hike Lion’s Head during sunrise or sunset, and getting there on time is a priority, then I recommend you stay somewhere nearby. Consider areas like Gardens or Camps Bay. 

Transportation

If you’re planning to explore Cape Town beyond Lion’s Head, renting a car offers the most flexibility. Otherwise, Uber is a convenient option.

eSIM

Download an eSIM before arriving so you can navigate, check the weather, and book an Uber after your hike, if needed. My Experience Hiking Lion’s Head

Most people say Table Mountain is the best hike in Cape Town, but I have to disagree. To me, hiking Lion’s Head was far more enjoyable. However, it’s worth noting that I didn’t know better while hiking Table Mountain, as I wasn’t hiking with a guide. I hiked it with a small group of solo travelers I met on my trip, and we took the main trail. Little did we know that it was supposed to be the easiest, as it wasn’t technical at all, but to me, it was incredibly boring. The entire hike felt like climbing spiral stairs, and let’s say it was both strenuous and not stimulating enough for my ADHD brain. 

On the other hand, my Lion’s Head hike was completely different. I booked a guided group hike through my hostel, because it’s safer for a solo traveler to join a group and it’s one of the best ways to meet people. 

I was there in February, so that’s considered summer in Cape Town. However, the weather forecast changed on the same day of the hike, and it was expected to be cloudy with a chance of precipitation. Our guide said that it wasn’t a high chance, so it was still safe to hike as planned, and that really was the case. The only thing that was affected was the visibility at the summit, as it was cloudy, but it was still a breathtaking sight to be above the clouds. 

It’s also worth mentioning that I didn’t go on a sunrise or sunset hike; we just did a morning hike, so the trail wasn’t crowded at all. 

Overcoming my Fear of Open Heights on Lion’s Head

I hiked Lion’s Head just a day before my birthday, so this was such a meaningful experience for me and such a core memory. Especially because I overcame all the challenging parts despite my fear of open heights!

For more context, in case you don’t already know, because I post a lot of hiking content, I’m obsessed with hiking in spite of having a fear of open heights. I only discovered this years ago by coincidence when I went rock climbing for the first time and froze on the mountain. I didn’t know back then because I don’t have a regular fear of heights, and I still don’t; it’s just open heights, so think mountains, roller coasters, etc. 

Unfortunately, it’s not just a phobia; I get physical symptoms. I often feel dizzy, anxious, and sometimes even nauseous. But since my passion for hiking grew more, I kind of developed coping mechanisms along the way, and the more I exposed myself to it. In fact, I learned one of these mechanisms on that very hike on Lion’s Head.

During our ascent, I was talking about it with a girl in my group; I always give people a heads-up before a hike just in case I get an anxiety attack, so they wouldn’t freak out. She gave me advice that might sound so silly at first, but it actually works. She told me to sing whenever I get anxious on the trail, and I’ve been doing it ever since. I have a terrible voice, but at least it entertains me, so it’s like hitting two birds with one stone.

Can beginners hike Lion’s Head?

Lion’s Head is challenging, but still doable. And if you don’t feel confident enough, you can always opt for the easier Spiral Route.

Can you hike it alone?

You absolutely can, but I don’t recommend hiking Lion’s Head solo. Even though it’s secure to an extent, and there’s signage throughout the trail, for safety reasons in case of injury, it’s not advisable. 

How long does it take to climb Lions Head, Cape Town?

Hiking Lion’s Head takes around 90 minutes on average, so the whole trip should take you 3 to 4 hours if you factor in breaks, time spent on the summit, and a slower pace. 

Is the Lion’s Head hike scary? 

It can definitely be intimidating, but as someone with a fear of open heights, it’s the good kind of scary, if that makes any sense.

What should I wear while hiking Lion’s Head?

Layering clothes is always ideal while hiking Lion’s Head; however, the exact layers depend on the season, time of day, and weather conditions. 

What is the best time to go to Lion’s Head?

The best time to hike Lion’s Head is from September to May for ideal weather.

Is it better to hike Lion’s Head or Table Mountain?

The answer to this question is highly subjective; it depends on your availability, fitness level, and goals/interests. Personally, I enjoyed the Lion’s Head hike way more than Table Mountain to the extent that I descended the latter in a cable car. 

It’s worth noting that part of that reasoning was that I made the mistake of choosing the wrong trail. The Platteklip Gorge route was basically a never-ending stone staircase, which was both strenuous and boring to me. I would’ve enjoyed other routes far more, but it’s important to note that they’re a lot more technical, and therefore, much harder.

Final Thoughts

If you’re ever in Cape Town and craving a little adventure, hiking Lion’s Head should definitely be on your bucket list, especially if you want to challenge yourself a bit. Just go with the right expectations, and you should be okay, and I guess this guide was extensive enough to at the very least set the right expectations for you.

Experiences in Egypt to Add to Your Bucket List

1. Visiting the Great Pyramids of Giza

This one might feel like stating the obvious, but as someone who was born and raised here, I can assure you that the pyramids are worth all the hype. Driving on the Ring Road and casually passing by that majestic site every now and then is something I sometimes struggle to comprehend and try not to take for granted. 

That doesn’t mean that seeing them from afar is enough, though. I highly recommend you wake up bright and early to avoid the crowds and take in all the history right at the Giza Plateau. It’s worth noting that since this is one of the most touristy sites in the world, and not just in Egypt, it could be a bit overwhelming. That’s why it’s best if you hire a tour guide or go with a local friend if you have one.

2. Giving the other pyramids the same attention

A lot of travelers think that the Great Pyramids of Giza are the only pyramids in Egypt. Well, that’s not the case. Archaeologists have identified over 100 pyramids; some of which are significantly smaller in size and others are no longer there. However, Khufu, Khafre, and Menkaure, and their subsidiary queens’ pyramids, are not the only ones of significance. 

For off-the-beaten-path choices, I highly recommend you add Saqqara and Dahshur to your Cairo itinerary. Saqqara is where the oldest known monumental stone structure in Egypt stands, the Step Pyramid of Djoser. As for Dahshur, it’s where you’ll find the Red Pyramid and the Bent Pyramid, among others.

3. Sailing down the Nile

The Nile River is considered Egypt’s heartbeat, life, and soul. You can experience it by either taking a short felucca ride in the city or by boarding a multi-day Nile cruise from Luxor to Aswan or vice versa. 

I’ve taken countless felucca rides throughout my life, but I still remember my very first time going on a Nile cruise as a child. The themed nights were cheesy but cute; my family and I made a lot of friends, but waking up to the view every morning was the biggest highlight. 

FUN FACT: In Egypt, there’s a saying about how drinking from the Nile always brings you back. While drinking straight up from the Nile is generally unsafe, you can safely do so only in Aswan right after the dam, as it purifies the water. I’m living proof of that. 

4. Hot air ballooning in Luxor

This is not just one of my favorite experiences in Egypt; it’s hands down one of my most unforgettable memories. When I did this on my 29th birthday, I thought it was a once-in-a-lifetime thing, but I was wrong. I would absolutely do this over and over again. Floating over the lush green fields and ancient temples of Luxor at sunrise felt euphoric, despite my fear of open heights. So, if height or safety are your concerns, trust me; there’s nothing to worry about, and you’ll forget all the fear once you’re up there.

5. Going all the way to Abu Simbel

Believe it or not, I only went to Abu Simbel after 29 years of living in Egypt, even though I’ve been to Aswan multiple times. But Abu Simbel is further down south, so it often felt like going the extra mile, as it was a day trip from Aswan that required waking up before dawn. But one February, since I was already there, I decided it was time to finally visit one of the most praised ancient temples in the country. 

My advice? Don’t wait as long as I did and cross this off your itinerary, as it’ll be one of your most unforgettable experiences in Egypt.

6. Diving in the Red Sea

Egypt’s Red Sea is known for its wonderful coral reefs and incredible marine biodiversity. That’s why diving or snorkeling is one of the experiences in Egypt you just can’t miss. I still remember how astonished I was the first time I saw all sorts of vibrantly colored fish; that’s a core memory for sure. 

If you’re looking for the best destination to go to your first intro class, or get PADI-licensed, Dahab is one of the most affordable places to do so. On the other hand, if you’re a pro diver, Marsa Alam is known for being a world-class diving hub, as it’s home to an abundance of spectacular reefs as well as wild dugongs, sea turtles, and dolphins.

7. Camping in the Black and White Deserts

Another unconventional birthday trip of mine was to the Black and White Deserts. For some reason, whenever I wanted to go, it didn’t happen. So, I planned a full camping trip for me and my friends on my 27th birthday. 

The Black Desert, which is a result of ancient volcanic activity in the area, is located in the Bahariya Oasis. On the other hand, the White Desert’s distinctive nature is because the entire area used to be covered with water millions of years ago. The desert’s iconic rock formations, composed of either calcium, quartz, or limestone, were the result when the ocean retreated. I’m someone who really appreciates the great outdoors, so celebrating in a destination with such a unique landscape and otherworldly terrain was such a magical experience.

The cherry on top for me was that we went the extra mile to make this trip extra special; almost 100 miles to be more specific. That was how far we drove to reach the iconic Djara Cave, where I literally blew out my birthday candles. 

Djara Cave is a dripstone cave in the heart of the Western Desert on the Wahat road connecting Farafra Oasis to Assiut governorate. The cave dates back to around 55 million years ago and is a result of rain corrosion into the limestone. It also contains animal engravings dating back to the Neolithic period.

8. Hiking in Saint Catherine

Home of the Jebeliya tribe and Egypt’s tallest mountains, Saint Catherine is where I fell in love with hiking, despite my fear of open heights. My first-ever hike was the infamous Mount Sinai, where Moses is believed to have received the 10 commandments. The journey to the summit, paved with breathtaking scenery, was both adventurous and spiritual at the same time.

Saint Catherine is where you can enjoy unforgettable, if not the best, hiking trails and experiences in Egypt, if you’re an outdoor enthusiast like me. After Mount Sinai, I kept going back for more adventures and views, and I have to say, Saint Catherine never ceased to amaze me.

9. Floating in the salt lakes of Siwa

Believe it or not, the first time I got inside one of these salt lakes, I didn’t even know how to swim. I was dead scared because I was water-phobic at the time (I’m currently working on it), and the lakes were incredibly deep. But you’ll float no matter what; the super high salinity in the water does that, just like in the Dead Sea in Jordan. 

Then when you add the Instagrammable turquoise waters, nestled between crystal-shiny salt mines, you’ll get it. That’s what truly makes floating in the salt lakes one of the most magical experiences in Egypt. It’s what makes the long ride to Siwa worth every second.

Final Thoughts

Reliving these memorable experiences in Egypt through telling you about them made me think about how lucky I am to be surrounded by so much beauty and magic. Living in Egypt can be taken for granted far more often than it should be, but I’d like to take a moment to acknowledge how much I’m grateful for each one of these experiences. And I truly hope you get to live them yourself as you turn your dream trip to Egypt into a reality.

After traveling to El Gouna numerous times for both work and leisure, I’ve stayed in parts of town, tried and tested several hotels, and visited my friends at many more. So, in this guide, I’ll first walk you through the best areas I think you should look at first when booking accommodation, before sharing with you my favorite hotels in town. 

If you’re planning a trip to Egypt’s Red Sea and want to explore a gem that isn’t as touristy as Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh, I highly recommend El Gouna. As an Egyptian, this is one of my favorite beach towns in the country for its endless activities, turquoise lagoons, vibrant nightlife, and top-notch restaurants. And as a solo female traveler, I can vouch that it’s one of the safest destinations in Egypt and the entire world.

About El Gouna

Located only 25 kilometers away from Hurghada, El Gouna is a privately-owned town developed by Orascom Development Holding in the late 80s. In my opinion, it’s a gem you can’t miss if you’re planning a trip to Egypt’s Red Sea coast. Personally, I prefer it over tourist-heavy beach towns like its neighboring Hurghada or Sharm El Sheikh.

As an Egyptian traveler, this is one of my favorite beach towns in the country thanks to its endless activities, turquoise lagoons, vibrant nightlife, and top-notch restaurants. And as a solo female traveler, I can vouch that it’s one of the safest destinations I’ve ever traveled to; totally not biased, I promise. 

To start off by setting the right expectations, it’s worth mentioning that the town is considered a luxury destination, so hotels in El Gouna can be pricier end of travel. However, you’ll still find lots of options suitable for different budgets, ranging from apartment-style stays to luxury resorts.

Where to Stay: Understanding Areas (Best Hotels in El Gouna Included)

Unlike other neighborhood guides like the Cairo or Paris ones, this one’s a bit challenging, as El Gouna isn’t divided into neighborhoods the way a bigger city is. Sure, there are neighborhoods like Nuba or Siba El Gouna, but these are residential areas where travelers don’t really stay. Many visitors refer to other areas in terms of marinas, beaches, or resort districts. So, I’ll be framing places to stay as “areas” rather than “neighborhoods”.

That said, hotels in El Gouna are scattered across town. So, in this section, I’ll be focusing on the top areas I think you should be looking at first as a first-time visitor. After years of traveling to El Gouna for both work and leisure, these areas offer the best balance of location, accessibility, dining options, and, of course, accommodation choices.

1. Downtown

As the name suggests, this is the heart and center of El Gouna. This is hands down the most convenient area to stay. I personally love staying there as there are supermarkets, restaurants, banks, and everyday essentials within walking distance. Not to mention that there are not one, but two tuk-tuk stops there, so getting to other areas isn’t a hassle at all. So, if you want to be close to everything without worrying about commuting, this is definitely the place for you. 

• Vibe/Character: Central, lively, and walkable.  
• Nearby attractions: The Clubhouse, El Gouna Go Karts, El Gouna Padel, G-Space, and El Gouna Library.
• Transportation: Tuk-tuks are always available. 
• Best for: Solo travelers, first-time visitors, digital nomads, and anyone who wants to stay somewhere central. 
• Best hotels in El Gouna: Cook’s Club El Gouna and Sultan Bey. 
• Solo travel score: 10/10

2. Abu Tig Marina  

If you’re looking for postcard-worthy views and a lively atmosphere, Abu Tig Marina is hard to beat. This is the hot spot and one of the most vibrant areas in El Gouna, especially at night. Restaurants, bars, and of course, yachts all lining the lavish marina. 

P.S. To be honest, though, this area is too loud for me, so if you need a good night’s sleep like me, it might not be for you. 

• Vibe/Character: Upscale, lively, and social. 
• Nearby attractions: Abu Tig Marina Promenade, yacht harbor, restaurants, bars, shops, Moods Beach, and the New Marina. 
• Transportation: Tuk-tuks are always available.
• Best for: Foodies, young travelers, and nightlife enthusiasts. 
• Best hotels in El Gouna: Turtle’s Inn, Captain’s Inn, Ali Pasha, and Three Corners Ocean View. 
• Solo travel score: 9/10

3. Beachfront (Mangroovy Area) 

If your ideal vacation revolves around beach days, you might want to consider staying in a beachfront hotel, specifically in the Mangroovy Area, as it’s close to many attractions, as well as access to sandy beaches and beach clubs. 

What’s tricky about finding accommodation there is that there aren’t many hotel options, especially ones within a lower budget. You’ll have to find a studio or apartment through Mangroovy Residence or Lemon Spaces serviced apartments, or if you’re a luxury traveler, you can stay at one of the nearby upscale hotels. 

• Vibe/Character: Luxurious, beach-focused, and laid-back. 
• Nearby attractions: Mangroovy Beach, The Smokery Beach, KBC El Gouna Kiteschule, and Fanadir Marina. 
• Transportation: You can request a tuk-tuk through your hotel, or a ride-hailing app like Uber or Careem. 
• Best for: Beach lovers and luxury travelers. 
• Best hotels in El Gouna: DoubleTree by Hilton Mangroovy and Casa Cook El Gouna. 
• Solo travel score: 7/10

4. Mansions Area

As a frequent-goer, this is one of the residential areas I like to stay in as it’s easy to find affordable apartment-style accommodations there. It might seem a bit secluded at first, but it’s actually a short drive to the center. I wouldn’t recommend it if you don’t have a car, though. However, if you’re renting a car or if you don’t mind waiting for an Uber tuk-tuk to arrive, the affordability of the accommodations there is definitely worth it. You can find plenty of apartments and studios in G-Cribs, Scarab, or any of the nearby residential compounds on Booking.com to compare. 

• Vibe/Character: Quiet, residential, and budget-friendly.  
• Nearby attractions: El Gouna Festival Plaza, El Gouna Padel, and El Gouna Go Karts.
• Transportation: Best with a car. Even though tuk-tuks’ availability makes getting around super easy, having a car in El Gouna would be a huge blessing, especially if you’re planning on traveling to Hurghada, Soma Bay, or Sahl Hasheesh. Compare car rentals on Expedia, as it offers plenty of options in the area.
• Best for: Budget travelers, digital nomads, travelers who prioritize value over location. 
• Best stays in El Gouna: G-Cribs and Scarab. 
• Solo travel score: 8/10

Best Hotels in El Gouna for Solo Travelers

Although the areas mentioned above are where I’d recommend first-time visitors begin their search, like I previously highlighted, hotels in El Gouna are scattered throughout the town. Some of my favorite hotels in El Gouna didn’t even make it in the previous section. That’s why the following roundup will be more hotel-centered rather than area-focused. 

Given that El Gouna is an upscale destination, it wouldn’t make sense to categorize accommodations according to their budget. Instead, I’ll be categorizing them based on the level of luxury. 

Kindly note that I’ve either stayed at, visited, had friends stay there, or extensively researched the following hotels. There are far more hotels in El Gouna; the following are just my personal favorites and those I think are worth staying at as a solo traveler.  

3-Star Hotels in El Gouna

• Turtle’s Inn – The most budget-friendly hotel in El Gouna, in the heart of the Abu Tig Marina.
• Captain’s Inn – One of the best-value hotels in the marina, perfect for those who want to stay in the heart of the action.

4-Star Hotels in El Gouna

• Ali Pasha – A charming boutique hotel overlooking the Abu Tig Marina, with excellent walkability and dining options.
• Sultan Bey – Great for travelers who appreciate lagoon views and direct beach access at Zeitouna Beach via shuttle boat. 
• Cook’s Club – An adults-only hotel, perfect for younger solo travelers who enjoy a social setting, boho-chic interiors, and poolside parties. 
• Three Corners Ocean View – An adults-only seaside resort, offering proximity to the marina while maintaining a quieter atmosphere. 

P.S. Don’t stay at the other Three Corners hotel, named Rihana – I’ve personally had a terrible experience with their staff while visiting a friend.

5-Star Hotels in El Gouna 

• Steigenberger Golf Resort – A luxury resort, on the more affordable end, overlooking the lagoons and golf course. 
• Movenpick Resort and Spa – One of the biggest beachfront resorts in El Gouna, with multiple pools and facilities.

Luxury Getaways in El Gouna

• Casa Cook – An adults-only boutique hotel known for its pretty minimalist aesthetics and tranquility. 
• The Chedi – One of El Gouna’s newest luxury resorts. 
• La Maison Bleue – One of the prettiest boutique hotels in the entire country. The luxury mansion is an ideal romantic getaway, but might be worth a night for travelers who are keen on getting Instagrammable shots. 

Accommodation Tips for Solo Female Travelers

• Read the most recent reviews, preferably those within the last 6 months.
• Prioritize properties with 24-hour reception.
• Arrange airport transfers if you’re arriving late at night.
• Share accommodation details with someone back home.
• Save your accommodation details on Google Maps and write them down on a piece of paper in case something happens to your phone. 
• Prioritize comfort and convenience over price. 

P.S. El Gouna is generally one of the safest destinations in Egypt, and as a solo female traveler myself, I can definitely confirm that. 

Tips for Deciding Where to Stay in El Gouna

1. Factor in proximity to amenities and available modes of transportation

Everyone would love to stay somewhere close to as many amenities and attractions as possible, but how central do you need your accommodation to be? Consider whether you prefer restaurants and amenities within walking distance or a short tuk-tuk ride. Also think about whether you prefer to stay somewhere where there’s an abundance of tuk-tuks, or waiting for one is not an issue for you. Do you even need a tuk-tuk, or will you be having a car or bicycle? These are all important questions to ask yourself before booking a hotel in El Gouna.

2. Ask yourself whether you prioritize budget or convenience 

Since solo travel is automatically more expensive, most of us try to stick to a certain budget by default. But since El Gouna is an upscale destination, it’s not budget-friendly anyway. In this case, some travelers would choose to save up as much as they can, which essentially means saving up on accommodation. On the other hand, other travelers will not care about the higher cost of accommodation since the whole trip is a splurge anyway. 

3. Consider the duration of your stay

The length of your trip will automatically impact your budget. If you’re staying for a few days, you might prefer the convenience of a hotel; however, if you’re staying for a month, you might prefer the comfort and affordability of renting a studio.

4. Think about your preferred pace and environment

El Gouna can be very lively and super relaxed at the same time. Whether you prefer both or one thing during the day doesn’t necessarily mean you would at bedtime. For instance, you might enjoy staying up late for drinks and live music at the Abu Tig Marina, but if you’re staying at the hotel upstairs, you might not get the good night’s sleep you need. So, if this is a priority for you, I highly recommend staying away from hotels in busy areas like the marina. 

Final Thoughts

One of the things I love the most about El Gouna is that it’s easy to get around, even if you don’t have a car. Tuk-tuks are widely available, affordable, and most areas are only a short ride away from one another. So, don’t feel any pressure to pick the ‘perfect location’; the majority of the hotels in El Gouna are top-notch anyway. 

What I would stress, though, is that if you find a hotel you love, try to book it sooner rather than later. El Gouna is one of the most popular beach destinations for Egyptians, with year-round events and favorable weather. That means: the best rooms sell out fast.
