In the wake of the Coronavirus situation, many people are canceling their dream trips, whether out of caution or borders being closed; let alone those unlucky ones stuck in quarantine. So, in hopes of flattening the pandemic curve, social distancing is being advised at the moment. It doesn’t have to be so boring though; you could still boost your wanderlust by watching the list of travel films below.
Wild
This 2014 film, starring Reese Witherspoon, is actually based on Cheryl Strayed’s memoir, documenting her journey of self-discovery along the Pacific Crest Trail. This film is emotional and could be super relatable to many; if you’re into hiking, in particular, I highly recommend it.
Into the Wild
Also based on a true story, Into the Wild follows the story of Christopher McCandless, a young man who embarks on a hiking adventure across North America. This one’s definitely one of my favorites.
Available on Netflix.
127 Hours
This one’s probably James Franco’s best performance, I’d have to say. The film follows the story of a mountain climber and a hiker who ends up being stuck in a canyon for 127 hours, obviously. Also based on a true story, so if that teaches you anything, the first lesson is to always tell others where you’re heading *wink*
Eat Pray Love
It’s a classic, how can I not mention this one? Based on another memoir, the movie, starring Julia Roberts, follows Elizabeth’s adventure of self-discovery which takes her to Italy, India, and Bali.
Available on Netflix.
Before Trilogy
Those who know me well know that I’m not slightly romantic, but this trilogy just gets to me somehow. I wouldn’t be exaggerating if I say that, the first part, in particular, is one of my favorite movies of all time! So, Before Sunrise (the first movie) follows the story of two travelers who meet on a train in Europe and decide to spend their remaining hours together in Vienna. Before Sunset and Before Midnight tell the rest of the story years later. If you’ve ever met the one on the road, then this trilogy is definitely for you.
The Bucket List
With only six months left to live, Carter and Edward, played by Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, make a bucket list of all the things they wish to do before they die. And sure as hell they start checking them off.
Available on Netflix.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Watch Ben Stiller escape monotony and routine by embarking on an epic, action-packed adventure. This one will definitely take you places!
The Hangover
This comedy was probably never perceived as a travel movie, but you’re wrong. Like come on, have you ever been on a road trip with a crazy group of friends where everything just went wrong and you still had fun? And the best thing is that there’s part 2 and 3!
Available on Netflix.
Expedition Happiness
This one’s not a feature, but a documentary film. It follows a German couple and their dog as they go on a road trip across North America in an old school bus they’d turned into an RV. You surely won’t regret watching this one!
Available on Netflix.
